Celebrated on the third Sunday of June, Fathers Day 2019 will fall on June 16th.
Father’s Day is a celebration honouring fathers, celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society.
A long standing celebration, Fathers day is celebrated globally, although some countries celebrate on alternative dates.
Within the USA, there are two versions of how the day came about at all. One version of events is that a lady, whilst listening to a sermon about Mothers day in 1910, realized that many of the characteristics that were celebrated in relation to mothers, could also be attributed to fathers. Her father had been a huge inspiration in her life, raising 6 children alone following the death of his wife in childbirth. The lady, Sonora Smart Dodd, initially suggested the 5th June as a day of celebration of fathers which would have been the anniversary of his death, however Sunday the 7th was planned instead.
The second story relates to 1908 when a suggestion from a member of a church congregation at the local Methodist Church in Virginia that the men and fathers of the community should be celebrated following a devastating explosion at a mine where sadly 361 men lost their lives.
Although the day of celebration and thanks spread quickly and widely through communities, it wasn’t until 1972, during the Nixon administration, that Father’s Day was officially recognized as a national holiday.
So if you are fortunate enough to have a father figure in your life, take this opportunity to tell him just how much he means to you. If you have sadly lost an inspirational father, then remember him and honour the memories you made together. A difficult day for some, but be sure to celebrate the good dads so many of us have or have had.
