International Dance Day 2020

UNESCO has a habit of reserving 24 hours for everything in the field of performing arts, so it’s perhaps no surprise that there’s an annual International Dance Day. It has been earmarked as a celebration for anyone who attaches value and importance to dance, and acts as a wake-up-call for governments, politicians and institutions which have not yet recognised its value.

While this sounds just a little bit overboard, you’d be surprised at how many places frown upon or outright ban the act of dancing. Even in the US, strict Southern Baptists don’t dance, and this led to the famous hard work of Chicago teen Ren McCormack, who proved them wrong and overcame the community through the medium of dance in the hard-hitting 1984 documentary Footloose.
