National Patient Participation Week 2020

National Patient Participation Week 2019 is a national event held each June and aims to raise the profile of Patient Participation Groups (PPGs) who work with the NHS, especially in GP surgeries, to help steer NHS treatment by using the experiences and evaluations of NHS patients.

Patient Participants use lived experience to influence the way patients are treated by GPs and medical professionals. The week also promote the work of the National Association of Patient Participation,(NAPP), which allows patient participation groups to work together nationally.

PPGs are a contractual requirement, meaning that NHS medical Centres and GP services have to have a patient participant group and thus receive patient feedback to influence the way treatment of patients is carried out. The idea of patient participation was raised in 1974, so it has been around for three decades now, and has progressed to being a mandatory, nationwide and coherent movement.

Aims of the day include honouring the work of participants and encouraging new participants. as well as making the general public aware that Patient Participation groups exist and advertising the work that the groups carry out in helping health professionals to understand treatment both medical and personal, from the patient’s point of view. A quality control service from those on the receiving end of medical treatment and a voice for each surgery’s users.

Patient Participation week offers talks, conferences, information events, open days at medical centres, and more. Anything that publicises patient participation.
