Every third Friday of May is National Defense Transportation Day in the USA.
This observance recognizes the contribution of men and women to the nation’s well-being and defense. National Defense Transportation Day does not have the status of public holiday, it is only an observance. However it hosts a number of activities including educational expos on transport, poster contest for schools, different programs with guest speakers.
National Defense Transportation Day was introduced 1957, when Congress designated the third Friday of May as the day it was recognized. The request was updated in 1962 and the whole week was included within the observance with the third Friday falling in as a part of National Transportation Week.
From then on, every year the President of the USA issues a proclamation, that designates the third Friday of May as the day for observance. Appropriate ceremonies are held to recognize the importance of countries’ transportation system and maintenance of its facilities for needs of the U.S. in national defense and in the time of peace.
