The National Influenza Vaccination Week 2018

This awareness event focuses on the importance of the influenza vaccination.  It is promoted throughout the week starting on December 2nd and ending December 8th 2018.

The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention established the awareness week in 2005 in order to stress the importance of vaccinating against influenza throughout the holiday season and beyond.    As well as raising awareness about receiving the vaccination and encouraging people to do so, the campaign hopes to inform people about the risks that flu can bring to those people at risk and further encourage people to get vaccinated – particularly post November, when data shows that numbers of people receiving the vaccination drops off significantly.

It is of crucial importance that this message reaches those who are considered at risk, those people being:

  • young children
  • pregnant women
  • people with chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart and lung conditions.

The CDC reports that in 2016, the percentage of adults taking up the vaccination fell by 3% in the year.  Therefore it is important that this very important campaign is promoted and more people, particularly those at risk are made aware of the benefits of the vaccination and act upon the information they are provided with.

With a wealth of information about the vaccination on the CDC and partners website, including tool kits and web tools, there really is no excuse for becoming better informed and helping to prevent and control the spread of infections which can be easily prevented.
