National Mills Weekend 2019

National Mills Weekend is the annual festival of our milling heritage and provides you with a fantastic opportunity to visit mills, many of which are not usually open to the public.

In 2019 it will take place on the 11th and 12th May and we hope even more mills than in previous years will open their
doors and welcome visitors. Until the advent of the steam engine, wind and watermills provided the only source of power for many different processes – from making flour, paper, cloth to hammering metal and extracting oils. You
can explore mills that produced, or still produce these products, some restored to working order, some derelict, some still working commercially.

Themes
In 2014 & 2015 we celebrated Mills in Art. In 2016 the theme was Vintage Power. The 2017 theme was Engineers and Engineering. In 2018 the theme was Mills and Wildlife.

Search for mills open in your area:
To find the mills open in your area, search for your county in our Windmills and Watermills pages. Given the number of mills open, we have divided the mills by their type – Windmills or Watermills.

A new aid for visiting mills, especially over National Mills Weekend.
Those of you with Android on your phone can install a free app that means you can have the information from the website with you, even when you are out and about, quite possibly without an internet connection to contact the site. You can get it at:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details
The app links with your other apps, such as mapping to give you directions to the various mills, and if you do have an internet connection, you can use it to pull up more information about many of the mills from Windmill World and the Mills Archive.
The app will be updated as details of this year’s Mills Weekend are finalized at various mills.
