The theme for Fall 2021 is yet to be confirmed…but watch this space!
Recognised as the longest running national literacy initiative in the USA, running since 1919, there is absolutely TONNES of stuff to get involved with and encourage children to read and love books.
The event is SO popular that the organizers run 2 different weeks of celebration and activity:
May 4-10, 2020 and November 9-15, 2020!
Events take place in schools, libraries, bookstores and within your own home should you choose!
The week long awareness campaign has a fascinating history. Initially set up by the librarian of the Boy Scouts of America, who in turn recruited Frederic G. Melcher, the visionary editor of Publishers Weekly who believed that “a great nation is a reading nation,” and Anne Carroll Moore, the Superintendent of Children’s Works at the New York Public Library and a major figure in the library world. Form then on, Children’s Book Week grew and was supported and backed by more and more organizations with the Children’s Book Council leading the way since 1944.
We know that not all children enjoy reading, but this is a superb opportunity to encourage those less interested as well as providing those who love reading to read a little bit more and share their love!
