SUMMARY:World Book and Copyright Day 2027
DESCRIPTION:World Book and Copyright Day takes place on 23 April each year and is a UNESCO-designated international observance celebrating books\, reading\, and the legal protections that safeguard authors’ intellectual property. Established in 1995\, the day honours the literary contributions of writers past and present while encouraging people of all ages to pick up a book. \nWhat is World Book and Copyright Day?\nWorld Book and Copyright Day is an annual observance created by UNESCO’s General Conference to promote reading\, publishing\, and the protection of intellectual property through copyright. The day recognises that books remain one of the most powerful tools for education\, cultural exchange\, and the preservation of knowledge. UNESCO describes books as “a bridge between generations and across cultures\,” and this day serves as a global reminder of their enduring importance. The observance also draws attention to copyright law and its role in protecting the creative work of authors\, illustrators\, and publishers worldwide. \nWhen is World Book and Copyright Day?\nWorld Book and Copyright Day falls on Thursday\, 23 April 2026. It is observed on the same fixed date every year. April 23 shares the calendar with two other literary observances already featured on this site: World Book Night and English Language Day\, though each has a distinct focus and history. \n\n\n\nYear\nDate\n\n\n\n\n2025\nWednesday\, 23 April\n\n\n2026\nThursday\, 23 April\n\n\n2027\nFriday\, 23 April\n\n\n2028\nSunday\, 23 April\n\n\n2029\nMonday\, 23 April\n\n\n\nThe Story Behind World Book and Copyright Day\nThe origins of World Book and Copyright Day trace back to Catalonia in northeastern Spain\, where 23 April has long been celebrated as La Diada de Sant Jordi – the feast day of Saint George. A cherished Catalan tradition sees couples exchange roses and books on this date\, turning the streets of Barcelona into open-air bookshops. The custom of gifting books on Sant Jordi gained momentum throughout the twentieth century and eventually caught the attention of UNESCO. \nIn 1995\, UNESCO’s General Conference\, meeting in Paris\, voted to establish 23 April as World Book and Copyright Day. The choice of date was deliberate: it marks the anniversary of the death of both Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare in 1616\, along with the Peruvian-born chronicler Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. A calendar curiosity worth noting – Shakespeare and Cervantes died on the same recorded date but not actually on the same day. Spain had adopted the Gregorian calendar by 1616\, while England still used the Julian calendar. Shakespeare’s death on 23 April Julian actually corresponded to 3 May Gregorian\, placing it eleven days after Cervantes was buried. \nRegardless of the calendrical footnote\, the symbolic power of the date was undeniable. UNESCO’s resolution aimed to promote reading\, publishing\, and the protection of intellectual property worldwide. The initiative quickly gained global traction. By 2001\, UNESCO had introduced the World Book Capital programme\, selecting one city each year to serve as a focal point for literary celebration and book-industry development. Madrid\, Spain\, was the inaugural capital\, and the programme has since honoured cities across every inhabited continent. \nWorld Book Capital 2026: Rabat\, Morocco\nEach year\, UNESCO selects a World Book Capital city in partnership with the International Publishers Association\, the International Booksellers Federation\, and the International Federation of Library Associations. The chosen city commits to a year-long programme of events\, investments\, and initiatives centred on books and reading. The celebrations officially begin on 23 April – World Book and Copyright Day. \nFor 2026\, UNESCO has designated Rabat\, Morocco as the World Book Capital. Rabat is the twenty-sixth city to hold the title\, following Rio de Janeiro (2025)\, Strasbourg (2024)\, and Accra (2023). As World Book Capital\, Rabat will roll out initiatives aimed at expanding access to books\, supporting Morocco’s publishing industry\, and promoting literacy across all age groups. The designation places a spotlight on North Africa’s literary culture and the growing strength of Arabic-language publishing. \nWhy World Book and Copyright Day Matters\nBooks remain the foundation of education\, research\, and cultural identity in every society. UNESCO estimates that 63 cities in its Creative Cities Network have prioritised literature in their sustainable development strategies\, reflecting the growing recognition that reading and publishing are engines of both economic growth and social cohesion. Copyright protection\, the day’s second pillar\, ensures that authors and creators can earn a livelihood from their work – an issue that has grown more complex with the rise of digital publishing\, artificial intelligence\, and online piracy. \nThe day also serves as a prompt for governments\, schools\, and communities to address literacy challenges. According to UNESCO\, an estimated 773 million adults worldwide lack basic literacy skills. World Book and Copyright Day provides a platform to highlight these disparities and advocate for greater investment in education\, libraries\, and publishing infrastructure\, particularly in lower-income countries. \nHow World Book and Copyright Day is Celebrated\nCelebrations vary widely from country to country\, but common activities include: \n\nPublic readings and literary events – Libraries\, bookshops\, schools\, and cultural centres host author readings\, book launches\, poetry recitals\, and relay readings of classic works. Many events are free and open to all ages.\nBook gifting and exchanges – Following the Catalan Sant Jordi tradition\, many communities organise book swaps or encourage people to gift a book to someone they care about. Some cities set up outdoor book stalls for the occasion.\nLiterary competitions and awards – Writing competitions\, essay prizes\, and reading challenges are launched or announced on 23 April. Schools often use the day to celebrate student writing.\nCopyright awareness campaigns – Publishers’ associations and intellectual property organisations run events explaining the importance of copyright\, fair use\, and the rights of creators in the digital age.\nLibrary open days – Public and university libraries mark the day with exhibitions\, guided tours\, membership drives\, and special collections displays.\nSocial media campaigns – Readers share their favourite books\, reading recommendations\, and shelfie photographs using dedicated hashtags. UNESCO and partner organisations amplify these through their channels.\nWorld Book Capital events – The designated capital city (Rabat in 2026) hosts flagship events that attract international attention and serve as a centrepiece for the day’s global celebrations.\n\nNoteworthy Facts\n\nWorld Book and Copyright Day has been observed every year since 1995 – making 2026 its thirty-first edition.\nThe World Book Capital programme has honoured 26 cities across six continents since Madrid was named the first capital in 2001.\nUNESCO’s Universal Copyright Convention\, adopted in 1952\, extended international copyright protection to countries outside the Berne Convention framework.\nThe Catalan tradition of exchanging books on Sant Jordi (23 April) dates back to the early twentieth century. Catalonia accounts for roughly four million books sold on that single day each year.\nUNESCO publications are translated into over 70 languages\, reflecting the organisation’s commitment to multilingual access to knowledge.\n\nFrequently Asked Questions\nWhat is World Book and Copyright Day?\nWorld Book and Copyright Day is a UNESCO observance held on 23 April each year. SUMMARY:World Spanish Language Day
DESCRIPTION:World Spanish Language Day is observed on 23 April each year\, celebrating the history\, culture\, and global reach of the Spanish language. Established by the United Nations Department of Public Information in 2010\, the day is part of a broader initiative to promote multilingualism and cultural diversity across the UN’s six official languages. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Story Behind World Spanish Language Day\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe origins of World Spanish Language Day are rooted in the United Nations’ commitment to multilingualism. In 2010\, the UN Department of Public Information launched a series of language days to celebrate each of the organisation’s six official languages – Arabic\, Chinese\, English\, French\, Russian\, and Spanish. The purpose was to promote equal use of all six working languages throughout the organisation\, raise awareness about their histories and cultural contributions\, and foster respect for linguistic diversity. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe date of 23 April was selected in honour of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra\, the Spanish novelist\, poet\, and playwright best known for “Don Quixote\,” widely considered the first modern novel and one of the greatest works of fiction ever written. Cervantes died on 22 April 1616\, and his burial took place on 23 April. Remarkably\, this date also coincides with the death of William Shakespeare\, creating a poetic connection between two of the world’s most celebrated literary figures. It is fitting\, then\, that English Language Day is also celebrated on 23 April\, and World Book and Copyright Day falls on the same date. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInitially\, the UN Spanish Language Day was observed on 12 October\, coinciding with Día de la Hispanidad (Hispanic Day)\, celebrated in several Spanish-speaking countries to mark the arrival of Columbus in the Americas. However\, the date was later changed to 23 April to honour Cervantes and to align with the wider celebration of literature and linguistic heritage. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSince its inception\, the day has grown in scope and significance\, with the UN Secretariat\, universities\, cultural institutions\, and Spanish-speaking communities around the world organising events that celebrate the richness of the Spanish language and the diverse cultures it represents. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen and Where is World Spanish Language Day Celebrated?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorld Spanish Language Day is observed on 23 April every year. In 2026\, it falls on Thursday\, 23 April. The date is fixed and does not change. Celebrations take place at UN headquarters in New York\, UN offices worldwide\, and in Spanish-speaking communities and cultural institutions across the globe. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTraditions and Customs\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nLiterary readings and Cervantes tributes – Events frequently feature readings from “Don Quixote” and other works of Spanish literature\, honouring the language’s rich literary tradition and the legacy of Cervantes.\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCultural exhibitions – The UN and partner organisations host exhibitions showcasing the art\, music\, cinema\, and cultural heritage of the Spanish-speaking world.\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpanish language workshops – Many institutions offer free Spanish language lessons\, conversation circles\, or workshops on translation and interpretation to encourage language learning.\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nFilm screenings and music performances – Events often include screenings of Spanish-language films and performances of music from across the Spanish-speaking world\, celebrating the diversity of cultural expression within a shared linguistic tradition.\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCulinary celebrations – Food plays a central role in many observances\, with tastings and cooking demonstrations featuring cuisines from Spain\, Mexico\, Argentina\, Colombia\, Peru\, and other Spanish-speaking nations.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWays to Celebrate World Spanish Language Day\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRead a work of Spanish-language literature – Whether it is Cervantes’ “Don Quixote\,” Gabriel García Márquez’s “One Hundred Years of Solitude\,” or Isabel Allende’s “The House of the Spirits\,” immerse yourself in the richness of Spanish-language writing.\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nStart learning Spanish – If you have ever wanted to learn Spanish\, use the day as your starting point. SUMMARY:World Penguin Day 2027
DESCRIPTION:What is World Penguin Day?\nWorld Penguin Day is an annual awareness day celebrated on 25 April\, dedicated to raising awareness about penguins\, their habitats\, and the conservation challenges they face. The date coincides with the approximate start of the annual northward migration of Adelie penguins in Antarctica\, making it a natural moment to celebrate these remarkable creatures and draw attention to the threats endangering their survival. \nWhen is World Penguin Day?\nWorld Penguin Day takes place on 25 April every year. In 2026\, it falls on Saturday 25 April. \n\n\n\nYear\nDate\nDay\n\n\n\n\n2026\n25 April\nSaturday\n\n\n2027\n25 April\nSunday\n\n\n2028\n25 April\nTuesday\n\n\n\nWhy World Penguin Day Matters\nPenguins are among the most beloved and recognisable animals on the planet\, yet many species are under serious threat. Of the 18 known living penguin species\, 10 have been listed as endangered or vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The challenges facing penguins are numerous and interconnected\, making conservation efforts both urgent and complex. \nClimate change poses the most significant long-term threat to penguin populations. Rising global temperatures are causing sea ice to shrink in Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions\, directly affecting the habitats that penguins depend upon for breeding\, moulting\, and resting. Changes in sea ice also disrupt the availability of krill\, the tiny crustaceans that form the foundation of the Antarctic food web and are a primary food source for many penguin species. \nOverfishing compounds this problem by further reducing the availability of fish and krill in penguin feeding grounds. Industrial fishing operations compete directly with penguins for the same marine resources\, and the depletion of fish stocks can force penguins to travel further to find food\, reducing their breeding success and chick survival rates. \nOil pollution is another serious concern. Oil spills can devastate penguin colonies\, coating their feathers and destroying the waterproofing and insulation that penguins need to survive in cold waters. Even small amounts of oil can be fatal\, and the effects of a major spill can be felt by a penguin population for years or even decades. \nFascinating Penguin Facts\nPenguins are extraordinary animals that have evolved remarkable adaptations to life in some of the harshest environments on Earth. Although they cannot fly\, their wings have evolved into powerful flippers that make them superb swimmers. Some species can reach speeds of up to 15 miles per hour in the water\, and emperor penguins are capable of diving to depths of more than 500 metres\, holding their breath for over 20 minutes. \nPenguins are found exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere\, with populations ranging from the frozen shores of Antarctica to the temperate coasts of South Africa\, South America\, New Zealand\, and even the Galapagos Islands near the equator. The emperor penguin is the tallest species\, standing up to 1.2 metres tall\, while the little blue penguin of Australia and New Zealand is the smallest\, reaching just 33 centimetres in height. \nThese birds are highly social creatures that live in large colonies\, sometimes numbering in the hundreds of thousands. They are known for their strong pair bonds\, with many species returning to the same mate and nesting site year after year. Emperor penguins are particularly renowned for their breeding behaviour\, in which the male incubates the egg on his feet through the brutal Antarctic winter while the female returns to the sea to feed. \nHow to Get Involved\nWorld Penguin Day is an opportunity to learn more about penguins and take action to support their conservation. You can get involved by learning about the penguin species that are most at risk and sharing what you discover on social media. Organisations such as Greenpeace\, the World Wildlife Fund\, and Penguins International run campaigns to protect Antarctic marine environments and reduce the threats facing penguin populations. \nSupporting sustainable seafood choices helps reduce the pressure of overfishing on penguin habitats. Reducing your carbon footprint contributes to the broader fight against climate change\, which is the single greatest threat to penguin survival. Visiting accredited zoos and aquariums that participate in penguin conservation and breeding programmes is another way to show your support. \nHistory of World Penguin Day\nWorld Penguin Day originated at McMurdo Station\, an American research centre on Ross Island in Antarctica. Researchers at the station noticed that Adelie penguins began their annual northward migration around 25 April each year\, and they began marking the date as an informal celebration. The tradition grew over time and eventually became a recognised global awareness day\, with events and activities taking place around the world to celebrate penguins and advocate for their protection. \n#WorldPenguinDay #PenguinConservation #ProtectAntarctica \nGet the 2026 ToolkitEvery awareness day in 2026 — spreadsheet\, PDF calendars\, iCal feed and unlimited reading. SUMMARY:International Delegates’ Day
DESCRIPTION:International Delegates’ Day is observed on 25 April each year\, recognising the role of representatives and delegates of Member States to the United Nations. Proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2019\, the day marks the anniversary of the opening of the San Francisco Conference in 1945\, where delegates from 50 countries came together to draft the Charter of the United Nations. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Story Behind International Delegates’ Day\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn 25 April 1945\, delegates from 50 countries assembled in San Francisco for what would become known as the United Nations Conference on International Organization. The gathering was a defining moment in modern history: the world was still engulfed in the Second World War\, and the delegates had been charged with creating an international body that could prevent future conflicts and promote cooperation among nations. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOver two months of intensive negotiations\, the delegates drafted the Charter of the United Nations\, which was signed on 26 June 1945. The Charter established the structure and principles of the United Nations\, including its commitment to maintaining international peace and security\, developing friendly relations among nations\, promoting human rights\, and serving as a forum for harmonising the actions of nations. The UN officially came into existence on 24 October 1945\, when the Charter was ratified by the required number of member states. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor decades\, the anniversary of the San Francisco Conference passed without a dedicated observance. That changed on 2 April 2019\, when the General Assembly adopted Resolution 73/286\, proclaiming 25 April as International Delegates’ Day. The resolution recalls the historic achievement of the San Francisco Conference and recognises the essential role that delegates play in advancing the UN’s mission. The first official celebration of International Delegates’ Day took place in 2020. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe day is intended not only to honour current delegates but also to pay tribute to the original 50 delegations whose vision and diplomacy laid the foundation for the multilateral system that continues to shape global affairs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen and Where is International Delegates’ Day Observed?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInternational Delegates’ Day is observed on 25 April each year. In 2026\, it falls on Saturday\, 25 April. The date is fixed and does not change. Observances take place primarily at UN headquarters in New York and at UN offices around the world\, though the day is also recognised by diplomatic communities\, universities\, and international relations institutions globally. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTraditions and Customs\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCommemorative events at the UN – The UN Secretariat and member state missions typically organise panel discussions\, exhibitions\, and receptions that highlight the work of delegates and the history of the United Nations.\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nEducational programmes – Universities and Model United Nations (MUN) groups often mark the day with special sessions\, lectures\, or simulations that introduce young people to the work of international diplomacy.\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTributes to the San Francisco Conference – Events may include screenings of historical footage from the 1945 conference\, displays of archival documents\, and presentations on the drafting of the UN Charter.\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSocial media campaigns – The UN and its agencies share stories\, photographs\, and profiles of delegates past and present\, highlighting the diverse backgrounds and contributions of those who serve at the organisation.\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nMultilingual celebrations – Given the international nature of the UN\, events often incorporate multiple languages and cultural traditions\, reflecting the diversity of the organisation’s membership.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWays to Mark International Delegates’ Day\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nLearn about the UN Charter – Read the Charter of the United Nations\, the foundational document that has guided international relations since 1945. SUMMARY:Anzac Day
DESCRIPTION:Anzac Day is observed on 25 April each year\, falling on Sunday\, 25 April in 2027. It is a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand\, honouring the members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps who served at Gallipoli in 1915\, and all those who have served and died in wars\, conflicts\, and peacekeeping operations since. \nThe Story Behind Anzac Day\nAnzac Day commemorates the events of 25 April 1915\, when soldiers of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landed on the Gallipoli peninsula in present-day Turkey. It was the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. What had been planned as a swift campaign to knock the Ottoman Empire out of the war soon descended into a grinding stalemate\, met with fierce resistance from the Ottoman Army commanded by Mustafa Kemal\, later known as Atatürk. \nThe campaign dragged on for eight months across harsh terrain and brutal conditions. By the time Allied forces were evacuated at the end of 1915\, both sides had suffered enormous losses. Allied deaths exceeded 56\,000\, including 8\,709 from Australia and 2\,721 from New Zealand. Although Gallipoli was a military failure\, the courage\, endurance\, and mateship shown by the troops left a deep and lasting mark on both nations. \nThe first Anzac Day was held in 1916\, on the first anniversary of the landing\, with ceremonies and services across Australia and New Zealand\, as well as among troops serving overseas. In the years that followed\, the day grew into a solemn national occasion. By the 1920s it had become established as a day of remembrance\, and its meaning gradually broadened beyond Gallipoli to honour all Australians and New Zealanders who have served their countries in times of war. \nWhen and Where is Anzac Day Commemorated?\nAnzac Day is held on 25 April every year. However\, some people and communities choose to celebrate it in late April\, aligning it with stress awareness initiatives that often take place in the spring. \nHow to Celebrate Scream Day\nThere are several fun and creative ways to participate in Scream Day: \n\nScream Alone: Find a private\, safe space where you can let out a loud scream. Whether in your car\, at home\, or out in nature\, take a deep breath and release all your stress with a powerful yell.\nScream with Friends: Gather a group of friends and scream together. Doing it as a group can amplify the fun and create a sense of camaraderie. It’s a shared experience that can be both amusing and therapeutic.\nScream into a Pillow: If you’re worried about disturbing others\, scream into a pillow to muffle the sound. This can be a great way to release tension quietly while still enjoying the benefits of a good scream.\nParticipate in a Scream Event: Some communities or groups may organize Scream Day events where people can come together to scream in unison. Check local listings or online groups for any planned activities.\nShare Your Scream: Use social media to share your Scream Day experience. Post a video or a story about how screaming helped you feel better\, and encourage others to join in the fun. Use relevant hashtags to connect with others celebrating the day.\n\nHistory of the Event\nThe origins of Scream Day are not well-documented\, but the idea likely stems from the psychological benefits of catharsis – the process of releasing strong or repressed emotions. Screaming has long been recognized as a way to relieve stress and tension\, and Scream Day has grown in popularity as a way to promote mental health and wellness through this simple yet powerful act. \nRelevant Hashtags\n\n#ScreamDay\n#LetItOut\n#StressRelief\n#Catharsis\n#ReleaseTheTension\n\nWhen is Scream Day 2027?\n\n\n\nYear\nDate\n\n\n\n\n2027\n26 April\n\n\n2028\nTBC\n\n\n\nGet the 2026 ToolkitEvery awareness day in 2026 — spreadsheet\, PDF calendars\, iCal feed and unlimited reading. SUMMARY:AMKD Awareness Day 2027
DESCRIPTION:What is AMKD Awareness Day?\nThe American Kidney Fund (AKF)’s AMKD Awareness Day aims to spread awareness of APOL1-mediated kidney disease (AMKD)\, a spectrum of kidney diseases associated with mutations in the apolipoprotein L1 (APOL1) gene and linked to an increased risk for rapidly progressing kidney disease in people of Western and Central African descent. \nEveryone has two copies of the APOL1 gene\, but people who have Western and Central African ancestry\, including people who identify as Black\, African American\, Afro-Caribbean\, and/or Latina/Latino\, are at an increased risk of having a mutation in one or both of the genes. These mutations put people at a higher risk of developing kidney disease such as focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). \nIt is estimated that 13% of Black Americans have mutations in both genes\, the high-risk APOL1 genotypes. People who have both mutations of the APOL1 gene have a 1 in 5 chance of developing kidney disease and are more likely to develop kidney failure. \nWhen is AMKD Awareness Day 2027?\nCoinciding with National Minority Health Month\, AMKD Awareness Day is recognized on the last Tuesday of April annually. In 2027 it falls on Tuesday 27 April. AKF will provide resources and ways to engage and raise awareness of the important connection between APOL1 gene variants and kidney disease. \nGet the 2026 ToolkitEvery awareness day in 2026 — spreadsheet\, PDF calendars\, iCal feed and unlimited reading. SUMMARY:World Day for Safety and Health at Work
DESCRIPTION:World Day for Safety and Health at Work takes place on 28 April every year. Led by the International Labour Organization\, the day promotes the prevention of occupational accidents\, injuries\, and diseases\, and remembers the millions of workers killed or harmed by their work each year. \nWhat is World Day for Safety and Health at Work?\nWorld Day for Safety and Health at Work is an annual United Nations observance led by the International Labour Organization (ILO). The day is designed to focus international attention on emerging trends in occupational safety and health\, and on the scale of work-related accidents\, illnesses\, and deaths worldwide. It is observed by governments\, employers\, trade unions\, safety bodies\, and workers themselves through campaigns\, training events\, and policy discussions. \nWhen is World Day for Safety and Health at Work?\nWorld Day for Safety and Health at Work takes place on Tuesday\, 28 April 2026. The date is the same each year. It coincides with the International Workers’ Memorial Day\, also held on 28 April\, which has been organised by the global trade union movement since 1996 to remember workers killed or injured on the job. \nWhy World Day for Safety and Health at Work Matters\nThe ILO estimates that around 2.78 million workers die each year as a result of occupational accidents and work-related diseases\, with a further 374 million workers suffering non-fatal occupational injuries. The World Health Organization and ILO have estimated that long working hours alone cause around 745\,000 deaths annually from stroke and heart disease. Behind these figures are families\, communities\, and economies bearing the long-term cost of preventable harm. The day matters because it makes the case for prevention\, dignified working conditions\, and a fundamental right to safe and healthy work\, recognised by the ILO in 2022 as part of its core Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work. \nHow to Get Involved in World Day for Safety and Health at Work\nWhether you are a worker\, employer\, or union representative\, the day offers many ways to take part. \n\nHold a safety stand-down – Many workplaces stop production for a short period during the day to talk about a specific safety issue and listen to staff concerns.\nReview your risk assessments – Use the day as a prompt to revisit risk assessments\, near-miss reports\, and accident statistics\, especially for tasks that haven’t been reviewed for some time.\nSupport a workplace health initiative – From mental health first aid to ergonomic assessments\, the day is a good time to launch or refresh a wellbeing programme.\nMark Workers’ Memorial Day – Attend a memorial service or wreath-laying ceremony organised by trade unions and remember workers killed or harmed by their work.\nProvide training – Run refresher training on first aid\, manual handling\, fire safety\, or specific industry hazards.\nTalk about psychosocial risks – Stress\, harassment\, and excessive workload are now recognised as occupational health issues. Use the day to open honest conversations about these.\nEngage with younger workers – Workers under 25 are statistically more likely to be injured at work. Use the day to support induction\, mentoring\, and supervision practices.\nPromote workers’ right to refuse unsafe work – Make sure staff know they have a legally protected right to refuse work they reasonably believe is unsafe.\n\nHistory of World Day for Safety and Health at Work\nThe history of 28 April begins with the global trade union movement. In 1989\, Canadian unions began holding a National Day of Mourning on 28 April to remember workers killed and injured on the job. The movement spread to the United States and other countries\, becoming the International Commemoration Day for Dead and Injured Workers\, also known as Workers’ Memorial Day\, from 1996 onwards. \nThe International Labour Organization adopted 28 April as its World Day for Safety and Health at Work in 2003\, building on the trade union tradition and adding a strong focus on prevention. The first ILO observance was part of the Global Strategy on Occupational Safety and Health agreed at the International Labour Conference in June 2003. Each year since\, the ILO has chosen a theme\, often reflecting an emerging issue such as digital transformation\, climate change\, or psychosocial risks. \nIn 2022\, the International Labour Conference adopted a resolution recognising “a safe and healthy working environment” as one of the ILO’s Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work. This was a major milestone in workplace safety\, ensuring that all ILO member states have an obligation to respect\, promote\, and realise this principle\, regardless of whether they have ratified specific conventions. \nNoteworthy Facts About World Day for Safety and Health at Work\n\nThe ILO estimates around 2.78 million worker deaths every year are linked to occupational accidents and work-related diseases.\nThe day is observed alongside International Workers’ Memorial Day\, which began in Canada in 1989 and went international in 1996.\nIn 2022\, the ILO adopted “a safe and healthy working environment” as a Fundamental Principle and Right at Work.\nWHO and ILO research has linked long working hours to around 745\,000 deaths from stroke and ischaemic heart disease each year.\nThe day’s themes in recent years have included digital transformation\, climate change\, AI in the workplace\, and psychosocial risks.\n\nFrequently Asked Questions\nWhat is World Day for Safety and Health at Work?\nIt is an annual observance led by the International Labour Organization to promote occupational safety and health and remember workers harmed by work\, held every 28 April. \nWhen is World Day for Safety and Health at Work in 2026?\nIt falls on Tuesday\, 28 April 2026. \nHow is it different from Workers’ Memorial Day?\nThe two are observed on the same day. SUMMARY:Stop Food Waste Day 2027
DESCRIPTION:Stop Food Waste Day is a global initiative dedicated to raising awareness about the critical issue of food waste and encouraging individuals\, businesses\, and communities to take action. Wasting food not only squanders valuable resources such as water\, labor\, and energy but also contributes significantly to climate change through greenhouse gas emissions. Observed annually\, Stop Food Waste Day highlights practical steps everyone can take to reduce food waste\, save money\, and help build a more sustainable future for our planet. \nWhat is Stop Food Waste Day?\nStop Food Waste Day was launched in 2017 by Compass Group\, one of the world’s largest food services companies\, as a way to bring global attention to the massive issue of food waste. The initiative is aimed at educating people about the causes and impacts of food waste\, and inspiring collective action to combat it. \nFood waste occurs at every stage of the food supply chain\, from farms to production facilities\, supermarkets to kitchens. Around one-third of all food produced globally is lost or wasted\, while millions of people suffer from hunger. Stop Food Waste Day calls for greater awareness\, smarter shopping\, better meal planning\, improved storage practices\, and creative ways to use leftovers. \nWhen is Stop Food Waste Day?\nStop Food Waste Day is observed on the last Wednesday of April each year. Many foods are still safe to consume after their “best before” date\, depending on storage and appearance.\nStore Food Properly: Proper storage can extend the life of fresh produce\, dairy products\, and meats. Use airtight containers\, understand ideal refrigerator temperatures\, and rotate older foods to the front.\nUse Leftovers Creatively: Turn leftover vegetables into soups\, make stir-fries from extra rice\, or blend overripe fruits into smoothies. Get creative to minimize waste and create delicious new meals.\nCompost Food Scraps: Composting food waste such as vegetable peels and coffee grounds keeps it out of landfills\, reduces methane emissions\, and produces nutrient-rich soil for gardening.\nSupport Food Recovery Initiatives: Donate surplus non-perishable foods to food banks and support organizations that redistribute food to those in need.\nEducate Others: Share tips\, recipes\, and information about food waste reduction with friends\, family\, and colleagues. Awareness leads to action!\nHost a Zero-Waste Dinner Party: Plan a meal using only ingredients you already have at home\, or challenge friends and family to do the same. It’s a fun and creative way to highlight sustainable eating habits.\nTrack Your Waste: Keep a food waste diary for a week to identify patterns and areas where you can improve. Small changes often lead to big results.\n\nWhy is Stop Food Waste Day Important?\nFood waste is not just an environmental issue – it’s a humanitarian\, economic\, and ethical problem. Reducing food waste helps conserve valuable resources\, reduce greenhouse gas emissions\, combat hunger\, and save money. SUMMARY:May Day
DESCRIPTION:May Day is a traditional spring festival celebrated on 1 May across Europe and beyond\, marking the arrival of warmer weather and the renewal of the natural world. In 2027 it falls on Saturday\, 1 May. With roots stretching back thousands of years to ancient seasonal rites\, May Day today blends folk customs such as maypole dancing and the crowning of a May Queen with its more modern significance as International Workers’ Day. \nThe Story Behind May Day\nMay Day is one of the oldest seasonal festivals in the European calendar\, with origins that predate the modern era by many centuries. Its earliest forms are linked to ancient celebrations of fertility and the return of spring. The Romans honoured Flora\, the goddess of flowers\, in the festival of Floralia held in late April and early May\, while the Celtic festival of Beltane\, marked at the start of May\, celebrated the beginning of summer with bonfires and rituals intended to protect livestock and crops. \nAs these traditions merged and evolved through the medieval period\, May Day became a community celebration of the season. Villages would gather greenery and flowers\, erect a maypole\, and choose a young woman to be crowned May Queen. Morris dancing\, feasting and the gathering of hawthorn blossom\, known as bringing in the may\, became central to the festivities across England and much of Europe. \nThe festival took on a second meaning in the late 19th century. In 1889 the international socialist movement designated 1 May as a day to campaign for workers’ rights\, chosen in memory of the Haymarket affair in Chicago in 1886. International Workers’ Day\, also known as Labour Day in many countries\, became a major occasion for rallies\, marches and trade union events\, and it remains a public holiday in numerous nations around the world. \nIn the United Kingdom the early May bank holiday was introduced in 1978\, giving workers a day off near May Day itself. While the traditional festival is fixed on 1 May\, the UK bank holiday falls on the first Monday of May\, which in 2027 is Monday 3 May. This means the two observances often sit close together but on different dates. \nWhen and Where is May Day Celebrated?\nMay Day is celebrated on 1 May\, which in 2027 falls on a Saturday. The traditional folk festival is marked across the United Kingdom\, Ireland and much of continental Europe\, while International Workers’ Day on the same date is observed in many countries worldwide. In Britain\, the separate early May bank holiday provides a long weekend and falls on the first Monday of May\, namely Monday 3 May in 2027. \nTraditions and Customs\nMay Day is rich in folk customs\, many of which have survived for centuries. \n\nMaypole dancing – Dancers weave ribbons around a tall decorated pole\, creating intricate patterns. The maypole is one of the most recognisable symbols of the festival.\nCrowning the May Queen – A young woman is chosen to represent the spirit of spring and lead the celebrations\, often wearing a crown of flowers.\nMorris dancing – Traditional English folk dancers perform at dawn and throughout the day\, accompanied by bells\, sticks and handkerchiefs.\nBringing in the may – People gather hawthorn blossom and greenery to decorate homes and public spaces\, welcoming the new season.\nWorkers’ marches – In many countries\, trade unions and political groups hold parades and rallies to mark International Workers’ Day.\n\nWays to Celebrate May Day\nThere are many ways to take part in the spirit of the day. \n\nWatch a maypole dance – Many villages and schools hold traditional maypole displays. Find a local event to enjoy the spectacle.\nAttend a May Day fair – Towns across the country host fetes\, markets and processions to celebrate the season.\nWelcome the dawn – In some places\, people gather at sunrise on 1 May to sing and watch morris dancers perform\, a custom famously kept in Oxford.\nDecorate with flowers – Bring spring indoors by gathering seasonal blooms and greenery for your home.\nEnjoy the long weekend – In the UK\, use the early May bank holiday to relax\, spend time outdoors or visit friends and family.\nLearn about workers’ rights – Reflect on the history of International Workers’ Day and the labour movements that shaped the modern workplace.\n\nFacts and Figures\n\nMay Day has roots in the ancient Roman festival of Floralia and the Celtic festival of Beltane.\nThe crowning of the May Queen and maypole dancing have been part of English May Day celebrations for centuries.\n1 May was chosen as International Workers’ Day in 1889 in memory of the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago.\nThe UK’s early May bank holiday was introduced in 1978 and falls on the first Monday of May.\nThe famous May Morning celebration in Oxford sees crowds gather beneath Magdalen College tower at 6am to hear choristers sing.\n\nFrequently Asked Questions\nWhat is May Day?\nMay Day is a traditional spring festival held on 1 May\, celebrating the season with customs such as maypole dancing and the crowning of a May Queen. The same date is also marked internationally as Workers’ Day. \nWhen is May Day in 2027?\nMay Day is on Saturday\, 1 May 2027. The separate UK early May bank holiday falls on the following Monday\, 3 May 2027. \nIs May Day the same as the bank holiday?\nNot exactly. May Day itself is always 1 May\, while the UK early May bank holiday is observed on the first Monday of May\, so the two dates often differ. \nSpread the Word\nShare May Day with your community using #MayDay and #MayDay2027. SUMMARY:World Ankylosing Spondylitis Day 2027
DESCRIPTION:World Ankylosing Spondylitis Day is a global awareness initiative aimed at educating the public about ankylosing spondylitis (AS)\, a type of inflammatory arthritis that primarily affects the spine. Observed annually in May\, the day brings together patients\, healthcare professionals\, researchers\, and advocacy organizations to raise awareness\, reduce stigma\, and promote timely diagnosis and access to appropriate care. It is a moment to stand in solidarity with individuals living with AS and other axial spondyloarthritis conditions worldwide. \nWhat is World Ankylosing Spondylitis Day?\nWorld Ankylosing Spondylitis Day is an international campaign organized by the Axial Spondyloarthritis International Federation (ASIF). It focuses on raising global awareness of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) – a chronic\, progressive autoimmune condition that causes inflammation in the spine and sacroiliac joints\, often leading to severe pain\, stiffness\, and even spinal fusion in advanced cases. \nAS typically begins in early adulthood and can significantly impact daily life\, mobility\, and mental health. However\, with early diagnosis and proper management – often involving physical therapy\, medication\, and lifestyle adaptations – many individuals can lead full and active lives. \nWorld AS Day also aims to highlight the broader spectrum of axial spondyloarthritis\, which includes both radiographic AS and non-radiographic forms\, and to promote inclusive care and support for all people living with these conditions. \nWhen is World Ankylosing Spondylitis Day?\nWorld Ankylosing Spondylitis Day is observed on the first Saturday of May each year. In 2027\, the day will be marked on Saturday\, May 1st. \nThe date is chosen to align international efforts and maximize visibility through events\, campaigns\, and digital engagement hosted by patient organizations\, clinics\, and advocacy groups. \nHow to Take Part in World AS Day\nThere are many impactful ways individuals and communities can participate in World Ankylosing Spondylitis Day: \n\nJoin awareness events: Attend webinars\, virtual runs\, or support group meetings to learn more and connect with the community.\nShare personal stories: Use social media to tell your story or share someone else’s experience with AS to inspire and inform others.\nDistribute educational content: Help spread accurate information about symptoms\, treatment options\, and living well with AS.\nAdvocate for early diagnosis: Encourage healthcare professionals and institutions to prioritize awareness and screening for axial spondyloarthritis.\nLight up landmarks: Collaborate with local governments or health organizations to illuminate buildings in blue to symbolize support.\n\nHealthcare providers are also encouraged to use the day to review best practices and increase their understanding of inflammatory back pain and early referral criteria. \nWhy World Ankylosing Spondylitis Day Matters\nWorld AS Day is crucial in addressing the common challenge of diagnostic delay – many individuals with AS wait years before receiving a proper diagnosis. This delay can lead to worsening symptoms\, reduced quality of life\, and irreversible spinal damage. \nBy fostering greater awareness\, challenging misconceptions\, and promoting evidence-based care\, World AS Day helps improve outcomes for people affected by this lifelong condition. It also empowers patients to advocate for their health\, connect with peers\, and access the resources they need to thrive. \nRelevant Hashtags\n#WorldASDay #AnkylosingSpondylitis #AxSpA #RheumatologyAwareness #ChronicIllnessAwareness #LivingWithAS \nRelevant Links\n\nOfficial World AS Day Website\nAxial Spondyloarthritis International Federation (ASIF)\nNHS Guide to Ankylosing Spondylitis\nSpondylitis Association of America\n\nGet the 2026 ToolkitEvery awareness day in 2026 — spreadsheet\, PDF calendars\, iCal feed and unlimited reading. SUMMARY:Lupus Awareness Month
DESCRIPTION:Every May\, people across the globe come together to shine a light on a complex\, often invisible illness: lupus. Lupus Awareness Month is about visibility\, understanding\, and action. For those living with this autoimmune disease\, it’s a chance to be heard. For everyone else\, it’s an opportunity to learn\, support\, and advocate for better research\, care\, and compassion. \nWhat is Lupus Awareness Month?\nLupus Awareness Month is an annual campaign dedicated to raising public awareness about lupus\, a chronic autoimmune condition that affects millions worldwide. Lupus causes the body’s immune system to attack healthy tissue\, leading to inflammation\, fatigue\, joint pain\, and damage to organs like the kidneys\, heart\, and brain. It’s unpredictable\, often invisible\, and commonly misunderstood. \nThroughout May\, nonprofits\, healthcare providers\, patient advocates\, and individuals come together to educate others\, share personal stories\, and push for better funding and research. It includes key dates like World Lupus Day on May 10\, which focuses on global advocacy efforts\, and Put On Purple Day\, where supporters wear purple to show solidarity with people living with lupus. \nOrganizations and communities use the month to host educational events\, social media campaigns\, awareness walks\, and fundraising drives. It’s a time to spotlight the challenges faced by lupus patients and the ongoing need for improved treatments and understanding. \nWhy Lupus Awareness Month Matters\nLupus is a life-altering disease that often hides in plain sight. Many people wait years for a diagnosis\, and even then\, face an uphill battle for proper care. Symptoms can come and go\, making it hard for others to understand just how serious the condition is. Understanding what daily life looks like is a powerful act of empathy.\nAdvocate for research funding: Contact your local representatives to ask for increased support for autoimmune disease research.\n\nHistory of Lupus Awareness Month\nLupus Awareness Month began as a grassroots movement among patient advocacy groups who saw the need for more public understanding of the disease. Over time\, national organizations like the Lupus Foundation of America (LFA) helped formalize the campaign\, choosing May as the official month for awareness activities. \nWorld Lupus Day\, observed on May 10 since 2004\, was established by lupus organizations from thirteen countries to bring global attention to the condition. Since then\, awareness efforts have expanded to include government proclamations\, celebrity endorsements\, and widespread community events. The purple ribbon has become the symbol of the cause – a visual reminder of strength\, struggle\, and hope. \nNoteworthy Facts About Lupus\n\nLupus affects approximately 5 million people worldwide\, with about 90% of patients being women.\nSymptoms vary widely and can include fatigue\, joint pain\, skin rashes\, fever\, and organ damage.\nThere is currently no cure for lupus\, and treatment focuses on managing symptoms and preventing flare-ups.\nOn average\, it takes six years from symptom onset to receive an accurate lupus diagnosis.\nPeople of African\, Hispanic\, Asian\, and Indigenous descent are at higher risk of developing lupus and may experience more severe symptoms.\n\nHashtags\n#LupusAwareness\, #LupusAwarenessMonth\, #PutOnPurple\, #WorldLupusDay\, #LupusWarrior \nLinks\n\nLupus Foundation of America – Lupus Awareness Month\nWorld Lupus Day – Official Site\nLUPUS UK – Patient Support and Resources\n\nWhen is Lupus Awareness Month?\n\n\n\nYear\nStart Date\nEnd Date\n\n\n\n\n2026\n1 May\n31 May\n\n\n2027\nTBC\nTBC\n\n\n2028\nTBC\nTBC\n\n\n\nGet the 2026 ToolkitEvery awareness day in 2026 — spreadsheet\, PDF calendars\, iCal feed and unlimited reading. SUMMARY:Mental Health Awareness Month 2027
DESCRIPTION:Mental Health Awareness Month takes place every May and is the longest-running awareness campaign dedicated to mental health in the United States. Founded by Mental Health America (MHA) in 1949\, the month-long observance encourages open conversation about mental illness\, promotes access to treatment and support services\, and works to dismantle the stigma that still prevents millions of people from seeking help. The 2026 theme is “More Good Days\, Together.” \nWhat Is Mental Health Awareness Month?\nMental Health Awareness Month is a nationally recognised observance held throughout May each year. It was established by Mental Health America – then known as the National Association for Mental Health – to educate the public about conditions such as depression\, anxiety\, bipolar disorder\, and schizophrenia. Throughout the month\, MHA and its network of more than 200 affiliates across the United States coordinate campaigns\, screenings\, community events\, and educational programmes designed to reach people wherever they are. While the observance originated in the US\, its influence has spread globally\, with organisations in the United Kingdom\, Australia\, Canada\, and beyond using May as an opportunity to amplify mental health messaging. \nWhen Is Mental Health Awareness Month?\nMental Health Awareness Month runs from Friday\, 1 May to Sunday\, 31 May 2026. It is observed every year throughout the entire month of May\, and the dates are fixed – they do not change from year to year. \nIn the United Kingdom\, the related Mental Health Awareness Week takes place from 11 to 17 May 2026\, organised by the Mental Health Foundation. While they share a common cause\, these are distinct observances run by different organisations in different countries. \nThe 2026 Theme: More Good Days\, Together\nEach year\, Mental Health America selects a theme to guide its May campaign. For 2026\, the theme is “More Good Days\, Together” – a message that reflects MHA’s core mission of helping people experience more good days by meeting them where they are\, supporting them as whole people\, and recognising that “good” looks different for everyone. The theme encourages individuals and communities to think about what a good day means to them and to use those personal insights to shape advocacy\, education\, and mutual support. \nMHA has released a comprehensive Action Guide for 2026\, offering online activities\, printable resources\, and practical tools for organisations\, workplaces\, educators\, and advocacy groups. Resources are available in both English and Spanish\, and a virtual kickoff event took place on 2 April 2026 to help communities prepare for the month ahead. \nWhy Mental Health Awareness Month Matters\nThe numbers paint a stark picture. According to the World Health Organisation\, more than one billion people worldwide live with a mental disorder – roughly one in every seven people on the planet. Anxiety and depressive disorders account for more than two-thirds of all cases\, and depression alone is the leading cause of disability among people aged 15 to 29. The economic toll is equally significant: the WHO estimates that depression and anxiety cost the global economy US$1 trillion annually in lost productivity. \nAccess to care remains deeply unequal. In low-income countries\, fewer than 10% of people who need mental health treatment actually receive it\, compared with over 50% in wealthier nations. Governments spend a median of just 2.1% of their health budgets on mental health\, and there are as few as one to two specialist mental health workers per 100\,000 people in the world’s poorest countries. Nearly half of all mental health conditions begin before the age of 18\, yet early intervention services remain underfunded and difficult to access in most regions. \nMental Health Awareness Month exists to confront these gaps. By bringing mental health into mainstream conversation every May\, the campaign helps normalise help-seeking behaviour\, challenges harmful stereotypes\, and pushes for policy changes that expand access to affordable\, quality mental health care. If you are also interested in how stress affects overall wellbeing\, Stress Awareness Month in April covers closely related ground. \nHow to Get Involved in Mental Health Awareness Month\nThere are many meaningful ways to participate\, whether you are an individual\, an employer\, an educator\, or a community organiser: \n\nTake a free mental health screening – MHA offers confidential\, clinically validated screening tools at screening.mhanational.org. These quick assessments can help you understand your current mental health and identify whether professional support might be beneficial.\nWear green and “Be Seen in Green” – The green ribbon is the international symbol of mental health awareness\, inspired by the red ribbon of HIV/AIDS awareness. MHA’s annual “Be Seen in Green” campaign encourages people to wear green clothing\, ribbons\, or accessories throughout May to show solidarity and spark conversation.\nShare your story on social media – Personal stories reduce stigma more effectively than almost any other intervention. Use the hashtags #MentalHealthMonth and #MoreGoodDays to share your experiences\, coping strategies\, or words of encouragement.\nOrganise a workplace mental health event – Host a lunch-and-learn session\, invite a mental health professional to speak\, distribute green ribbons\, or set up a wellness corner with MHA’s printable resources. The Lord Mayor’s Appeal in London runs a dedicated Green Ribbon Campaign each year\, encouraging businesses to create visible cultures of support.\nLight up a building or landmark in green – Landmarks around the world go green during May to raise visibility. If you manage a public building\, business premises\, or community space\, consider joining the effort.\nVolunteer with or donate to a mental health charity – Organisations such as MHA\, NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness)\, Mind\, Beyond Blue\, and the Mental Health Foundation all run campaigns during May and welcome volunteers and donations year-round.\nLearn Mental Health First Aid – Mental Health First Aid courses teach participants how to recognise the signs of mental health difficulties and offer initial support. Many providers run additional courses during May to coincide with the awareness month.\nCheck in on someone you care about – Sometimes the simplest action is the most powerful. A genuine conversation – asking someone how they are really doing\, and listening without judgement – can make a real difference.\n\nHistory of Mental Health Awareness Month\nThe story of Mental Health Awareness Month begins with one man’s determination to transform how society treats people with mental illness. In 1908\, Clifford Whittingham Beers published A Mind That Found Itself\, an autobiography describing the appalling conditions he endured during three years in psychiatric institutions in Connecticut. The book shocked the American public and ignited a reform movement. The following year\, on 19 February 1909\, Beers co-founded the National Committee for Mental Hygiene alongside philosopher William James and psychiatrist Adolf Meyer. This organisation would eventually become Mental Health America. \nIn 1949 – forty years after its founding – the organisation (by then called the National Association for Mental Health) launched the first Mental Health Awareness campaign. It originally ran for just one week\, but its success led to expansion. Over subsequent decades\, the campaign grew into a full month-long observance\, cemented in May to coincide with the anniversary of the organisation’s founding efforts. Congress has repeatedly recognised May as Mental Health Awareness Month\, and every sitting US president since the 1990s has issued a formal proclamation for the occasion. \nOn 16 November 2006\, the National Mental Health Association officially rebranded as Mental Health America\, reflecting its broadened mission and national reach. Today\, MHA operates through more than 200 affiliates in 41 states\, serving millions of Americans through advocacy\, education\, and direct services. The organisation’s annual May campaign now reaches tens of millions of people through social media\, traditional media coverage\, community events\, and its free online screening programme\, which has delivered over 16 million mental health screenings since its launch. \nThe Green Ribbon: Symbol of Mental Health\nThe green ribbon emerged as the international symbol of mental health awareness during the 1990s\, modelled on the red ribbon adopted by the HIV/AIDS movement. Green was chosen for its associations with growth\, renewal\, and hope – qualities central to the recovery journey. During Mental Health Awareness Month\, green ribbons are worn by individuals\, distributed in workplaces and schools\, and displayed on social media profiles worldwide. \nIn the United Kingdom\, the Lord Mayor’s Appeal runs an annual Green Ribbon Campaign\, calling on businesses to wear green ribbons as a sign of solidarity. The campaign aims to create a visible culture of support within workplaces\, demonstrate the level of commitment to employee wellbeing\, and encourage open conversations about mental health. Some organisations film employees passing origami green ribbons around their offices\, stitching the clips together into a single video to share online. \nMental Health in the Workplace\nWorkplace mental health has become one of the most prominent dimensions of Mental Health Awareness Month. The WHO estimates that 12 billion working days are lost annually to depression and anxiety\, costing the global economy US$1 trillion in lost productivity. Employers increasingly recognise that supporting staff mental health is both a moral responsibility and a business imperative. \nDuring May\, many organisations run dedicated workplace programmes: employee assistance programme (EAP) awareness campaigns\, manager training on recognising signs of distress\, flexible working arrangements\, and “wellbeing days” that give staff time off for self-care. Mental Health America’s Planning Guide provides detailed toolkits for employers looking to build or strengthen their May activities. \nNoteworthy Facts About Mental Health Awareness Month\n\nMental Health Awareness Month is the oldest mental health awareness campaign in the United States\, running continuously since 1949 – over 75 years.\nClifford Beers’ 1908 book A Mind That Found Itself is widely regarded as the catalyst for the modern mental health reform movement in the US.\nMHA’s free online screening programme has delivered more than 16 million mental health screenings\, making it one of the largest mental health screening initiatives in the world.\nThe 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988) launched in July 2022 in the United States\, providing round-the-clock crisis support. In the UK\, Samaritans can be reached on 116 123.\nNearly one in five US adults – approximately 57.8 million people – lives with a mental health condition\, according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).\nThe global mental health workforce gap means that in low-income countries\, there are fewer than two mental health professionals per 100\,000 people\, compared with over 67 in high-income countries.\n\nFrequently Asked Questions\nWhat is Mental Health Awareness Month?\nMental Health Awareness Month is a US-originated\, internationally observed campaign held every May. SUMMARY:Stroke Awareness Month
DESCRIPTION:Stroke Awareness Month is observed throughout May each year\, dedicated to raising public awareness about stroke prevention\, recognition\, and treatment. Led by the American Stroke Association\, a division of the American Heart Association\, the campaign educates communities about the warning signs of stroke\, the importance of acting quickly\, and how lifestyle changes can significantly reduce risk. Stroke remains the fifth leading cause of death and a leading cause of long-term disability in the United States. \nWhat is Stroke Awareness Month?\nStroke Awareness Month is a national health observance held every May to increase understanding of stroke\, a medical emergency that occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted or reduced. The American Stroke Association coordinates the campaign\, providing educational resources\, hosting webinars\, and distributing toolkits to healthcare professionals\, patients\, and community organisations. The month focuses on teaching people to recognise the signs of stroke using the FAST method and encouraging preventive measures such as managing blood pressure and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. \nWhen is Stroke Awareness Month?\nStroke Awareness Month runs throughout the entire month of May each year. In 2026\, it takes place from Friday\, 1 May to Sunday\, 31 May. The dates are fixed to the calendar month and do not vary from year to year. \nWhy Stroke Awareness Month Matters\nStroke is a medical emergency where every minute counts. According to the American Stroke Association\, someone in the United States has a stroke every 40 seconds\, and someone dies from stroke every 3.5 minutes. Globally\, the World Health Organization estimates that 15 million people suffer a stroke each year\, with 5 million left permanently disabled. Despite these figures\, many people cannot identify the warning signs of stroke or do not know that rapid treatment can dramatically improve outcomes. \nThe good news is that over 80% of strokes are preventable. High blood pressure is the single most significant controllable risk factor\, contributing to more than half of all strokes. Other modifiable risk factors include smoking\, diabetes\, high cholesterol\, obesity\, and physical inactivity. Stroke Awareness Month exists to spread this message: that awareness\, education\, and early action save lives. The campaign also highlights advances in stroke treatment\, including clot-retrieval procedures that can reverse stroke symptoms if administered within hours of onset. \nHow to Get Involved in Stroke Awareness Month\nWhether you are a healthcare professional\, a stroke survivor\, or simply someone who wants to help save lives\, there are many ways to participate: \n\nLearn the FAST signs – FAST stands for Face drooping\, Arm weakness\, Speech difficulty\, and Time to call emergency services. Memorise these signs and share them with your family and friends.\nCheck your blood pressure – High blood pressure often has no symptoms. Schedule a check-up with your GP or use a home monitor to know your numbers and discuss management with your healthcare provider.\nHost or attend a webinar – The American Stroke Association offers free stroke-focused webinars throughout May\, suitable for healthcare teams\, workplaces\, and community groups.\nWear red – Show your support by wearing red during May\, particularly on awareness event days\, to spark conversations about stroke prevention.\nShare survivor stories – If you or someone you know has experienced a stroke\, sharing that story can inspire others to take preventive action and seek timely treatment.\nOrganise a workplace wellness event – Partner with local health services to offer blood pressure screenings\, healthy eating workshops\, or physical activity challenges at your workplace.\nSupport stroke research – Donate to organisations funding stroke research\, such as the American Stroke Association or the Stroke Association (UK)\, to help advance treatments and rehabilitation.\n\nHistory of Stroke Awareness Month\nThe formal designation of May as Stroke Awareness Month in the United States traces back to a presidential proclamation. The observance gained momentum through the efforts of the American Stroke Association\, which was established in 1998 as a division of the American Heart Association to specifically address the prevention and treatment of stroke. Before this\, stroke awareness campaigns existed in various forms\, but lacked a unified national focus. \nThe introduction of the FAST acronym in the late 1990s transformed public health messaging around stroke. Originally developed by researchers in the United Kingdom in 1998\, the FAST test provided a simple\, memorable way for ordinary people to identify stroke symptoms and act quickly. The American Stroke Association adopted and promoted FAST widely\, and it has since become the global standard for stroke recognition campaigns. \nOver the decades\, Stroke Awareness Month has evolved to reflect advances in treatment. The approval of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) in 1996 gave doctors the first effective clot-dissolving drug for ischaemic stroke\, but it must be administered within hours of symptom onset. More recently\, mechanical thrombectomy procedures have extended the treatment window for certain patients. These advances make public awareness even more critical\, as outcomes depend heavily on how quickly patients reach specialist care. \nNoteworthy Facts About Stroke Awareness Month\n\nStroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States\, killing approximately 150\,000 Americans each year.\nSomeone in the United States has a stroke every 40 seconds\, and someone dies from stroke every 3.5 minutes.\nOver 80% of strokes are preventable through lifestyle changes and managing risk factors such as high blood pressure.\nThe FAST acronym (Face\, Arm\, Speech\, Time) was developed in the UK in 1998 and is now used worldwide to help people recognise stroke symptoms.\nStroke can happen at any age. About 10% of all strokes occur in people under 50.\n\nFrequently Asked Questions\nWhat is Stroke Awareness Month?\nStroke Awareness Month is a national health observance held throughout May to educate the public about stroke prevention\, warning signs\, and the importance of rapid treatment. It is led by the American Stroke Association. \nWhen is Stroke Awareness Month in 2026?\nStroke Awareness Month runs from Friday\, 1 May to Sunday\, 31 May 2026. \nWhat does FAST stand for in stroke awareness?\nFAST is an acronym used to help identify stroke symptoms: Face drooping\, Arm weakness\, Speech difficulty\, and Time to call emergency services. SUMMARY:Hepatitis Awareness Month
DESCRIPTION:Hepatitis Awareness Month is observed throughout May each year\, raising awareness about viral hepatitis\, a group of infectious diseases that affect the liver and remain a major global health challenge. The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)\, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)\, and organisations worldwide use the month to promote testing\, vaccination\, and treatment for hepatitis A\, B\, and C. With an estimated 354 million people living with chronic hepatitis B or C globally\, the month aims to reduce stigma and encourage early detection. \nWhat is Hepatitis Awareness Month?\nHepatitis Awareness Month is a public health observance dedicated to educating communities about viral hepatitis and the steps people can take to protect themselves. Viral hepatitis refers to inflammation of the liver caused by a virus\, with the most common types being hepatitis A\, hepatitis B\, and hepatitis C. Each type spreads differently and carries different risks. Hepatitis A is typically short-term and spread through contaminated food or water. Hepatitis B and C can become chronic infections\, leading to liver cirrhosis\, liver cancer\, and liver failure if left untreated. The month includes Hepatitis Testing Day on 19 May\, a focused call for people to get screened. \nWhen is Hepatitis Awareness Month?\nHepatitis Awareness Month takes place throughout the entire month of May each year. In 2026\, it runs from Friday\, 1 May to Sunday\, 31 May. The dates are fixed and do not change from year to year. Key dates within the month include Hepatitis Testing Day on 19 May. \nWhy Hepatitis Awareness Month Matters\nViral hepatitis is one of the leading causes of death worldwide\, responsible for approximately 1.3 million deaths per year according to the World Health Organization. Many of those living with chronic hepatitis B or C are unaware of their infection because the disease can remain asymptomatic for years or even decades while silently damaging the liver. In the United States\, an estimated 2.4 million people are living with hepatitis C\, and around 860\,000 have chronic hepatitis B\, yet a significant proportion remain undiagnosed. \nThe good news is that hepatitis A and B are preventable through vaccination\, and hepatitis C is now curable with direct-acting antiviral medications that achieve cure rates above 95%. The CDC recommends that all adults aged 18 and older be screened at least once for both hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Hepatitis Awareness Month exists to close the gap between what is medically possible and what is actually happening in communities: getting more people tested\, vaccinated\, and treated before the disease causes irreversible damage. \nHow to Get Involved in Hepatitis Awareness Month\nWhether you are a healthcare professional\, someone living with hepatitis\, or a concerned community member\, there are many ways to participate: \n\nGet tested – Ask your healthcare provider for hepatitis B and C screening. Testing is simple\, usually requiring only a blood test\, and is recommended at least once for all adults. Use Hepatitis Testing Day on 19 May as your prompt.\nGet vaccinated – Safe\, effective vaccines exist for hepatitis A and hepatitis B. If you have not been vaccinated\, talk to your doctor. The CDC recommends hepatitis B vaccination for all infants\, children\, and adults up to age 59\, and for adults 60 and older with risk factors.\nTalk to your doctor about treatment – If you have been diagnosed with chronic hepatitis B or C\, modern treatments are highly effective. Hepatitis C can be cured in most cases with a course of antiviral medication lasting 8 to 12 weeks.\nShare your story – If you are living with hepatitis or have been cured\, sharing your experience can help reduce stigma and encourage others to get tested and treated.\nOrganise a screening event – Healthcare providers and community organisations can partner to offer free or low-cost hepatitis screening at clinics\, community centres\, and workplaces during May.\nEducate yourself and others – Learn the differences between hepatitis A\, B\, and C\, how each is transmitted\, and how to reduce risk. Share reliable information from sources like the CDC and the Hepatitis B Foundation.\nSupport liver health charities – Donate to organisations like the Hepatitis B Foundation\, the American Liver Foundation\, or the World Hepatitis Alliance that fund research\, education\, and patient support.\n\nHistory of Hepatitis Awareness Month\nThe formal recognition of May as Hepatitis Awareness Month in the United States has been supported by federal agencies including the HHS and the CDC. The observance grew from the broader viral hepatitis elimination strategy that the US government has pursued since the early 2000s. In 2010\, the Institute of Medicine published a landmark report\, “Hepatitis and Liver Cancer: A National Strategy for Prevention and Control\,” which called for increased awareness\, screening\, and treatment. This report helped galvanise federal and state efforts to designate May as a month of focused hepatitis education. \nThe discovery and understanding of viral hepatitis has evolved over decades. Hepatitis B was identified in 1965 by Dr Baruch Blumberg\, who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1976 for his work. A hepatitis B vaccine became available in 1982\, making it one of the first vaccines to prevent a form of cancer (liver cancer). Hepatitis C was identified later\, in 1989\, by a team including Harvey Alter\, Michael Houghton\, and Charles Rice\, who shared the Nobel Prize in 2020 for their discovery. The development of direct-acting antiviral drugs in the 2010s transformed hepatitis C from a chronic\, often fatal condition into a curable disease. \nHepatitis Testing Day\, observed on 19 May\, was established in 2012 to mark the birthday of Dr Blumberg and reinforce the message that testing is the essential first step toward prevention and cure. The day has become a cornerstone of Hepatitis Awareness Month\, with free testing events held at clinics and community centres across the country. \nNoteworthy Facts About Hepatitis\n\nAn estimated 354 million people worldwide live with chronic hepatitis B or C\, according to the World Health Organization.\nViral hepatitis causes approximately 1.3 million deaths per year globally\, comparable to tuberculosis and HIV.\nHepatitis C is now curable with direct-acting antiviral medications that achieve cure rates above 95% in most patients.\nThe hepatitis B vaccine\, first available in 1982\, was the first vaccine capable of preventing a cancer (liver cancer caused by chronic hepatitis B).\nHepatitis Testing Day on 19 May honours the birthday of Dr Baruch Blumberg\, who discovered the hepatitis B virus in 1965.\n\nFrequently Asked Questions\nWhat is Hepatitis Awareness Month?\nHepatitis Awareness Month is an annual May observance that raises awareness about viral hepatitis\, promotes testing and vaccination\, and encourages treatment for hepatitis B and C. It is coordinated by federal agencies and health organisations worldwide. \nWhen is Hepatitis Awareness Month in 2026?\nHepatitis Awareness Month runs from Friday\, 1 May to Sunday\, 31 May 2026. Hepatitis Testing Day falls on Tuesday\, 19 May 2026. \nWhat is the difference between hepatitis A\, B\, and C?\nHepatitis A is usually a short-term illness spread through contaminated food or water and is preventable by vaccine. Hepatitis B spreads through blood and bodily fluids\, can become chronic\, and is also preventable by vaccine. Hepatitis C spreads primarily through blood contact\, can become chronic\, and while there is no vaccine\, it is curable with antiviral medication. \nSpread the Word\nHelp raise awareness about hepatitis by sharing this page and encouraging others to get tested and vaccinated. SUMMARY:Asthma Awareness Month
DESCRIPTION:Asthma Awareness Month is observed throughout May each year\, raising awareness about asthma\, a chronic respiratory condition that affects more than 262 million people worldwide. Since 1984\, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) has designated May as National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month\, timing it to coincide with peak spring allergy season when asthma symptoms often worsen. The month educates the public about asthma triggers\, management strategies\, and the importance of access to effective treatment. \nWhat is Asthma Awareness Month?\nAsthma Awareness Month is a global health observance dedicated to increasing understanding of asthma\, its causes\, and how it can be effectively managed. Asthma is a condition in which the airways narrow\, swell\, and may produce extra mucus\, making breathing difficult and triggering coughing\, wheezing\, and shortness of breath. The campaign is coordinated in the United States by the AAFA and the American Lung Association\, while internationally\, the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) organises World Asthma Day during May. The month aims to reduce asthma-related hospitalisations and deaths through better education and access to care. \nWhen is Asthma Awareness Month?\nAsthma Awareness Month takes place throughout the entire month of May each year. In 2027\, it runs from Saturday\, 1 May to Monday\, 31 May. The dates are fixed and do not change from year to year. World Asthma Day\, a key event within the month\, falls on Tuesday\, 4 May 2027. \nWhy Asthma Awareness Month Matters\nAsthma is one of the most common chronic conditions in the world. According to the World Health Organization\, over 262 million people were affected by asthma in 2019\, and it caused approximately 455\,000 deaths that year. In the United States alone\, more than 26 million people live with asthma\, including approximately 4.7 million children. Asthma disproportionately affects certain communities: Black Americans are three times more likely to die from asthma than white Americans\, and children living in low-income urban areas face higher rates of asthma and poorer access to specialist care. \nDespite these figures\, asthma can be well controlled with the right treatment plan. Anti-inflammatory inhalers\, the cornerstone of asthma management\, can prevent attacks and allow people with asthma to lead fully active lives. Asthma Awareness Month provides the platform to advocate for better access\, better education\, and better outcomes for everyone living with asthma. \nHow to Get Involved in Asthma Awareness Month\nWhether you live with asthma\, care for someone who does\, or simply want to help raise awareness\, there are many ways to participate: \n\nReview your asthma action plan – If you have asthma\, work with your healthcare provider to update your personalised action plan. Make sure you know your triggers\, medications\, and what to do during an attack.\nLearn to identify triggers – Common asthma triggers include pollen\, dust mites\, pet dander\, mould\, smoke\, cold air\, and exercise. Understanding your triggers is the first step to managing symptoms effectively.\nSupport World Asthma Day – On 4 May 2027\, join the global conversation by attending a local event\, participating in an online webinar\, or sharing awareness content on social media.\nCheck indoor air quality – Use the US Environmental Protection Agency’s resources to assess and improve the air quality in your home and workplace. Simple steps like using HEPA filters and reducing humidity can help.\nDonate to asthma research – Support organisations like the AAFA\, the American Lung Association\, or Asthma UK (now part of Asthma + Lung UK) that fund research into better treatments and potential cures.\nEducate children about asthma – Teach children with asthma to recognise their symptoms and use their inhalers correctly. Schools should have asthma policies that allow children to carry and use their medication.\nParticipate in the Big Asthma Bake Sale – In the UK\, the Big Asthma Bake Sale runs throughout May\, raising funds for asthma research through bake sales and community events.\n\nHistory of Asthma Awareness Month\nThe Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America first declared May as National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month in 1984. May was chosen because it coincides with the spring allergy season in the Northern Hemisphere\, when tree and grass pollen levels peak and many people with allergic asthma experience worsening symptoms. The timing maximises the relevance of the awareness campaign and ensures it reaches people when they are most likely to be thinking about respiratory health. \nThe AAFA was founded in 1953 and has been a leading advocacy organisation for people with asthma and allergies for over seven decades. Its work during May includes distributing educational materials\, hosting community events\, and advocating for policy changes that improve access to asthma care. The American Lung Association also plays a major role\, organising webinars\, producing patient resources\, and running its “Lung Force” campaign. \nInternationally\, the Global Initiative for Asthma has coordinated World Asthma Day since 1998\, with the event always falling on the first Tuesday of May. GINA was launched in 1993 in collaboration with the World Health Organization and the National Heart\, Lung\, and Blood Institute. Its annual report provides evidence-based guidelines for asthma management used by healthcare professionals worldwide. Together\, these organisations have significantly improved global understanding of asthma and reduced mortality rates in countries with access to modern treatments. \nNoteworthy Facts About Asthma\n\nOver 262 million people worldwide live with asthma\, according to the World Health Organization.\nIn the United States\, more than 26 million people have asthma\, including approximately 4.7 million children.\nAsthma accounts for approximately 1.8 million emergency department visits in the US each year.\nBlack Americans are three times more likely to die from asthma than white Americans\, highlighting significant health disparities.\nThe Global Initiative for Asthma has coordinated World Asthma Day since 1998\, raising awareness in over 35 countries.\n\nFrequently Asked Questions\nWhat is Asthma Awareness Month?\nAsthma Awareness Month is an annual May observance that raises awareness about asthma\, a chronic respiratory condition.
