Global MND Awareness Day is an international observance dedicated to raising awareness about motor neurone disease (MND), also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in some regions. Held annually on June 21st, the day brings together individuals, advocacy groups, healthcare professionals, and researchers in solidarity with those living with the condition. It aims to promote understanding, support fundraising for research, and highlight the urgent need for better care and treatments.

What is Global MND Awareness Day?

Global MND Awareness Day was established by the International Alliance of ALS/MND Associations to raise the profile of motor neurone disease around the world. MND is a progressive neurological condition that affects the nerves (motor neurons) in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness, mobility loss, and difficulty with speech, swallowing, and breathing.

Despite being a rare condition, MND has a profound impact on the lives of patients and their families. There is currently no cure, but early diagnosis, multidisciplinary care, and advances in research can significantly improve quality of life and outcomes. The day helps increase public understanding, combat stigma, and call attention to the urgent need for more research funding and policy support.

When is Global MND Awareness Day?

Global MND Awareness Day is observed annually on June 21st. In 2025, the awareness day will take place on Saturday, June 21st.

The date was chosen to represent a time of year when one hemisphere experiences the longest day and the other the shortest—symbolising the global nature of the MND community and the hope that increased awareness can bring light to those living with the disease.

How to Take Part in Global MND Awareness Day

People across the world are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities to show support and drive awareness:

  • Wear blue: Blue is the international colour of MND awareness—wearing it can help spark conversations and show solidarity.
  • Light up a landmark: Many cities illuminate iconic buildings in blue or orange to mark the occasion and raise visibility.
  • Share your story: Individuals affected by MND are encouraged to speak out, share experiences, or participate in online campaigns.
  • Fundraise for research: Host a charity walk, bake sale, or virtual event to support local or international MND research organizations.
  • Engage on social media: Use official hashtags, post educational content, and join awareness challenges to spread the message globally.

Organizations and healthcare providers may also host webinars, press releases, and awareness campaigns to educate communities and policymakers.

Why Global MND Awareness Day Matters

Motor neurone disease is often misunderstood, underdiagnosed, and underfunded. Global MND Awareness Day provides a platform to confront these challenges head-on, advocate for improved care, and highlight the experiences of those affected.

It also drives home the need for greater investment in scientific research, support for caregivers, and international collaboration. By raising awareness, we not only honor those who have been lost to MND but also work toward a future where the disease is better understood, more treatable, and ultimately curable.
