National French Bread Day 2020

It’s National French Bread Day on the 21st March. Why not bake a loaf of French bread to celebrate? There are many kinds of French bread, but the most popular one is the baguette. It’s adored for its crispy exterior and soft interior. You might find this surprising, but the dough recipe, as well as the length and width of the ever popular loaf, is enshrined in the law of France. That’s why the taste never changes. This is one law which gets the thumbs up from me.

You might find this hard to believe (I did), but the baguette was unknown until the dawn of the last century. French bakers always worked throughout the night to ensure fresh bread to the public in the morning. But in 1920, a law was passed disallowing shifts from starting before 4 am.

This change in the laws of the land left the French bakers very little time to prepare the bread, so they did some experimenting and ultimately invented the baguette. This bread baked in less time. The French public took this new bread to their hearts. It was a huge success. And of course, it’s now part and parcel of French life.

Besides the baguette, there is a large variety of much-loved bread in France. There’s the ever-popular croissant, as well as numerous others. So, celebrate this special day with gusto by baking your own loaf of French bread. Enjoy with the whole family and say Vive La France’.
