Heritage Open Days 2019

Established in the early 1994, the Heritage Open Days is an England’s way of contributing to the European Heritage Days by celebrating the regions culture and much more through the festival.

Roots

The Council of Europe and European Commission set up the Europe Heritage Days in 1991 to raise awareness and appreciation of the rich and diverse Europe’s cultural assets as well as the need for care and protection for posterity.
The central principle behind the days was simple and compelling. They would throw open all the doors to historic buildings and monuments especially those that are normally closed to the public. Currently, they are held in September in almost 50 signatory states to the original European Cultural Convention.

Heritage Open Days is England’s largest festival of history and culture, bringing together over 2,000 organisations, 5,000 events and 40,000 volunteers. Every year in September, places across the country throw open their doors to celebrate their heritage, community and history. It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – and it’s all FREE.
