School Diversity Week 2017 it the UK’s celebration of LGBT+ equality in education. The charity, Just Like Us, produces a free toolkit to help teachers and pupils run an event in the week that celebrates LGBT+ equality and challenges prejudice.
It’s easy to get involved: organise anything from a single LGBT+-focused PSHE session to a full week of school-wide activities. It’s a great opportunity to inspire student-led social action, developing important life skills like leadership, public speaking and planning.
Its goal is to address the ongoing challenge of growing up LGBT+. Bullying and discrimination remain facts of life for LGBT+ students at school – 96% still hear homophobic remarks – with devastating results: 50% self-harm and 25% attempt suicide.
