Movember has become one of the most recognised mens health campaigns across the globe, with celebrity endorsements, media coverage and millions of of people supporting the campaign- and rightly so.
The brain child of two guys from Australia in 2003 who while discussing fashion trends over a beer decided to try and bring back into fashion the moustache. Inspired by a friends mother who was fundraising for breast cancer the pair decided to focus on fundraising for mens health and prostate cancer. Rounding up some friends and charging $10 to participate, they developed some basic rules which are still in place today, designed a logo and the rest as they say is history. Following the initial success, in 2004 the business was registered and the details made official.
The first official partner of Prostate Cancer Foundation Australia, the ‘Give Prostate Cancer a Kick in the Arse’ campaign raised AUD 1.2million with 9315 Mo Bros participating. This was the single largest donation ever received by the PCFA. The success of the campaign internationally meant that members of the original team set up offices overseas – Los Angeles in the US working with the The Prostate Cancer Foundation and since then the movement has grown at an astonishing rate and the good work they cover has expanded to cover 4 key areas of mens health: Prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity. With 5.6million men worldwide living with prostate cancer the work that Movember has funded is invaluable.
Although dealing with an incredibly serious subject, the Movember team are determined to keep fun and respect at the heart of their campaigns. They have several wacky and inventive ways to support the cause including:
- Grow a moustache
- Move for Movember
- Host a Mo-ment
- Movember challenges
- Prizes & rewards
