SUMMARY:National Disability Independence Day
DESCRIPTION:National Disability Independence Day is observed each year on 26 July to commemorate the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990. The day marks one of the most important civil rights milestones in American history and is used to celebrate the progress made\, raise awareness of the barriers that remain\, and champion the full inclusion of people with disabilities. \nWhat is National Disability Independence Day?\nNational Disability Independence Day recognises the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act\, known as the ADA\, which was signed into law on 26 July 1990. The ADA was the world’s first comprehensive civil rights law for people with disabilities\, and the day honours both its legacy and the ongoing work to remove the barriers that disabled people still face. It is observed mainly in the United States by disability advocates\, community organisations\, employers\, and individuals. \nWhen is National Disability Independence Day?\nNational Disability Independence Day falls on Sunday\, 26 July 2026. The date is fixed\, marking the exact anniversary of the day the ADA was signed in 1990\, so it is observed on 26 July every year. \nWhy National Disability Independence Day Matters\nThe ADA transformed daily life for millions of people. It prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in employment\, requires access to places of public accommodation\, and ensures equal access to government services\, transportation\, and telecommunications. More than one in four adults in the United States lives with some form of disability\, so the protections the ADA provides reach across the whole of society. The day matters because legal rights on paper only become real when communities\, workplaces\, and public spaces are genuinely accessible\, and there is still progress to be made. \nHow to Get Involved in National Disability Independence Day\nThere are many ways to mark the day and support disability inclusion: \n\nLearn about the ADA – Read about the law\, its history\, and the activists whose campaigning made it possible\, including the disability rights protests of the late 1980s.\nCheck your accessibility – If you run a business or manage a venue\, review whether your premises\, website\, and services are genuinely accessible to disabled customers.\nAmplify disabled voices – Share work\, writing\, and stories created by people with disabilities rather than speaking on their behalf.\nSupport disability organisations – Donate to or volunteer with charities and advocacy groups that work for disability rights.\nReview your language – Learn about respectful\, person-centred language and challenge stereotypes when you encounter them.\nAttend an event – Many community groups and universities hold talks\, panels\, and celebrations around the anniversary.\nMake digital content accessible – Add alt text to images\, captions to videos\, and clear structure to documents so everyone can take part.\n\nHistory of National Disability Independence Day\nThe Americans with Disabilities Act was the result of decades of campaigning by the disability rights movement. Activists had spent years pushing for protections equal to those won through earlier civil rights legislation\, staging demonstrations and acts of civil disobedience to make their case heard. Their efforts culminated in a broad\, bipartisan coalition in Congress. \nOn 26 July 1990\, President George H. W. Bush signed the ADA into law in a ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House\, at the time the largest gathering ever held there. The act has since served as a de facto bill of rights for Americans with disabilities\, assuring their access to economic and civic life and acknowledging centuries of discrimination. \nNational Disability Independence Day grew up around the anniversary as a way to celebrate the law and keep attention on the work still to be done. Each year it provides a focal point for events\, education\, and advocacy across the country. \nNoteworthy Facts About National Disability Independence Day\n\nThe ADA was signed on 26 July 1990 by President George H. That year the Lender’s Bagels company\, long associated with bringing the bagel to a mass American market\, opened a bagel factory in Mattoon that multiple sources describe as the largest in the world. The town proudly adopted the title Bagel Capital of the World. \nTo mark the occasion\, Murray Lender\, the well known company spokesman and member of the family behind Lender’s Bagels\, held a free bagel breakfast for everyone in Mattoon. The first breakfast is believed to have taken place on 26 July\, and the celebration stuck. What started as a community breakfast grew into a festival featuring a parade\, live music\, a Miss Bagelfest contest\, and\, of course\, a great many bagels. \nNational BagelFest Day continues to honour that origin\, celebrating both the humble bagel and the community spirit of the festival that gave the day its name. \nFun Facts About National BagelFest Day\n\nNational BagelFest Day began in 1986 in Mattoon\, Illinois.\nMattoon calls itself the Bagel Capital of the World.\nThe celebration was started by Murray Lender of Lender’s Bagels with a free bagel breakfast.\nThe festival has grown to include a parade\, live music\, and a Miss Bagelfest contest.\nBagels are traditionally boiled before baking\, which gives them their distinctive chewy texture.\n\nWhy National BagelFest Day Matters\nThe day celebrates a much loved food and the sense of community that food can create. SUMMARY:Auntie's Day
DESCRIPTION:Auntie’s Day takes place on Sunday\, 26 July 2026\, falling on the fourth Sunday of July each year. It is a celebration of aunts\, godmothers\, and all the women who play a nurturing role in a child’s life. The day was created in the United States to recognise the unique bond between aunts and the children they love and support. \nWhat is Auntie’s Day?\nAuntie’s Day is an annual celebration honouring aunts of every kind: aunts by relation\, aunts by choice\, godmothers\, and the many women who help raise and guide children without being their mothers. It was founded in 2009 by lifestyle author and entrepreneur Melanie Notkin\, creator of the Savvy Auntie community. The day shines a light on the often overlooked but deeply important contribution aunts make to families. It is especially meaningful to women Notkin describes as PANKs\, or Professional Aunts No Kids\, who pour love and care into the children in their lives. \nWhen is Auntie’s Day?\nAuntie’s Day falls on the fourth Sunday of July every year. In 2026 it is celebrated on Sunday\, 26 July 2026. Because it is tied to a particular Sunday rather than a fixed calendar date\, the day shifts slightly from year to year. The table below shows the dates for the next five years so you can plan ahead. \n\n\n\nYear\nDate\n\n\n\n\n2026\nSunday\, 26 July\n\n\n2027\nSunday\, 25 July\n\n\n2028\nSunday\, 23 July\n\n\n2029\nSunday\, 22 July\n\n\n2030\nSunday\, 28 July\n\n\n\nWhy Auntie’s Day Matters\nAunts occupy a special place in family life. They are often confidantes\, mentors\, and a source of fun and stability\, offering children a trusted adult who is neither a parent nor a peer. For many young people\, an aunt is the person they turn to when they cannot talk to their parents\, and that role can shape a child’s confidence and sense of belonging for life. \nThe day also recognises a growing demographic that is frequently left out of family celebrations. Melanie Notkin coined the term PANK\, Professional Aunt No Kids\, in 2008 to describe women who are childless by circumstance\, by chance\, or by choice\, yet remain deeply invested in the children around them. Research commissioned through the Savvy Auntie community has suggested that aunts in the United States collectively spend billions of dollars a year on the children in their lives\, from school supplies and clothing to holidays and treats. Auntie’s Day gives families a moment to acknowledge that emotional and practical generosity\, which often goes unmarked by traditional occasions such as Mother’s Day. \nHow to Get Involved in Auntie’s Day\nThere are countless ways to show an aunt how much she means to you\, whether she lives nearby or on the other side of the world. \n\nSpend quality time together – Plan a day around something she loves\, such as a walk\, a film\, or a long lunch. Undivided attention is often the most meaningful gift of all.\nSend a heartfelt note – A handwritten card or letter telling your aunt exactly why she matters to you can mean far more than anything bought in a shop.\nGive a thoughtful\, personal gift – A framed photograph\, a book she has mentioned wanting\, or a small handmade item shows you have paid attention to her tastes.\nMake a phone or video call – For aunts who live far away\, a face-to-face video chat or a long phone call helps close the distance and lets you catch up properly.\nLook through old photographs together – Bring out family albums and ask her to share the stories behind the pictures. It is a lovely way to preserve family history.\nCook or share a meal – Invite her round for a home-cooked dinner\, or take her out somewhere she enjoys\, and let the conversation flow.\nCelebrate the aunt figures in your wider circle – Remember godmothers\, family friends\, and the chosen aunts who are not related by blood but who care deeply for your children.\nShare the love online – Post a photo and a few kind words about your aunt using the official hashtags to help others discover and join the celebration.\n\nHistory of Auntie’s Day\nAuntie’s Day grew out of Savvy Auntie\, an online community founded in 2007 by Melanie Notkin. Notkin\, a New York based author and lifestyle expert\, set out to celebrate modern aunthood after noticing that aunts\, godmothers\, and women without children of their own had no day of their own in the calendar. Savvy Auntie quickly attracted a large following of women who identified with the idea of being a loving\, involved auntie. \nIn 2009\, Notkin established the first Auntie’s Day\, choosing the fourth Sunday of July so that it would sit comfortably in the summer\, a season often associated with family time and holidays. The choice of a Sunday made it easy for families to gather and celebrate. From the outset\, the day was designed to be inclusive\, honouring not only aunts by blood but also aunts by choice and the women who step into aunt-like roles for friends’ children. \nSince its launch\, Auntie’s Day has been marked each year through the Savvy Auntie community and has gradually been picked up by greeting card makers\, gift retailers\, and media outlets in the United States and beyond. The related observance National Aunt and Uncle Day is also marked around the same date\, broadening the recognition of extended family members. Over more than a decade\, Auntie’s Day has helped reframe the cultural conversation around women who care for children\, whether or not they are parents themselves. \nNoteworthy Facts About Auntie’s Day\n\nAuntie’s Day was founded in 2009 by Melanie Notkin\, author and creator of the Savvy Auntie community.\nThe day always falls on the fourth Sunday of July\, which means its calendar date changes from year to year.\nNotkin coined the term PANK\, Professional Aunt No Kids\, in 2008 to describe involved aunts without children of their own.\nThe celebration deliberately includes godmothers and aunts by choice\, not just aunts related by blood.\nThe closely linked National Aunt and Uncle Day is observed on the same weekend\, recognising both sides of extended family.\n\nFrequently Asked Questions\nWhat is Auntie’s Day?\nAuntie’s Day is an annual celebration honouring aunts\, godmothers\, and all women who play a loving\, supportive role in a child’s life. SUMMARY:National All or Nothing Day
DESCRIPTION:National All or Nothing Day takes place every year on 26 July. It is a light-hearted motivational observance that encourages people to commit fully to a goal\, dream or task rather than holding back. The idea is simple: pick something you have been putting off and give it everything you have\, with no half measures. \nHow to Celebrate National All or Nothing Day\nThis is a day built around action\, so the best way to mark it is to actually do something bold. Here are eight ways to throw yourself into the spirit of the day. \n\nTackle the goal you keep postponing – Choose one project or ambition you have been circling for months and commit a full day to it. Momentum is often the hardest part\, and giving yourself permission to go all in can break the deadlock.\nHave the conversation you have been avoiding – Whether it is asking for a pay rise\, mending a friendship or saying how you really feel\, use the day as your prompt to speak up rather than sit on it.\nTry something outside your comfort zone – Sign up for a class\, audition\, race or pitch you would normally talk yourself out of. The point is to act before doubt creeps in.\nDeclutter with no exceptions – Pick a room\, a wardrobe or an inbox and clear it completely in one go. An all or nothing approach to tidying often works better than chipping away at it.\nCommit to a personal challenge – Set a 30-day fitness\, reading or savings challenge and start it today so the date is easy to remember.\nFinish something half-done – Everyone has an unfinished book\, half-painted fence or abandoned hobby. Use the day to complete it rather than start something new.\nMake a decision you have been delaying – Big choices about jobs\, moves or relationships can drift for ages. Give yourself a deadline of today and decide.\nEncourage someone else to go for it – Share the day with a friend who has been hesitating over a dream and cheer them on. Accountability makes bold action far more likely.\n\nWhat is National All or Nothing Day?\nNational All or Nothing Day is an informal motivational observance that celebrates wholehearted commitment. It is aimed at anyone who tends to hold back\, hedge their bets or leave goals half-finished. The phrase “all or nothing” describes a mindset of full effort with no reservations\, and the day repurposes that idea as gentle encouragement to be bolder. It is not tied to any charity or official body\, which means people are free to interpret it however suits their own ambitions. \nWhen is National All or Nothing Day?\nNational All or Nothing Day falls on Sunday\, 26 July 2026. It is observed on the same date every year\, so it never moves\, making it easy to plan around. A Sunday date in 2026 gives many people a free day to actually act on whatever goal they choose. \nThe History of National All or Nothing Day\nThe precise origins of National All or Nothing Day are unclear\, and no single founder has ever claimed credit for it. Like many modern observances\, it appears to have grown organically through awareness-day calendars and social media rather than being launched by a specific organisation or campaign. \nWhat is better documented is the phrase itself. “All or nothing” has been part of the English language for centuries and carries connotations of high stakes and total commitment. The expression has long been associated with gambling and risk-taking\, where a bet might win everything or lose everything. Over time the phrase shifted into everyday motivational language\, describing the choice to pursue something with complete dedication rather than partial effort. \nThe day has gained traction in recent years as motivational and self-improvement content has flourished online. It now sits comfortably alongside the many quirky and uplifting observances that fill the summer calendar\, offering a simple\, memorable prompt to stop hesitating and start doing. \nFun Facts About National All or Nothing Day\n\nThe day is always observed on 26 July\, placing it in the middle of summer when many people have more free time to act on personal goals.\nThe expression “all or nothing” has historically been linked to gambling\, where a wager could mean winning everything or losing it all.\nIt is one of several motivational observances on the calendar\, joining days devoted to courage\, confidence and personal growth.\nThere is no official organiser\, so the day belongs entirely to the people who choose to celebrate it.\nThe phrase has lent its name to films\, songs and albums\, underlining how deeply it is woven into popular culture.\nBecause it has no fixed rules\, the day can be applied to anything from fitness and finances to relationships and creative projects.\n\nWhy National All or Nothing Day Matters\nHesitation and procrastination hold a lot of people back from goals that genuinely matter to them. A dedicated day to commit fully\, even symbolically\, can be the nudge someone needs to finally act. If you enjoy days that encourage you to be braver\, you might also like National Anti-Boredom Month\, which runs through July and champions making the most of your time. \nFrequently Asked Questions\nWhat is National All or Nothing Day?\nIt is an informal motivational observance encouraging people to commit fully to a goal\, dream or task rather than holding back. It was created by the restaurant chain Raising Cane’s\, which marks the occasion every year by giving away free chicken fingers to customers. \nHow to Celebrate National Chicken Finger Day\nThis is a day built around eating\, sharing\, and enjoying one of the most popular comfort foods around. Here are plenty of ways to take part: \n\nClaim a free chicken finger from Raising Cane’s – In recent years\, customers who buy a Box Combo on the day receive a free chicken finger\, with no code or coupon required. Check the chain’s website and social channels for the current year’s offer before you go.\nHost a chicken finger taste test – Gather samples from a few different restaurants and rate them on crunch\, juiciness\, and flavour. It is a fun\, low-cost way to settle the great debate over who makes the best tender.\nMake them from scratch at home – Coat strips of chicken breast in seasoned flour\, dip them in egg\, roll them in breadcrumbs or crushed cornflakes\, and fry or bake until golden. Homemade versions let you control the seasoning and the crunch.\nExperiment with dipping sauces – Half the joy of a chicken finger is the dip. Try honey mustard\, barbecue\, ranch\, buffalo\, or a copycat of Cane’s famous secret sauce and see which wins at your table.\nShare a box with friends or colleagues – Order a big platter for the office or for a get-together. Chicken fingers travel well and are easy crowd-pleasers for groups of all ages.\nPost your plate on social media – Snap a photo of your perfectly golden fingers and join the conversation online. The day generates plenty of buzz across food-loving accounts.\nTry a healthier spin – Air-fried or oven-baked chicken fingers deliver much of the crunch with less oil\, and you can pair them with a fresh salad or vegetable sticks for balance.\nSupport a local restaurant – Many independent diners and chicken specialists run their own promotions on the day. Seek out a neighbourhood spot rather than only the big chains.\n\nWhat is National Chicken Finger Day?\nNational Chicken Finger Day is an annual American food holiday dedicated to the chicken finger\, also known as the chicken tender or chicken strip. It is a trademarked celebration created and championed by Raising Cane’s\, the Louisiana-founded chain that built its entire menu around the chicken finger. The day is embraced both by the brand’s devoted fan base\, known as Caniacs\, and by chicken lovers more broadly\, with rival chains and home cooks joining in. It is a light-hearted occasion focused on enjoying good food and sharing it with others. \nWhen is National Chicken Finger Day?\nNational Chicken Finger Day is observed every year on 27 July. In 2026 it falls on a Monday. The date is fixed\, so it lands on the same day of the month each year regardless of the day of the week. \nThe History of National Chicken Finger Day\nThe chicken finger itself has a longer story than the holiday. Strips of breaded\, fried chicken breast rose to popularity in American restaurants and diners through the latter half of the twentieth century\, prized for being quick to cook\, easy to eat by hand\, and endlessly adaptable to different sauces. They became a staple of children’s menus and fast-food counters alike\, and over time grew into a genuine cult favourite for adults too. \nNational Chicken Finger Day was created in 2010 by Todd Graves\, the founder of Raising Cane’s\, as a way to honour what the chain calls the most valuable player of its menu. Graves opened the first Raising Cane’s in Baton Rouge\, Louisiana\, in 1996\, having been told by a business professor that a restaurant serving only chicken fingers would never succeed. The chain’s rapid growth proved otherwise\, and the holiday became a natural extension of that single-minded devotion to one product. \nThe celebration was elevated to full trademark status in 2019\, cementing Raising Cane’s ownership of the day. Since its launch\, the brand has given away well over 150\,000 free chicken fingers to mark the occasion\, turning what began as an in-house promotion into a date that food fans across the country now look forward to each July. If you enjoy food holidays like this\, you might also like National Fried Chicken Day\, which celebrates the broader world of crispy fried poultry. \nFun Facts About National Chicken Finger Day\n\nThe holiday was created in 2010 and trademarked by Raising Cane’s in 2019.\nRaising Cane’s was founded in 1996 in Baton Rouge\, Louisiana\, and named after the founder’s dog\, Cane.\nTo date\, the chain has given away more than 150\,000 free chicken fingers on the holiday.\nLoyal Raising Cane’s fans are affectionately known as Caniacs.\nOther chains including Zaxby’s\, Slim Chickens\, Guthrie’s\, and KFC have used the day to spotlight their own versions of the chicken strip.\nThe terms chicken finger\, chicken tender\, and chicken strip are often used interchangeably\, though purists argue tenders are made from a specific cut of the breast.\n\nWhy National Chicken Finger Day Matters\nFood holidays like this one bring people together over something simple and joyful. SUMMARY:National New Jersey Day
DESCRIPTION:National New Jersey Day takes place on Monday\, 27 July 2026\, celebrating the third state to join the United States. Part of the National Day Calendar series honouring all fifty states in the order they ratified the Constitution\, the day recognises New Jersey’s outsized contribution to American history\, industry\, food and culture\, from the boardwalks of the Jersey Shore to the laboratories where Thomas Edison reshaped the modern world. \nThe Story Behind National New Jersey Day\nNational New Jersey Day belongs to the National State Days project\, a long-running effort to give each of the fifty states its own day of recognition. The state observances were founded by Marlo Anderson\, the entrepreneur behind National Day Calendar\, who created National New Jersey Day in 2009 on the recommendation of officials connected to the state. In 2017\, National Day Calendar formally launched the wider State Days project\, assigning each state a date and celebrating them in the chronological order they entered the Union. \nNew Jersey’s own moment in that history came on 18 December 1787\, when it became the third state to ratify the United States Constitution\, following Delaware and Pennsylvania. It later earned another distinction by being the first state to ratify the Bill of Rights on 20 November 1789. The 27 July date used for the modern awareness day is not the anniversary of statehood itself but a calendar slot chosen to space the state celebrations across the year\, which is why the observance sits in high summer rather than mid-December. \nThe state’s roots run far deeper than 1787. Its first inhabitants were the Lenape\, part of the Delaware tribe of the Algonquian-speaking peoples\, with an estimated 8\,000 living in the region when Europeans arrived. The first permanent European settlement was established by the Dutch at Bergen\, now part of Jersey City\, in 1660. English forces took control in 1664\, and King Charles II granted the territory to his brother James\, the Duke of York. The land was named New Jersey after Sir George Carteret\, who had served as governor of Jersey\, an island in the English Channel. \nBy the time of the Revolutionary War\, New Jersey’s central position among the thirteen colonies made it a crossroads of conflict. More battles were fought on its soil than in any other state\, earning it the nickname the “Crossroads of the American Revolution.” In the centuries that followed\, the state reinvented itself again as an industrial powerhouse\, with Paterson emerging as a centre of textile\, locomotive and silk production as early as the 1790s. \nWhen and Where is National New Jersey Day Celebrated?\nNational New Jersey Day falls on Monday\, 27 July 2026. It is observed annually on 27 July across the United States\, with celebrations naturally concentrated in New Jersey itself and among the wider community of people with ties to the Garden State. Towns along the shore\, historic sites\, local restaurants and museums often use the occasion to highlight regional heritage and produce. \nTraditions and Customs\nBecause this is a celebration of place rather than a single ritual\, its customs reflect the things New Jersey is best known for: \n\nEating like a local – Pork roll\, sometimes called Taylor ham depending on which part of the state you are in\, is a defining breakfast staple\, while New Jersey’s pizza and diner culture are central to any food-focused celebration.\nHeading to the boardwalk – The world’s first boardwalk opened in Atlantic City in 1870 to keep sand out of hotel lobbies\, and the shore’s boardwalks remain the heart of summer leisure in the state.\nVisiting a diner – New Jersey is widely regarded as the diner capital of the world\, with several hundred in operation\, and a meal at a classic stainless-steel diner is a fitting way to mark the day.\nExploring Revolutionary history – Battlefields and historic sites across the state invite visitors to retrace the conflicts that earned New Jersey its crossroads reputation.\nCelebrating local produce – As the Garden State\, New Jersey is known for blueberries\, cranberries\, tomatoes and sweetcorn\, and farmers’ markets in late July are in full swing.\n\nWays to Celebrate National New Jersey Day\nThere are countless ways to take part\, whether you live in the state or simply want to learn more about it: \n\nCook a Jersey breakfast – Try a pork roll\, egg and cheese sandwich\, the unofficial state breakfast\, and judge for yourself whether you side with “pork roll” or “Taylor ham.”\nPlan a day trip to the shore – Walk a boardwalk\, ride a vintage carousel or simply enjoy the Atlantic coastline that has drawn holidaymakers for over 150 years.\nRead up on Thomas Edison – Visit or learn about Menlo Park\, where Edison earned his nickname the “Wizard of Menlo Park” and developed inventions that changed daily life.\nSupport a local diner or pizzeria – Choose an independent New Jersey eatery and sample the food culture the state is famous for.\nBuy Garden State produce – Pick up Jersey blueberries or tomatoes at a farmers’ market and taste why agriculture shaped the state’s identity.\nShare the state’s history online – Post a fact about New Jersey’s role in the Revolution or its long list of inventions to spread awareness.\n\nFacts and Figures\n\nNew Jersey became the third state to ratify the United States Constitution on 18 December 1787\, and the first to ratify the Bill of Rights on 20 November 1789.\nThe world’s first boardwalk was built in Atlantic City in 1870; it began as roughly a mile long and grew into one of the longest in the world.\nMore Revolutionary War battles were fought in New Jersey than in any other state\, giving it the nickname the “Crossroads of the American Revolution.”\nRoughly half of Thomas Edison’s 1\,093 patents were based on work at his New Jersey laboratories\, including the phonograph and the practical incandescent light bulb.\nGrover Cleveland\, born in Caldwell in 1837\, is the only United States president to have been born in New Jersey.\nNew Jersey is credited as the birthplace of inventions and products including Bubble Wrap\, the Band-Aid\, the ice cream cone and the first cultivated blueberry.\n\nFrequently Asked Questions\nWhat is National New Jersey Day?\nNational New Jersey Day is an annual observance celebrating the history\, culture and contributions of New Jersey\, the third state to join the Union. It is part of National Day Calendar’s State Days series\, which honours every US state in turn. \nWhen is National New Jersey Day in 2026?\nNational New Jersey Day is on Monday\, 27 July 2026. It is marked on 27 July every year. \nWhy is National New Jersey Day on 27 July and not the statehood anniversary?\nNew Jersey officially became a state on 18 December 1787\, but National Day Calendar assigned each state observance a separate date to spread the fifty celebrations across the year. The 27 July date is a calendar slot rather than the statehood anniversary itself. \nSpread the Word\nShare National New Jersey Day with your community using #NationalNewJerseyDay and #NationalNewJerseyDay2026. SUMMARY:Gary Gygax Day
DESCRIPTION:Gary Gygax Day is observed on Monday\, 27 July 2026\, the birthday of Ernest Gary Gygax\, the American game designer who co-created Dungeons & Dragons. The day honours the man widely regarded as the father of the modern tabletop role-playing game and the hobby he helped bring to millions of players around the world. \nThe Story Behind Gary Gygax Day\nErnest Gary Gygax was born on 27 July 1938 and grew up with a love of games\, fantasy fiction and the world of tabletop wargaming. In 1968 he rented the Horticultural Hall in his home town of Lake Geneva\, Wisconsin\, to host a gathering he called the Lake Geneva Wargames Convention. That event\, later shortened to Gen Con\, drew close to one hundred attendees and grew into the largest tabletop gaming convention in North America. \nIn 1971 Gygax co-developed Chainmail\, a medieval miniatures wargame\, with Jeff Perren. Working with fellow gamer Dave Arneson\, he then took a bold step away from historical battlefields towards an imagined fantasy setting\, where players controlled individual characters rather than armies. After publishers turned the idea down\, Gygax founded his own company\, Tactical Studies Rules (TSR)\, with an investment from his childhood friend Don Kaye. In 1974\, TSR published Dungeons & Dragons\, the game that would define an entire genre. \nDungeons & Dragons transformed gaming. At its peak in the early 1980s\, TSR employed around 400 people in Lake Geneva\, a town of fewer than 6\,000 residents at the time\, drawing in writers\, artists and editors. The company went on to publish hundreds of novels alongside its games. In 1985\, however\, Gygax was forced out of the company he had built as sales slipped and shareholders voted to replace him. He continued to design games until his death in March 2008 at the age of 69. \nAfter he died\, fans declared his birthday\, 27 July\, to be Gary Gygax Day\, sometimes also called Dungeons & Dragons Day. In 2023 his home town of Lake Geneva officially recognised the date as Gary Gygax Day\, at the initiative of the Gygax Memorial Fund\, cementing his legacy in the place where it all began. \nWhen and Where is Gary Gygax Day Celebrated?\nGary Gygax Day falls on 27 July each year\, the date of Gygax’s birth in 1938. In 2026 it lands on a Monday. The date is fixed\, so it is marked on the same day every year. Both founders were survivors of domestic abuse who had escaped harmful\, controlling relationships and wanted to turn their experiences into something that could help others. \nThe date of 27 July was chosen because it commemorates the day the network’s founder gained her freedom\, leaving behind a long and abusive relationship to begin a new\, independent life free from fear. By anchoring the observance to that personal milestone\, the founders turned a private turning point into a public symbol of hope\, reminding others that escape and recovery are possible. \nSince its creation\, the day has grown into an annual awareness moment promoted by relationship and survivor advocates\, community groups\, and individuals who share its message online. Its core aim has remained consistent: to teach that love should be expressed through kindness\, support\, and respect\, and never through violence or control. \nNoteworthy Facts About National Love is Kind Day\n\nThe day was founded in 2018 by survivors of domestic abuse through the Love is Kind Network.\nThe 27 July date marks the anniversary of the founder breaking free from an abusive relationship.\nWomen aged 18 to 24 experience some of the highest rates of intimate partner abuse in the United States.\nDomestic abuse is not only physical: emotional\, psychological\, financial\, and coercive control are recognised forms of harm.\nThe day deliberately combines awareness with celebration\, honouring survivors rather than focusing on harm alone.\n\nFrequently Asked Questions\nWhat is National Love is Kind Day?\nNational Love is Kind Day is an annual awareness day that promotes healthy\, respectful relationships and raises awareness of domestic abuse. Burnt-cream desserts appear in the culinary records of France\, Spain\, and England as far back as the 15th century\, and historians still debate which country can claim the original. Custard itself was a popular dish throughout the Middle Ages. \nThe first printed recipe widely associated with crème brûlée appears in the French cookbook Le Cuisinier Royal et Bourgeois\, published by François Massialot in 1691. England has its own strong claim through the burnt cream served at Trinity College\, Cambridge\, which gives the dessert its alternative names of Cambridge burnt cream and Trinity cream. Across the Channel\, the French name\, meaning simply burnt cream\, became the version most of the world now recognises. \nThe dessert has enjoyed some notable champions over the years. Records suggest President Thomas Jefferson served it to guests at the White House\, and in the modern era the Italian restaurateur Sirio Maccioni is widely credited with popularising crème brûlée internationally after putting it on the menu at his Manhattan restaurant Le Cirque. The dessert’s enduring appeal eventually earned it a dedicated day on the food calendar. \nFun Facts About National Crème Brûlée Day\n\nCrème brûlée goes by several names\, including burnt cream\, Cambridge burnt cream\, and Trinity cream.\nThe first widely cited printed recipe dates to 1691 in François Massialot’s French cookbook.\nThomas Jefferson is said to have served the dessert to White House guests.\nRestaurateur Sirio Maccioni helped popularise it worldwide through New York’s Le Cirque.\nFrance\, Spain\, and England all have competing claims to inventing the burnt-cream dessert.\nThe signature crackling top is created by caramelising sugar with intense heat\, traditionally with a hot iron and today most often with a blowtorch.\n\nWhy National Crème Brûlée Day Matters\nThe day is a celebration of craft and pleasure as much as flavour. SUMMARY:National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day
DESCRIPTION:National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day is a United States commemorative observance held each year on 27 July\, which in 2026 falls on a Monday. It marks the signing of the Korean Armistice Agreement on 27 July 1953\, the accord that brought an end to three years of active fighting in the Korean War. The day honours the American service members who fought in that conflict\, remembers those who were killed\, wounded or never returned\, and recognises the veterans who carried the war home with them. On this date the flag of the United States is flown at half-staff\, and ceremonies are held at memorials and cemeteries across the country to reflect on a war that is too often described as forgotten. \nThe Story Behind National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day\nThe Korean War began in June 1950 when forces from the north crossed the 38th parallel into the south. Over the next three years\, troops from the United States and a coalition of United Nations nations fought alongside South Korean forces in a conflict marked by harsh winters\, mountainous terrain and heavy casualties. By the time the guns fell silent\, the war had cost the lives of more than 36\,000 American service members and left many thousands more wounded\, captured or missing. \nThe fighting ended not with a peace treaty but with an armistice. After two years of difficult negotiations\, the Korean Armistice Agreement was signed at Panmunjom at 10am on 27 July 1953. The agreement established a ceasefire and a demilitarised zone roughly along the front line\, but it did not formally conclude the war. In a technical sense the two Koreas remain at war to this day\, which gives the armistice an unusual and enduring significance. \nFor many years there was no official national day in the United States dedicated to the men and women who served in Korea. That changed with Public Law 105-225\, signed in 1998\, which placed the observance into United States law under Title 36 of the United States Code. The law designates 27 July each year as National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day and requests that the President issue an annual proclamation calling on the nation to mark the day with appropriate ceremonies and activities. \nThe observance also asks that the United States flag be flown at half-staff on 27 July in honour of those who gave their lives. During the 50th anniversary years\, from 2000 to 2003\, the half-staff display was treated as a formal requirement for federal buildings\, and it has remained a central custom of the day ever since. The recognition arrived around the same time that the nation gave the war a permanent physical memorial\, helping to move the Korean War from the margins of public memory toward the recognition its veterans had long deserved. \nWhen and Where is It Observed?\nNational Korean War Veterans Armistice Day is observed every year on 27 July. The date is fixed and does not move\, because it marks the exact anniversary of the 1953 armistice signing. In 2026 the day falls on Monday 27 July. \nThe observance is specific to the United States\, where it is recognised in federal law. Ceremonies are most prominent in Washington\, D.C.\, where wreaths are laid at the Korean War Veterans Memorial on the National Mall\, a site dedicated on 27 July 1995\, the 42nd anniversary of the armistice. Observances also take place at Arlington National Cemetery and at war memorials\, veterans halls and state capitols throughout the country. South Korea and other nations that contributed troops to the United Nations coalition hold their own remembrance events on the same date\, reflecting the international character of the war. \nTraditions and Customs\n\nFlying the United States flag at half-staff from sunrise until sunset on 27 July in memory of those who died in the Korean War.\nHolding wreath-laying ceremonies at the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington\, D.C. and at local war memorials.\nThe President issuing an annual proclamation calling on the nation to observe the day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.\nObserving a moment of silence at 10am\, marking the hour at which the armistice was signed in 1953.\nInviting Korean War veterans to attend commemorative services where their service is publicly recognised and honoured.\n\nWays to Observe National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day\n\nLower a flag you own to half-staff for the day\, following the correct protocol of raising it briskly to the top first.\nAttend a local commemoration or wreath-laying ceremony and pay your respects in person.\nSpeak with a Korean War veteran in your family or community and listen to their account of the conflict.\nVisit a Korean War memorial or a national cemetery to reflect quietly on the cost of the war.\nRead about the history of the war and the armistice to understand why the conflict is sometimes called the Forgotten War.\nSupport a veterans charity or volunteer with an organisation that assists ageing veterans and their families.\n\nFacts and Figures\n\nThe Korean Armistice Agreement was signed at 10am on 27 July 1953 at Panmunjom in the demilitarised zone.\nMore than 36\,000 American service members died during the Korean War\, with many thousands more wounded or missing.\nThe observance was written into United States law by Public Law 105-225 in 1998.\nThe Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington\, D.C. was dedicated on 27 July 1995\, exactly 42 years after the armistice.\nBecause the war ended in an armistice rather than a peace treaty\, North and South Korea technically remain at war.\n\nFrequently Asked Questions\nIs National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day a federal holiday? No. It is a national observance recognised in United States law\, but it is not a public holiday\, so government offices\, schools and businesses remain open on 27 July. \nWhy is the flag flown at half-staff on this day?The flag is lowered to half-staff to honour the American service members who died in the Korean War\, in keeping with the request set out in the law that established the observance. \nWhat is the difference between an armistice and a peace treaty? An armistice is an agreement to stop fighting\, while a peace treaty formally ends a state of war. Korea has an armistice but no peace treaty\, which is why the conflict has never officially concluded. \nSpread the Word\nHelp others remember the service and sacrifice of Korean War veterans by sharing the day on social media. Use the hashtags #KoreanWarVeteransArmisticeDay\, #KoreanWarVeterans2026\, #ForgottenWar and #HonourTheFallen to encourage others to pause and reflect on 27 July. \nRelated Awareness Days\n\nVeterans Day\nNational Atomic Veterans Day\nVictory In Japan Day\n\nLinks\n\n36 U.S. Code 127: National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day\nMore awareness days on awarenessdays.com\n\nGet the 2026 ToolkitEvery awareness day in 2026 — spreadsheet\, PDF calendars\, iCal feed and unlimited reading. SUMMARY:Buffalo Soldiers Day
DESCRIPTION:Buffalo Soldiers Day is observed in the United States every year on 28 July. The day commemorates the all-Black regiments of the United States Army\, established by an Act of Congress in 1866\, and recognises their service\, discipline\, and lasting contribution to American history. In 2026\, Buffalo Soldiers Day falls on Tuesday\, 28 July. \nThe Story Behind Buffalo Soldiers Day\nThe story begins in the aftermath of the American Civil War. More than 180\,000 Black Americans had fought to preserve the Union between 1861 and 1865\, and their service made it impossible to ignore the question of whether African American men would have a permanent place in the peacetime army. On 28 July 1866\, Congress passed the Army Reorganization Act\, which created six regular Army regiments composed of Black enlisted soldiers. It was the first time in the nation’s history that Black men became a permanent part of the regular United States military. \nThe six original regiments were soon consolidated into four: the 9th and 10th Cavalry\, and the 24th and 25th Infantry. These units were stationed largely across the American West\, where they were sent to build forts\, protect settlers and railroad crews\, map unexplored territory\, string telegraph lines\, and serve in the long campaigns of the Indian Wars. The nickname “Buffalo Soldiers” is widely believed to have been given by Native American tribes\, who are said to have likened the soldiers’ courage\, tenacity\, and appearance to that of the buffalo. The men adopted the name with pride\, and the 10th Cavalry incorporated a buffalo into its regimental crest. \nThe commemorative day itself came much later. In 1992\, President George H. W. Bush issued a proclamation designating 28 July as National Buffalo Soldiers Day\, honouring the regiments’ outstanding legacy of service. The date was chosen deliberately to mark the anniversary of the 1866 legislation that brought the regiments into being. Since then\, museums\, military bases\, veterans’ groups\, and re-enactment organisations have used the day to keep the memory of these soldiers alive and to ensure their place in history is properly understood. \nWhen and Where is Buffalo Soldiers Day Celebrated?\nBuffalo Soldiers Day is observed annually on 28 July\, a fixed date that does not change from year to year. In 2026 it falls on a Tuesday. The day is primarily marked in the United States\, where the legacy of the regiments is strongest\, with commemorations at military installations\, the National Museum of the United States Army\, the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum in Houston\, and numerous regional museums and veterans’ organisations. Events range from formal military ceremonies to living-history demonstrations by mounted re-enactment troops. \nTraditions and Customs\nThe day is marked in a variety of ways\, blending solemn remembrance with public education. \n\nMilitary ceremonies – Army bases and human resources commands across the country hold formal observances\, often reading President Bush’s 1992 proclamation aloud and honouring the discipline of the original regiments.\nLiving-history re-enactments – Mounted re-enactment groups appear in period cavalry uniforms\, demonstrating drills and horsemanship to bring the era to life for visitors.\nMuseum programmes – Institutions such as the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum in Houston host special exhibitions\, talks\, and family activities centred on the regiments’ history.\nWreath-laying and graveside honours – Veterans’ groups visit the resting places of Buffalo Soldiers\, including graves at Arlington National Cemetery\, to pay their respects.\nEducational outreach – Schools\, libraries\, and community groups use the day to teach the often-overlooked role of Black soldiers in the settlement of the American West and the protection of the early national parks.\n\nWays to Celebrate Buffalo Soldiers Day\nThere are many ways to mark the occasion\, whether you have a personal connection to military history or are learning about the regiments for the first time. \n\nVisit a dedicated museum – The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum in Houston is the only museum in the United States devoted primarily to preserving the legacy of the African American soldier.\nRead about the key figures – Learn the stories of pioneers such as Henry Ossian Flipper\, the first Black graduate of West Point\, and Colonel Charles Young\, the first African American to serve as a national park superintendent.\nAttend a re-enactment – Many regional events feature mounted cavalry demonstrations that vividly recreate the soldiers’ daily life and training.\nExplore the national parks connection – The regiments acted as some of the earliest stewards of Yosemite and Sequoia\, effectively serving as forerunners of the modern park ranger.\nShare their story online – Use the day to highlight a piece of history that is too often left out of mainstream accounts\, helping new audiences understand the regiments’ contribution.\nSupport a veterans’ charity – Honour the spirit of service by donating to or volunteering with an organisation that supports military veterans and their families.\n\nIf you are interested in days that recognise the achievements and history of Black communities\, you may also wish to mark Black Leaders Awareness Day\, which falls earlier in July and celebrates leadership and excellence. \nFacts and Figures\n\nThe six Buffalo Soldier regiments were established by the Army Reorganization Act\, signed into law on 28 July 1866.\nThe 9th and 10th Cavalry became two of the most highly decorated units in American military history\, with many soldiers awarded the Medal of Honor.\nThe regiments recorded some of the lowest desertion and court-martial rates in the entire Army of their era.\nHenry Ossian Flipper\, born into slavery in 1856\, became the first Black graduate of West Point in 1877 and was assigned to the 10th Cavalry.\nColonel Charles Young\, who served with the 9th and 10th Cavalry\, became the first African American to reach the rank of colonel and the first to serve as a national park superintendent.\nNational Buffalo Soldiers Day was formally proclaimed by President George H. Versions of the sport date back more than 2\,000 years\, with an early form played in China during the 3rd millennium BC\, where competitors kicked a ball made from leather and feathers. The modern game took shape in 1863\, when the first football association was formed in London. That body standardised the rules\, banned the use of hands\, and set out the dimensions and weight of the ball\, laying the foundations for the sport we recognise today. \nNational Soccer Day itself is widely reported to have started in 1994\, established to show appreciation for and pay respect to the players\, coaches\, and fans of the sport. That year was a landmark one for American soccer\, as the United States hosted the FIFA World Cup for the first time\, sparking a surge of interest that helped lay the groundwork for professional leagues and a growing fanbase. Some sources point to a later renewed prominence around 2016\, but the 28 July date has remained the focal point for celebrating the game in the US. \nSince then\, soccer has grown steadily in America. Major League Soccer launched in 1996\, women’s soccer has gone from strength to strength on the back of repeated World Cup success\, and youth participation has soared. National Soccer Day has ridden that wave of enthusiasm\, becoming an annual fixture for clubs\, schools\, and supporters keen to champion the sport. \nFun Facts About National Soccer Day\n\nSoccer is played by more than 250 million people across over 200 countries\, making it the most popular sport on the planet.\nThe first official football association was founded in London in 1863\, the same body that banned handling the ball outfield.\nSoccer is the fourth most popular sport in the US\, behind American football\, basketball\, and baseball\, but it is closing the gap fast.\nMore than 14 million people played outdoor soccer in the US in 2023\, reflecting the sport’s booming grassroots appeal.\nThe average American soccer fan is just 35 years old\, and nearly 70 percent of US soccer supporters are under 40.\nIn 2022\, soccer became the second most popular sport among American teenagers\, overtaking baseball for the first time.\n\nWhy National Soccer Day Matters\nSoccer is more than a pastime. SUMMARY:National Waterpark Day
DESCRIPTION:National Waterpark Day takes place on Tuesday\, 28 July 2026\, encouraging people across the United States to head to their nearest waterpark and make the most of the summer heat. Founded by Kalahari Resorts and Conventions\, the day celebrates the slides\, wave pools and lazy rivers that draw millions of visitors every year during the hottest stretch of the calendar. \nHow to Celebrate National Waterpark Day\nThe whole point of National Waterpark Day is to get out and enjoy the water\, so dive straight into these ideas. \n\nVisit a local waterpark – With more than 1\,000 waterparks across the United States\, there is likely one within easy reach. Pack sunscreen\, a towel and a sense of adventure\, and spend the day working your way through the slides.\nTackle a record-breaking slide – If you fancy a thrill\, seek out a headline attraction such as a tall body slide or a water coaster. Many parks build their summer marketing around their signature rides\, so 28 July is a good excuse to be brave.\nBuild your own backyard version – No park nearby? A garden hose\, a slip-and-slide and a paddling pool can recreate the fun at home for a fraction of the cost\, which is perfect for younger children.\nFloat the lazy river – Not every waterpark visit needs to be adrenaline-fuelled. Grab a rubber ring\, drift around the lazy river and let the day slow down.\nPlan a group outing – Waterparks are far more fun with friends and family. Organise a group trip\, split the picnic duties and turn the day into a proper summer event.\nTry an indoor waterpark resort – Resorts with indoor waterparks let you celebrate whatever the weather. They are also a good option for a weekend break that combines accommodation and splashing in one place.\nCool off in the wave pool – Wave pools recreate the feel of the ocean without the tides or the salt. They are ideal for families with mixed swimming abilities\, since the shallow end stays gentle.\nShare your day online – Post your favourite slide photos and tag the parks you visit. Many parks run social competitions on the day\, so you could win free passes for next time.\n\nWhat is National Waterpark Day?\nNational Waterpark Day is an annual American observance dedicated to the joy of waterparks and the relief they offer from summer heat. It is aimed at families\, thrill-seekers and anyone who enjoys a day spent on slides and in pools. The day celebrates the entire waterpark experience\, from towering slides to gentle splash pads for toddlers\, and it doubles as a celebration of an industry that has become a staple of the American summer. \nWhen is National Waterpark Day?\nNational Waterpark Day falls on 28 July every year. In 2026 that lands on a Tuesday. The date is deliberately fixed in late July because it sits in the hottest part of the Northern Hemisphere summer\, when a trip to the waterpark feels most welcome. \nThe History of National Waterpark Day\nNational Waterpark Day was founded in 2017 by Kalahari Resorts and Conventions\, a company with deep roots in the waterpark business. Kalahari opened its first waterpark in July 2000 in the Wisconsin Dells\, a region so packed with attractions that it is sometimes called the waterpark capital of the world. As the company expanded to other parts of the country\, it wanted a day that recognised the unique appeal of waterparks at the height of summer. \nThe Registrar at National Day Calendar reviewed the proposal and declared the observance official\, to be celebrated on 28 July each year. Choosing late July was no accident. July is typically the hottest month of the year across much of the United States\, and it is precisely when families look for ways to cool down and keep children entertained during the school holidays. \nWaterparks themselves have a much longer history. The modern outdoor waterpark grew rapidly through the late twentieth century\, and today the industry is worth billions of dollars annually. National Waterpark Day arrived as a way to bottle that summer spirit into a single\, sharable date that parks\, families and fans could rally around. \nFun Facts About National Waterpark Day\n\nThe United States has the largest and most concentrated waterpark market in the world\, with over 1\,000 waterparks and new ones opening every year.\nAs of 2024 the US waterpark industry was valued at roughly 5.9 billion dollars\, up more than 5 per cent on the previous year.\nNoah’s Ark in the Wisconsin Dells spans around 70 acres and boasts over 50 slides\, two wave pools and multiple lazy rivers\, making it one of America’s largest outdoor waterparks.\nIn 2023\, Typhoon Lagoon recorded the highest attendance of any US waterpark\, with around 1.9 million visitors.\nOf nearly 1\,200 waterparks across the United States and Canada in 2023\, more than 800 were outdoor parks.\nThe Wisconsin Dells\, where National Waterpark Day’s founder opened its first park\, is widely promoted as the waterpark capital of the world.\n\nWhy National Waterpark Day Matters\nBeyond the obvious fun\, National Waterpark Day celebrates affordable family time\, active outdoor play and the seasonal rituals that make summer memorable. Waterparks bring communities together\, support thousands of jobs and give children a reason to put down screens and cool off in the sunshine. If you enjoy marking the lighter side of the calendar\, you might also like Air Conditioning Appreciation Day\, another July observance born from the desire to beat the summer heat. \nFrequently Asked Questions\nWhat is National Waterpark Day?\nNational Waterpark Day is an annual American celebration of waterparks and the summer fun they provide. SUMMARY:Cheese Sacrifice Purchase Day
DESCRIPTION:Cheese Sacrifice Purchase Day falls on Wednesday\, 29 July 2026. It is a light-hearted\, unofficial food observance that started with a simple idea: buying a piece of cheese not to eat\, but to “sacrifice” by placing it on a mousetrap. There is no single founding organisation behind the day. It has been spread over the years by food bloggers and calendar websites such as Days of the Year and National Today\, and it has gradually shifted from a pest-control joke into a broader celebration of cheese. \nHow to Celebrate Cheese Sacrifice Purchase Day\nThis is a day made for cheese lovers\, and the best way to mark it is to get hands-on. Here are plenty of ways to take part. \n\nBuy a cheese you have never tried – Visit a deli or supermarket counter and pick up a variety you usually walk past\, whether that is a creamy taleggio\, a sharp aged gouda or a tangy goat’s cheese. The whole spirit of the day is built around the act of purchasing cheese.\nBuild a cheese board – Arrange three or four contrasting cheeses with crackers\, grapes\, chutney and nuts. Aim for a mix of textures and strengths so there is something for everyone.\nHost a tasting with friends – Ask each guest to bring one cheese and a few words about why they chose it. Compare notes and vote for a favourite by the end of the evening.\nSupport a local cheesemonger – Independent cheese shops and farm dairies put real craft into what they sell. Buying from them on this day is a tasty way to back small producers.\nCook a cheesy classic – Make a fondue\, a baked camembert\, a macaroni cheese or a proper grilled cheese sandwich. The day is a fine excuse to lean into comfort food.\nPair cheese with a drink – Try matching different cheeses with wine\, cider or even a good cup of tea\, and see which combinations work best for your palate.\nHonour the mousetrap origin with a wink – If you want to nod to where the day began\, set out a (humane) mouse trap or simply share the quirky backstory with friends who have never heard of it.\nDonate to a food bank – Many food banks welcome long-life cheese and other dairy staples. Buying an extra block to give away turns a fun day into a kind gesture.\n\nWhat is Cheese Sacrifice Purchase Day?\nCheese Sacrifice Purchase Day is an unofficial observance dedicated to the simple act of buying cheese. The “sacrifice” in the name refers to the old habit of buying cheese specifically to bait a mousetrap\, where the cheese is given up rather than eaten. Over time the mousetrap angle has faded into the background\, and the day now works as a gentle\, humorous celebration of cheese in all its forms. It is enjoyed mainly by food fans\, home cooks and anyone who likes an excuse to stock up on their favourite wedge. \nWhen is Cheese Sacrifice Purchase Day?\nCheese Sacrifice Purchase Day is observed every year on 29 July. In 2026 it falls on a Wednesday. The date is fixed\, so it lands on the same calendar day each year\, making it easy to plan a cheesy treat around it. It sits in a busy stretch of food-themed days\, arriving just one day before National Cheesecake Day on 30 July. \nThe History of Cheese Sacrifice Purchase Day\nThe roots of Cheese Sacrifice Purchase Day lie in one of the most familiar images in popular culture: a mousetrap baited with a small piece of cheese. For decades\, cartoons\, comics and storybooks reinforced the idea that mice could not resist cheese\, and that a wedge on a trap was the natural way to catch them. The “sacrifice” in the day’s title comes from this notion of giving up a piece of cheese to the trap rather than to the dinner table. \nThere is an amusing twist\, however. Research and the experience of many pest controllers suggest that mice are not especially drawn to cheese at all\, and often prefer sweeter or grain-based foods such as peanut butter\, cereal or chocolate. That gap between the cultural image and the reality is part of what gives the day its tongue-in-cheek charm. The cheese on the trap is more comic symbol than effective bait. \nLike many modern novelty observances\, the day has no documented founder and no official governing body. It was popularised through the early 2010s by food calendar websites and bloggers who catalogue unusual daily celebrations\, and it settled firmly onto 29 July through repeated listings. As it spread\, the focus drifted away from pest control and towards the far more appealing business of simply buying and enjoying cheese. If you enjoy these playful food celebrations\, you might also like National Cheese Day\, which honours cheese in a more straightforward way earlier in the summer. \nFun Facts About Cheese Sacrifice Purchase Day\n\nThe day falls on 29 July every year\, immediately before National Cheesecake Day on 30 July\, giving cheese fans a two-day run of celebrations.\nDespite the cartoon stereotype\, studies and pest-control experts report that mice generally prefer sweet and grain-based foods over cheese.\nThe “sacrifice” in the name refers to cheese being given up to a mousetrap rather than eaten\, a nod to the day’s quirky origins.\nThere is no official founder or organisation behind the day\, which has grown entirely through food blogs and online calendars.\nCheese is one of the oldest manufactured foods in the world\, with evidence of cheesemaking dating back thousands of years.\nThe modern version of the day has largely dropped the mousetrap theme in favour of celebrating cheese boards\, tastings and cooking.\n\nWhy Cheese Sacrifice Purchase Day Matters\nOn the surface this is a silly day\, but it still serves a purpose. It gives people a reason to try new varieties\, support independent cheesemongers and small dairies\, and gather friends and family around good food. Days like this keep regional cheesemaking traditions in the spotlight and add a little fun to the calendar. For anyone who already loves cheese\, it is simply a welcome excuse to indulge. You could even pair it with National Mac & Cheese Day earlier in the month for a proper season of cheese. \nFrequently Asked Questions\nWhat is Cheese Sacrifice Purchase Day?\nIt is an unofficial\, light-hearted food observance built around the act of buying cheese. The name comes from the old idea of “sacrificing” a piece of cheese to a mousetrap\, though today it is mostly a fun celebration of cheese itself. \nWhen is Cheese Sacrifice Purchase Day in 2026?\nIt takes place on Wednesday\, 29 July 2026. The date is fixed and falls on 29 July every year. \nWhy is it called a “sacrifice”?\nThe word refers to the tradition of buying cheese to bait a mousetrap\, where the cheese is given up rather than eaten. Amusingly\, mice often prefer sweeter foods\, so the cheese-on-a-trap image is more myth than method. \nSpread the Word\nJoin the celebration and share your best cheese board photos on social media with #CheeseSacrificePurchaseDay and #CheeseSacrificePurchaseDay2026. SUMMARY:National Challenged Champions and Heroes Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:National Challenged Champions and Heroes Awareness Day takes place on Wednesday\, 29 July 2026. The day recognises people living with physical and intellectual disabilities\, as well as the caregivers who support them\, and it was created to shift the focus from what these individuals cannot do towards their abilities\, achievements\, and worth. \nWhat is National Challenged Champions and Heroes Awareness Day?\nNational Challenged Champions and Heroes Awareness Day is an observance dedicated to honouring people with disabilities and the families\, carers\, and supporters who stand alongside them. It was established by the organisation Challenged Champions and Heroes\, founded by Dr Robin A. Lococo\, which deliberately reframes the word “disabled” as “Challenged Champion” in order to centre ability rather than limitation. The day is observed primarily in the United States and invites communities to recognise the resilience\, contributions\, and dignity of those who live with a disability every day. It also extends recognition to caregivers\, whom the organisation describes as “Heroes” for the dedication and love they give to those in their care. \nWhen is National Challenged Champions and Heroes Awareness Day?\nNational Challenged Champions and Heroes Awareness Day falls on 29 July every year. In 2026 this lands on a Wednesday. It is a fixed-date annual observance\, so the date does not change from one year to the next\, which makes it easy to plan recognition events\, school activities\, or community gatherings around it well in advance. \nWhy National Challenged Champions and Heroes Awareness Day Matters\nDisability touches a vast number of people. According to the World Health Organization\, an estimated 1.3 billion people\, around 16 percent of the global population\, live with a significant disability. Despite these numbers\, people with disabilities frequently encounter barriers to education\, employment\, healthcare\, and full participation in community life\, and many continue to experience stigma or discrimination. A day that focuses on champions rather than deficits helps challenge those attitudes at their root. \nThe observance also draws attention to the often invisible work of caregivers. Family members and unpaid carers provide enormous amounts of support\, frequently at considerable personal and financial cost\, yet their contribution can go unrecognised. By naming carers as heroes\, the day acknowledges a form of everyday dedication that holds families and communities together. Recognition matters because it builds the social will needed for better accessibility\, fairer policy\, and more inclusive workplaces and schools. \nHow to Get Involved in National Challenged Champions and Heroes Awareness Day\nThere are many meaningful ways to mark the day\, whether you are an individual\, a school\, a workplace\, or a community group. \n\nRecognise a champion or hero you know – Take a moment to publicly thank someone living with a disability or a carer in your life. A heartfelt message\, card\, or social media shout-out can mean a great deal.\nShare stories of achievement – Use the day to highlight the accomplishments of people with disabilities in sport\, the arts\, business\, science\, and community life\, helping to replace stereotypes with real examples of ability.\nAudit accessibility – Whether at home\, in your workplace\, or at a local venue\, check for barriers such as steps without ramps\, narrow doorways\, or inaccessible information\, and identify changes that could be made.\nSupport a disability charity – Donate\, volunteer\, or fundraise for an organisation that works with people who have disabilities\, or for one that provides respite and support to caregivers.\nLearn about inclusive language – Take time to understand respectful\, person-first or identity-first language and how thoughtful wording can affirm dignity rather than diminish it.\nHost a recognition event – Schools\, faith groups\, and community centres can hold an assembly\, awards ceremony\, or social gathering that celebrates local champions and the people who care for them.\nAmplify disabled voices – Follow\, listen to\, and share content created by disabled advocates and self-advocates\, and centre their perspectives rather than speaking on their behalf.\nCheck in on a carer – Offer practical help to someone providing care\, whether that means cooking a meal\, running an errand\, or simply giving them a few hours of respite.\n\nHistory of National Challenged Champions and Heroes Awareness Day\nThe day grew out of the work of Challenged Champions and Heroes\, an organisation founded in 2015 by Dr Robin A. Lococo. The inspiration behind it was deeply personal. Dr Lococo’s older sister\, Debra Marie Mosier\, died at the age of three from cerebral palsy\, and that loss shaped a lifelong commitment to people living with disabilities. Dr Lococo was herself born weighing just 2 pounds 9 ounces and has spoken about understanding first-hand what it is to be treated differently because of physical circumstances\, an experience that fuelled rather than limited her ambitions. \nFrom this foundation\, the organisation set out to redefine how society talks about disability\, replacing the label “disabled” with “Challenged Champion” and casting caregivers as everyday heroes. Dr Lococo created the National Awareness Day to give this mission a fixed point in the calendar each year on 29 July. The aim was not only to celebrate individuals but also to build education and awareness programmes around human rights and disability freedoms. \nThe observance gained formal recognition in 2021\, when the city of Groveland\, Florida\, issued a proclamation marking the day\, and it was subsequently added to the U.S. National Day archives. As with many grassroots awareness days\, its reach continues to grow largely through community advocates\, social media\, and supporters who share its message each summer. If you appreciate observances that champion inclusion\, you may also be interested in Disability Pride Month\, which runs throughout July and celebrates disability as a natural and valued part of human diversity. \nNoteworthy Facts About National Challenged Champions and Heroes Awareness Day\n\nThe day is observed annually on 29 July and is recognised primarily in the United States.\nIt was created by Dr Robin A. It is an annual food celebration dedicated to one of the world’s most beloved baked pasta dishes\, marked each year by home cooks\, restaurants and lasagna lovers across the United States and beyond. The day is a simple invitation to cook\, share and enjoy layers of pasta\, sauce and cheese. \nHow to Celebrate National Lasagna Day\nThe best way to mark National Lasagna Day is\, of course\, to eat lasagna\, but there are plenty of ways to make the occasion special: \n\nCook a lasagna from scratch – Tackle that recipe you have been putting off. Building the layers of pasta\, ragù\, béchamel and cheese is half the fun\, and a homemade tray always beats shop-bought.\nHost a lasagna potluck – Invite friends to each bring their own version and hold a friendly taste test. Award a prize for the best meat\, vegetarian and most creative entries.\nTry a regional Italian recipe – Move beyond the standard beef bake. Naples-style lasagna includes tiny meatballs\, ricotta and hard-boiled egg\, while Genoa swaps the meat sauce for fragrant pesto.\nGo vegetarian – Layer roasted aubergine\, courgette\, spinach and ricotta for a meat-free version that nods to lasagna’s earliest recipes\, which contained no meat at all.\nSupport a local Italian restaurant – Many trattorias and steakhouses run specials on 29 July. Booking a table is an easy way to enjoy the day without the washing up.\nMake a double batch and freeze one – Lasagna freezes beautifully\, so cook two and save a tray for a future midweek dinner.\nGet the family involved – Lasagna is a forgiving dish for children to help assemble. Let them spread the sauce and sprinkle the cheese between layers.\nShare it online – Photograph your finished bake\, fresh from the oven with the cheese still bubbling\, and post it with the day’s hashtags to inspire others.\n\nWhat is National Lasagna Day?\nNational Lasagna Day is an unofficial food holiday that celebrates lasagna\, the layered baked pasta dish with deep roots in Italian and Italian-American cooking. It is observed every year on 29 July across the United States\, where it has become a popular fixture of the summer calendar of food days. The day appeals to home cooks\, restaurant goers and anyone who appreciates comfort food\, and it carries no formal organising body\, making it a relaxed\, participation-led celebration that anyone can join. \nWhen is National Lasagna Day?\nNational Lasagna Day is celebrated annually on 29 July. In 2026 it falls on a Wednesday. The date is fixed and does not change from year to year\, so you can always count on lasagna having its moment in late July. \nThe History of National Lasagna Day\nThe exact origins of National Lasagna Day itself cannot be reliably traced\, which is common for the many unofficial food holidays that have grown up through American food culture. What can be traced\, in remarkable detail\, is the history of lasagna\, which stretches back thousands of years and gives the day its rich backdrop. \nThe word lasagna is widely believed to derive from the ancient Greek term laganon\, describing flat sheets of dough made from wheat and water. The Romans adapted the idea\, and a fifth-century Roman cookbook known as De Re Coquinaria contains what many regard as an early ancestor of the dish\, with layers of dough alternating with savoury fillings. The oldest written reference to lasagna in something close to its modern sense appears in the late thirteenth century\, with mentions of layered pasta and cheese recorded in Bologna around 1282 to 1284. An early recipe survives in the fourteenth-century Liber de Coquina\, in which sheets of dough were boiled and sprinkled with cheese and spices. \nCrucially\, none of these early versions contained tomato\, which was unknown in Europe until after the discovery of the Americas. Tomato did not enter the lasagna recipe until the late sixteenth century\, and the layered\, tomato-rich dish recognised around the world today took shape in the Emilia-Romagna region\, with Bologna often credited as its modern home. Lasagna arrived in the United States with Italian immigrants in the nineteenth century and became a staple of Italian-American kitchens\, eventually earning its own day on the calendar. \nFun Facts About National Lasagna Day\n\nThe earliest surviving lasagna recipes date to the fourteenth century and contained no tomato\, relying instead on cheese and spices.\nSome food historians suggest the word lasagna originally referred to the cooking pot rather than the dish itself.\nThe world’s largest lasagna was made by Magillo Restaurant and Macro Cash and Carry in Wieliczka\, Poland\, on 20 June 2012\, measuring roughly 25 metres by 2.5 metres.\nThat record-breaking lasagna used around 800kg of meat\, 500 litres of tomato sauce\, 2\,500kg of pasta sheets and 400kg of mozzarella.\nEvery Italian region has its own version\, from the meatball-laden Neapolitan style to the pesto-based lasagna of Genoa.\nThe dish is firmly fixed in popular culture thanks to the cartoon cat Garfield\, whose love of lasagna is one of the comic strip’s running jokes.\n\nWhy National Lasagna Day Matters\nFood days like this one do more than give us an excuse to eat well. National Lasagna Day celebrates a dish that has carried family tradition across generations and continents\, and it supports the independent Italian restaurants and delis that keep those recipes alive. The date is fixed\, so it lands on the same day annually regardless of the day of the week. It is observed most widely in the United States but is increasingly marked by beauty fans and brands around the world. \nThe History of National Lipstick Day\nThe modern observance is relatively recent. National Lipstick Day was founded in 2016 by Huda Kattan\, the makeup artist and entrepreneur behind the global beauty brand Huda Beauty. She created the day to recognise the cultural influence of lipstick and to encourage people to feel confident expressing themselves through colour. Since then it has grown into one of the busiest dates in the beauty calendar\, with major retailers and brands marking it through sales and limited-edition releases. \nLipstick itself has a far longer story. Ancient Sumerians are thought to have decorated their lips with crushed gemstones more than five thousand years ago. In ancient China\, lip colour was made using beeswax\, while in ancient Greece tinted lips\, often using berry-derived dyes\, carried particular social meaning. Over the centuries lipstick has moved in and out of respectability\, at times associated with status and glamour and at others viewed with suspicion\, before becoming the everyday staple it is today. \nThe twentieth century cemented lipstick’s place in popular culture. The invention of the swivel-up tube in 1923 made it portable and practical\, and Hollywood glamour turned bold red lips into an enduring symbol of confidence and style. National Lipstick Day is the modern continuation of that long love affair. \nFun Facts About National Lipstick Day\n\nThe day was founded in 2016 by Huda Kattan\, creator of Huda Beauty.\nLipstick dates back more than five thousand years to the ancient Sumerians\, who used crushed gemstones.\nAncient Chinese lip colour was made from beeswax.\nThe first swivel-up lipstick tube was patented in 1923\, making the product far more portable.\nRed is consistently among the most popular and iconic lipstick shades worldwide.\nThe day has become one of the biggest sales events in the beauty industry calendar.\n\nWhy National Lipstick Day Matters\nWhile it is a light-hearted celebration\, the day taps into something genuine: the link between how we present ourselves and how we feel. SUMMARY:National Chicken Wing Day
DESCRIPTION:National Chicken Wing Day takes place every year on 29 July\, celebrating one of America’s most beloved bar snacks: the humble chicken wing. The day honours the food’s origins in Buffalo\, New York\, and gives wing lovers across the United States a reason to fire up the fryer\, head to their favourite wing joint\, or argue once again over whether flats beat drums. \nHow to Celebrate National Chicken Wing Day\nThe whole point of National Chicken Wing Day is to eat wings and have fun doing it. Here are eight ways to mark the occasion: \n\nOrder from your favourite wing spot – Many restaurants and chains run deals and discounts on 29 July\, so it is the perfect excuse to grab a bucket of your go-to flavour without feeling guilty about the price.\nMake Buffalo wings from scratch – Fry or bake the wings until crisp\, then toss them in a sauce of melted butter and cayenne pepper hot sauce. Serve with celery sticks and blue cheese or ranch dressing for the classic Buffalo experience.\nHost a wing tasting – Lay out several sauces\, from mild barbecue to face-melting ghost pepper\, and rate them with friends. It turns dinner into a proper event and settles a few debates about who can handle the heat.\nSettle the flats versus drums argument – Roughly 32% of Americans prefer the flat wingette while 42% reach for the meatier drumette. Run a blind taste test and see which side your household lands on.\nTry a new flavour – Step beyond Buffalo and experiment with honey garlic\, lemon pepper\, Korean gochujang\, or dry-rub styles. Each region of the United States has its own favourite way of seasoning wings.\nPair wings with the right sides – Celery\, carrots\, and a cooling dip are traditional\, but loaded fries\, cornbread\, or coleslaw round out a proper wing feast.\nSupport a local independent – Skip the big chains and give your custom to a neighbourhood bar or family-run restaurant. Many small kitchens make their sauce in house and could use the support.\nShare your spread online – Post a photo of your plate\, tag the place that made them\, and join the thousands of people celebrating the day across social media.\n\nWhat is National Chicken Wing Day?\nNational Chicken Wing Day is an annual American food holiday dedicated to the chicken wing in all its forms\, from the original Buffalo style to the endless sauced and seasoned varieties served today. It is a light-hearted celebration enjoyed by home cooks\, restaurants\, sports fans\, and anyone who appreciates a plate of wings. The day pays tribute to a dish that began as an inexpensive\, often discarded cut of meat and grew into a cultural institution served in bars and kitchens across the country. If you enjoy American food traditions\, you might also like National Cheesesteak Day\, another regional classic with a fiercely loyal following. \nWhen is National Chicken Wing Day?\nNational Chicken Wing Day falls on Wednesday\, 29 July 2026. The date is fixed and the day is observed on 29 July every year\, marking the anniversary of the official proclamation that first recognised the holiday in Buffalo\, New York. \nThe History of National Chicken Wing Day\nThe story of the chicken wing begins in 1964 at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo\, New York\, run by Teressa and Frank Bellissimo. According to the family’s account\, Teressa was looking for something to serve and turned to a tray of chicken wings\, a cut that was at the time considered cheap and undesirable\, usually thrown away or saved for stock and soup. One version of the story holds that the wings arrived as a mistaken delivery in place of the backs and necks normally used for the bar’s spaghetti sauce. Faced with the unexpected ingredient\, Teressa deep-fried the wings\, tossed them in a butter and hot sauce mixture\, and served them with celery and blue cheese dressing. The result was an immediate hit. \nThe dish caught on quickly in Buffalo. Other restaurants began making their own versions\, with Duff’s in nearby Amherst starting to sell wings in 1969. As the recipe spread\, the snack picked up the name “Buffalo wings” in honour of the city where it was born. Over the following decades the wing travelled far beyond western New York\, becoming a fixture of sports bars\, restaurant menus\, and game-day spreads across the United States. \nThe holiday itself dates to 1977. The city of Buffalo issued an official proclamation honouring Anchor Bar co-owner Frank Bellissimo\, and Mayor Stan Makowski declared 29 July 1977 to be Chicken Wing Day. That proclamation gave the food its own annual celebration\, and the date has been observed as National Chicken Wing Day ever since. Today the day is recognised nationwide\, with restaurants\, brands\, and wing fans all taking part. \nFun Facts About National Chicken Wing Day\n\nBuffalo\, New York is recognised as the official birthplace of the chicken wing\, and the city still proudly claims the dish as its own.\nThe competitive eating record for chicken wings stands at 444 wings eaten in under 30 minutes.\nThe average American eats around 90 chicken wings per year\, and roughly 12 in a single sitting.\nAbout 63% of Americans prefer bone-in wings to boneless ones.\nAmericans were projected to eat roughly 1.47 billion wings during a single Super Bowl Sunday\, showing just how central the wing has become to American sporting culture.\nThe two segments of a prepared wing have their own names: the meatier “drumette” and the flatter “wingette\,” better known as the flat.\n\nWhy National Chicken Wing Day Matters\nBeyond the sauce-covered fingers\, National Chicken Wing Day is a celebration of community\, local business\, and a uniquely American food story. It supports the independent bars and restaurants that built the wing’s reputation\, brings friends and families together around a shared plate\, and keeps alive the legacy of a Buffalo kitchen that turned a throwaway cut into a national favourite. It is a reminder that some of the best-loved foods come from humble\, resourceful beginnings. \nFrequently Asked Questions\nWhat is National Chicken Wing Day?\nNational Chicken Wing Day is an American food holiday celebrating the chicken wing\, especially the Buffalo wing. SUMMARY:National Father-in-Law Day
DESCRIPTION:National Father-in-Law Day takes place on Thursday\, 30 July 2026. The day is a chance to recognise the fathers-in-law in our lives and the guidance\, support\, and family bonds they bring. It is an unofficial American observance held every year on 30 July\, and it offers a simple reason to say thank you to a father figure gained through marriage. \nWhat is National Father-in-Law Day?\nNational Father-in-Law Day is an annual celebration dedicated to fathers-in-law\, the men who become part of our families when we marry. It is not a public holiday\, but it has steadily gained recognition from observance calendars and greeting card makers as a counterpart to the longer-established Mother-in-Law Day. The day invites husbands and wives to acknowledge the role their partner’s father plays\, whether as a mentor\, a friend\, or a steady source of support. It is a warm\, low-key occasion centred on family and gratitude. \nWhen is National Father-in-Law Day?\nNational Father-in-Law Day is observed every year on 30 July. In 2026 it falls on a Thursday. The date is fixed\, so it lands on 30 July regardless of the day of the week. \nWhy National Father-in-Law Day Matters\nRelationships with in-laws are not always easy\, and the bond between a person and their father-in-law can take years to grow. A dedicated day gives families a gentle nudge to nurture that relationship and to appreciate the part a father-in-law plays in their lives. For many\, a father-in-law becomes a second father\, offering advice\, practical help\, and a sense of belonging. Marking the day\, even in a small way\, can strengthen ties and remind us not to take family connections for granted. \nHow to Get Involved in National Father-in-Law Day\nYou do not need to make a grand gesture. A little thought goes a long way. Here are some ideas: \n\nMake a phone call or visit – Simply reaching out to say hello and thank you can mean a great deal\, especially if you do not see each other often.\nSend a card or message – A handwritten note or a heartfelt text acknowledging his role in the family is a thoughtful and easy way to mark the day.\nCook or share a meal together – Invite your father-in-law over for dinner\, or take him out to a favourite restaurant. Shared experiences build lasting bonds.\nHelp with a task – Offering a hand with a job around the house or garden is a practical\, meaningful way to show you care.\nTell a story – Share a favourite memory of a time he helped you or made you laugh. Letting him know the difference he has made can be deeply touching.\n\nHistory of National Father-in-Law Day\nThe precise origins of National Father-in-Law Day are not well documented\, and no single founder or founding organisation is reliably recorded. Most accounts place its creation in the late twentieth century\, and it is widely thought to have emerged as a complement to the older Mother-in-Law Day. \nOne popular explanation is that a greeting card company introduced the day to encourage card sales\, much as has happened with several other relationship-focused observances. Another light-hearted theory suggests an envious father-in-law established the day in response to all the attention given to mothers-in-law. Both stories should be treated as folklore rather than fact\, as the genuine history is unclear. \nWhatever its beginnings\, the day steadily grew in recognition\, helped by observance websites that list it each 30 July. Today it sits comfortably alongside other family celebrations on the summer calendar. If you enjoy days that honour family relationships\, you might also like Parents’ Day\, which celebrates the parents who shape our lives. \nNoteworthy Facts About National Father-in-Law Day\n\nIt is observed every year on 30 July in the United States.\nIt is widely seen as a counterpart to Mother-in-Law Day\, which falls on the fourth Sunday of October.\nThe day is not an official federal holiday but is recognised by major observance calendars.\nIts origins are uncertain\, with theories ranging from greeting card marketing to a playful response to Mother-in-Law Day.\nFor many people\, a father-in-law becomes a trusted second father over time.\n\nFrequently Asked Questions\nWhat is National Father-in-Law Day?\nIt is an unofficial American observance celebrating fathers-in-law. Recognising interns is not only a courtesy; it helps organisations build loyalty\, strengthen their reputation among early-career talent and remind themselves that today’s intern may be tomorrow’s full-time hire or future leader. The aim was to give thousands of employers a dedicated occasion to commemorate and thank their interns\, and to put early-career talent at the centre of attention for a day. \nThe inaugural event was an immediate success. The response was strong enough that National Intern Day became one of the most engaged-with topics globally on social media on its launch day\, drawing in more than 1\,000 participating companies in its first year. That momentum established the day as a recurring fixture in the corporate calendar. \nWayUp was later acquired by the recruitment technology company Yello in 2021\, and the observance continued under that stewardship. It has since grown to include recognition programmes such as published lists of top internship schemes\, with one recent edition drawing well over 100\,000 public votes alongside expert judging. \nNoteworthy Facts About National Intern Day\n\nNational Intern Day was created by WayUp in 2017.\nIt is observed on the last Thursday of July\, placing it on 30 July in 2026.\nMore than 1\,000 companies took part in the very first National Intern Day.\nThe launch day in 2017 became one of the most engaged-with topics globally on social media.\nWayUp was acquired by Yello in 2021\, which now continues the celebration.\n\nFrequently Asked Questions\nWhat is National Intern Day?\nIt is an annual observance recognising and thanking interns\, encouraging employers to celebrate the early-career talent working within their organisations. \nWhen is National Intern Day in 2026?\nIt is on Thursday\, 30 July 2026\, the last Thursday of the month. \nWho created National Intern Day?\nIt was founded in 2017 by the careers platform WayUp\, which was later acquired by Yello in 2021. \nSpread the Word\nHelp raise awareness by sharing National Intern Day with your colleagues and network. SUMMARY:National Support Public Education Day
DESCRIPTION:National Support Public Education Day takes place on Thursday\, 30 July 2026. The day was created to raise awareness of the importance of public schools\, the challenges they face\, and the people who keep them running. It is a moment to recognise teachers\, support staff\, and the wider community whose efforts make free\, accessible education possible for millions of children. \nWhat is National Support Public Education Day?\nNational Support Public Education Day is an annual observance held each year on 30 July that draws attention to the value of public education and the issues affecting it. It was founded to highlight problems such as low teacher pay\, excessive standardised testing\, and shrinking classroom resources\, while celebrating everyone who contributes to public schools. That includes not only teachers but also bus drivers\, cafeteria workers\, counsellors\, and administrative staff who help children learn\, stay safe\, and feel supported. \nWhen is National Support Public Education Day?\nNational Support Public Education Day falls on Thursday\, 30 July 2026. It is observed on the same date every year\, sitting in the middle of the summer break when many in the education community have a moment to reflect on the year just gone and the one ahead. \nWhy National Support Public Education Day Matters\nPublic education is the foundation on which much of society is built\, offering every child the chance to learn regardless of their family’s means. Yet public schools frequently operate under significant strain\, contending with tight budgets\, staff shortages\, and growing demands on teachers. The day matters because it reminds communities that supporting their schools is a shared responsibility\, and that strong public education benefits everyone\, not just those currently in the classroom. It also offers public recognition to staff whose work too often goes unseen. \nHow to Get Involved in National Support Public Education Day\nThere are many meaningful ways to mark the day\, large and small: \n\nThank a teacher or school worker – A simple message of appreciation to a teacher\, teaching assistant\, or support staff member can mean a great deal to those who give so much.\nDonate supplies to a local school – Stationery\, books\, and classroom materials are always welcome\, particularly in schools serving under-resourced communities.\nVolunteer your time – Offer to help with reading sessions\, school events\, or extracurricular activities to give staff and pupils extra support.\nAttend a school board meeting – Getting involved in local decision-making helps ensure schools have the backing and resources they need.\nSupport a public education charity – Donating to an organisation that champions public schools extends your impact beyond your own neighbourhood.\nRaise awareness online – Sharing facts about public education and the challenges schools face helps spark wider conversation and support.\nGet involved in your child’s school – Joining a parent association or simply staying engaged with your child’s education strengthens the whole school community.\n\nHistory of National Support Public Education Day\nNational Support Public Education Day was established in 2010 by Chris Janotta\, a language arts teacher from Illinois. He created the day with the help of the SOS Million Teacher March\, a movement focused on raising the profile of issues affecting public schools and the educators who staff them. \nThe day emerged at a time of growing concern about the pressures facing public education\, including stagnant teacher salaries\, an increasing emphasis on standardised testing\, and the steady erosion of classroom budgets. By dedicating a date to the cause\, its founder hoped to give parents\, teachers\, and ordinary citizens a focal point for showing their support and demanding that public education receive the investment and respect it deserves. In the years since\, the observance has been taken up by educators and advocacy groups who use it to celebrate school staff and to keep the conversation about adequate funding alive. \nNoteworthy Facts About National Support Public Education Day\n\nThe day was founded in 2010 by Illinois teacher Chris Janotta.\nIt was launched in partnership with the SOS Million Teacher March\, a public education advocacy movement.\nIt is observed on 30 July\, during the summer school holidays in the United States.\nThe day recognises all school staff\, from teachers to bus drivers and cafeteria workers\, not just classroom educators.\nIt highlights ongoing issues such as teacher pay\, over-testing\, and underfunding of classroom resources.\n\nFrequently Asked Questions\nWhat is National Support Public Education Day?\nIt is an annual day\, held on 30 July\, dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of public schools\, the challenges they face\, and the people who make them work. \nWhen is National Support Public Education Day in 2026?\nIt falls on Thursday\, 30 July 2026\, and is observed on 30 July every year. \nWho founded National Support Public Education Day?\nIt was founded in 2010 by Chris Janotta\, a language arts teacher from Illinois\, with support from the SOS Million Teacher March. \nSpread the Word\nHelp raise awareness by sharing National Support Public Education Day with your friends\, family\, and followers. SUMMARY:National Whistleblower Day
DESCRIPTION:National Whistleblower Day takes place on Thursday\, 30 July 2026 across the United States. The observance honours the men and women who expose fraud\, corruption\, and wrongdoing\, and it marks the anniversary of the first whistleblower protection law\, passed unanimously by the Continental Congress on 30 July 1778. It is recognised each year through a resolution of the United States Senate. \nWhat is National Whistleblower Day?\nNational Whistleblower Day is an annual observance that recognises the contribution whistleblowers make to honest government\, fair markets\, and public safety. It is led by the National Whistleblower Center\, a non-profit organisation founded in 1988 by attorneys Stephen Kohn\, Michael Kohn\, and David Colapinto. The day celebrates those who speak up about misconduct\, often at considerable personal and professional risk\, and it calls attention to the legal protections that exist to shield them from retaliation. \nWhen is National Whistleblower Day?\nNational Whistleblower Day falls on 30 July every year. In 2026 that is a Thursday. The date is fixed because it commemorates 30 July 1778\, the day the Continental Congress enacted America’s first law protecting people who report wrongdoing. Since 2013\, the United States Senate has passed a resolution each year formally designating 30 July as National Whistleblower Appreciation Day. \nWhy National Whistleblower Day Matters\nWhistleblowers are frequently the first and only people to flag fraud against taxpayers\, threats to public health\, financial crime\, and dangers in the workplace. Their disclosures have recovered enormous sums for the public purse. Under the US False Claims Act alone\, whistleblower-initiated cases have helped the Department of Justice recover tens of billions of dollars in fraudulently obtained funds over the past few decades. Programmes run by the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Internal Revenue Service have paid out substantial awards to individuals whose tips led to successful enforcement actions. \nSpeaking up carries real consequences. Many whistleblowers face dismissal\, demotion\, or blacklisting\, and the legal battles that follow can stretch on for years. National Whistleblower Day exists to remind the public\, employers\, and lawmakers that strong protections are not a courtesy but a necessity for a functioning democracy and an honest economy. \nHow to Get Involved in National Whistleblower Day\nThere are many ways to mark the day\, whether you work in compliance\, run an organisation\, or simply want to support a fairer society. \n\nLearn the law – Read up on the key statutes such as the False Claims Act\, the Dodd-Frank Act\, and the Whistleblower Protection Act so you understand your rights and the safeguards available to you.\nThank a whistleblower – Share the story of someone who spoke up and made a difference\, and acknowledge the courage it took. Public recognition helps counter the stigma that still surrounds whistleblowing.\nReview your workplace policy – If you manage a team\, use the day to check that your organisation has a clear\, confidential\, and retaliation-free reporting channel that employees actually trust.\nAttend an event – The National Whistleblower Center and partner organisations host talks\, panels\, and an annual celebration around 30 July. Many sessions are open to the public or streamed online.\nSupport an advocacy group – Donate to or volunteer with organisations that provide legal assistance and representation to people who report wrongdoing.\nShare on social media – Post about the day using the official hashtags to raise awareness among friends\, colleagues\, and your wider network.\nWrite to your representatives – Encourage lawmakers to pass permanent legislation establishing National Whistleblower Day and to strengthen existing protections.\nEducate your team – Run a short briefing or lunch session explaining how staff can raise concerns safely and what happens after a report is made.\n\nHistory of National Whistleblower Day\nThe origins of National Whistleblower Day reach back to the American Revolution. In February 1777\, ten sailors and marines serving in the Continental Navy petitioned the Continental Congress with allegations against their commanding officer\, Commodore Esek Hopkins. They accused him of mistreating captured British prisoners. Two of the petitioners\, Samuel Shaw and Richard Marven\, were subsequently arrested after Hopkins retaliated by filing a libel suit against them. \nMarven and Shaw petitioned Congress again\, arguing they had done nothing to deserve their treatment. On 30 July 1778\, Congress responded by unanimously enacting America’s first whistleblower protection law. The resolution declared that it was “the duty of all persons in the service of the United States” to give the earliest information to Congress of any misconduct\, frauds\, or misdemeanours committed by those serving the new nation. Congress went further still\, voting to cover the legal costs of the two men so they could defend themselves against Hopkins. \nThe modern observance grew from the work of the National Whistleblower Center. Beginning in 2015\, the Center held an annual celebration each 30 July to honour whistleblowers past and present. Since 2013 the Senate has passed a resolution designating the day\, and advocates continue to press both chambers of Congress to make National Whistleblower Day a permanent fixture in law rather than one renewed year by year. Those interested in the broader fight against fraud may also follow International Anti-Corruption Day\, which extends the same principles to a global stage. \nNoteworthy Facts About National Whistleblower Day\n\nThe law commemorated by the day was passed on 30 July 1778\, making it one of the earliest pieces of whistleblower legislation anywhere in the world.\nThe first American whistleblowers\, Samuel Shaw and Richard Marven\, were sailors and marines\, not corporate insiders.\nThe United States Senate has unanimously passed a resolution recognising the day every year since 2013.\nThe National Whistleblower Center was founded in 1988 and began hosting an annual 30 July celebration in 2015.\nWhistleblower cases brought under the False Claims Act have helped the US government recover tens of billions of dollars in fraud-related funds.\n\nFrequently Asked Questions\nWhat is National Whistleblower Day?\nIt is an annual US observance recognising the people who expose fraud\, corruption\, and wrongdoing. SUMMARY:National Get Gnarly Day
DESCRIPTION:National Get Gnarly Day falls on Friday\, 31 July 2026. It is a light-hearted American observance that encourages people to shake off routine\, try something bold\, and put a bit of daring into whatever they do. The day lands on the last Friday in July each year\, which makes it a natural cue to round off the month with something adventurous. \nHow to Celebrate National Get Gnarly Day\nThe whole point of the day is to do something out of the ordinary\, so the ideas below lean towards action rather than reflection: \n\nTake up a gnarly hobby – Try rock climbing\, skateboarding\, mountain biking\, or surfing. The word gnarly came from surfers describing wild waves\, so catching one is fitting.\nSay yes to an invitation you would normally decline – Stepping outside your usual circle introduces new people and unexpected experiences\, which is exactly the spirit of the day.\nPlan a bold trip – Sort out a passport or map out an adventure somewhere you have never been. Gnarly people tend to be travellers.\nChange up your look – Go for a bold new hairstyle or add some vivid pieces to your wardrobe. A small visible change can shift how you feel for the rest of the month.\nTry an extreme sport – Book a session of indoor skydiving\, a high ropes course\, white-water rafting\, or a climbing wall\, with proper instruction and safety gear.\nThrow a gnarly party – Host a themed gathering where guests wear their most eccentric outfits and you serve food you have never cooked before.\nTackle something you have been avoiding – Sign up for the cooking class\, start the side project\, or have the brave conversation. Gnarliness can be everyday courage\, not just adrenaline.\nVolunteer for something new – Offer your time to a local cause you have never supported before. Doing good in an unfamiliar setting still counts as getting gnarly.\n\nWhat is National Get Gnarly Day?\nNational Get Gnarly Day is a fun\, unofficial observance that invites people to embrace new ideas\, drop tired old habits\, and approach life with a bit more boldness. The word gnarly has worn several meanings over the decades\, from a surfer’s term for a difficult wave to 1980s slang for anything excellent or extreme. Today it stands for whatever is wild\, cool\, or daring\, and the day exists to give that attitude a place on the calendar. Anyone can take part\, and there are no rules beyond doing something a little braver than usual. \nWhen is National Get Gnarly Day?\nNational Get Gnarly Day is observed on the last Friday in July each year. In 2026 that falls on Friday\, 31 July. Because the date is tied to the final Friday of the month rather than a fixed number\, it shifts slightly from year to year. The table below shows the next five occurrences. \n\n\n\nYear\nDate\n\n\n\n\n2026\nFriday\, 31 July\n\n\n2027\nFriday\, 30 July\n\n\n2028\nFriday\, 28 July\n\n\n2029\nFriday\, 27 July\n\n\n2030\nFriday\, 26 July\n\n\n\nThe History of National Get Gnarly Day\nNational Get Gnarly Day has a corporate origin that is unusually well documented for a quirky observance. It was created by Whirlpool Corporation\, which in 2016 launched an internal campaign built around the idea of putting some gNARliness into everything the company did. The capitalised letters in the middle of the word were deliberate: NAR stood for North American Region\, and the campaign was a way to encourage staff to get excited about reaching goals and looking after customers. \nThe Registrar at National Day Calendar approved the day in June 2016\, fixing it to the last Friday in July. The word itself has a longer story. It is thought to have emerged among surfers in the 1960s as a way of describing dangerous or impressive waves. By the 1980s it had crossed into mainstream pop-culture slang\, where it could mean either excellent or\, oddly\, disgusting depending on the speaker. The awareness day leans on the positive reading\, treating gnarly as a badge for anyone willing to take on a challenge. \nFun Facts About National Get Gnarly Day\n\nThe day was created by Whirlpool Corporation\, the home appliance manufacturer\, as part of an internal staff campaign.\nThe NAR in gNARliness stood for Whirlpool’s North American Region.\nIt was approved by National Day Calendar in June 2016.\nThe word gnarly is believed to have started as 1960s surfer slang for difficult waves.\nBy the 1980s\, gnarly could mean either excellent or gross\, depending entirely on context.\nThe date always lands on the last Friday in July\, so it never falls on the same calendar date two years running.\n\nWhy National Get Gnarly Day Matters\nEven a playful observance has a point. National Get Gnarly Day is a small nudge to step out of comfortable routines\, try things that feel slightly out of reach\, and approach the rest of the year with more confidence. For many people the hardest part of doing something new is simply starting\, and a dedicated day gives that first step a bit of permission and momentum. \nFrequently Asked Questions\nWhat is National Get Gnarly Day?\nIt is a fun\, unofficial American observance that encourages people to be bold\, try new things\, and add some daring to their everyday lives. SUMMARY:Lifeguard Appreciation Day
DESCRIPTION:Lifeguard Appreciation Day takes place on 31 July 2026 and recognises the men and women who keep swimmers safe at beaches\, pools\, lakes\, and water parks. The day was created to thank lifeguards for their vigilance\, training\, and willingness to put themselves in harm’s way to protect others. It falls during the peak of the summer swimming season\, when lifeguards are at their busiest. \nWhat is Lifeguard Appreciation Day?\nLifeguard Appreciation Day is an annual observance dedicated to honouring lifeguards and the vital role they play in drowning prevention. It was founded by Ellis & Associates\, a Florida-based aquatic safety and risk management company\, to raise awareness of the skill and dedication that the job demands. The day is for everyone who has ever swum at a supervised beach or pool\, and it shines attention on a profession that often goes unnoticed until an emergency strikes. Lifeguards are trained in water rescue\, first aid\, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation\, and they spend long shifts scanning the water for signs of trouble. \nWhen is Lifeguard Appreciation Day?\nLifeguard Appreciation Day is observed on Friday\, 31 July 2026. It is held on the same date every year\, falling at the height of summer when pools and beaches are at their fullest and the demand on lifeguards is greatest. Because the date is fixed\, it always lands on 31 July regardless of the day of the week. \nWhy Lifeguard Appreciation Day Matters\nDrowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death worldwide\, claiming roughly 236\,000 lives each year according to global health estimates. Lifeguards dramatically reduce that toll: studies suggest that supervised beaches cut drowning risk substantially\, and the United States Lifesaving Association has calculated that the chance of drowning at a beach protected by its affiliated lifeguards is around one in 18 million. In 2022 alone\, lifeguards at participating beaches performed more than 67\,000 major rescues and prevented tens of thousands of dangerous incidents through preventive action. Many of these rescues involve rip currents\, which account for the majority of beach saves. Behind every quiet day at the water is a team of trained professionals whose presence makes that calm possible. \nHow to Get Involved in Lifeguard Appreciation Day\nThere are many simple ways to show your gratitude and support water safety on this day: \n\nThank a lifeguard in person – If you visit a pool or beach\, take a moment to thank the lifeguards on duty. A few kind words can make a long\, hot shift more rewarding.\nLearn the basics of water safety – Brush up on how to spot a rip current\, what the warning flags mean\, and why you should always swim near a lifeguard station.\nTake a CPR or first aid course – Knowing how to respond in an emergency complements the work lifeguards do and could one day save a life.\nSupport your local lifesaving association – Many lifeguard services rely on donations and volunteers to fund training and equipment. A small contribution helps keep beaches staffed.\nEncourage young people to train – Lifeguarding teaches responsibility\, fitness\, and leadership. Suggest it to a teenager looking for a meaningful summer job.\nFollow water safety guidance – The best way to honour lifeguards is to make their job easier by swimming sensibly\, supervising children\, and obeying posted rules.\nShare the message online – Post a photo or note of thanks and spread awareness about the importance of supervised swimming to your friends and family.\n\nHistory of Lifeguard Appreciation Day\nLifeguard Appreciation Day was established in 2020 by Ellis & Associates\, an organisation specialising in aquatic safety\, risk management\, and lifeguard training. The first observance was held on 31 July 2020\, during the COVID-19 pandemic\, when pools and water parks were reopening under strict health guidelines. Lifeguards at the time faced an unusual challenge: not only did they have to watch the water and respond to emergencies\, but they also had to manage crowds and enforce new public health rules. The day was created to recognise their resilience during that demanding period. \nWhile the modern observance is relatively recent\, the tradition of organised lifeguarding stretches back well over a century. Formal rescue services developed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries\, and innovations such as the rescue can\, introduced in 1897\, transformed the way lifeguards reached and recovered swimmers in distress. Organisations including the YMCA began running lifesaving programmes in the early 1900s\, laying the groundwork for the professional standards that govern lifeguarding today. \nSince its founding\, Lifeguard Appreciation Day has spread beyond its original audience. Recreation centres\, swimming clubs\, beaches\, and local councils across the United States and beyond now mark the occasion\, turning what began as a pandemic-era thank you into an annual tradition celebrating water safety professionals everywhere. \nNoteworthy Facts About Lifeguard Appreciation Day\n\nThe day was founded in 2020 by Ellis & Associates\, a leading name in aquatic safety training.\nCertified lifeguards around the world are credited with rescuing more than one million people every year.\nRip currents are the single biggest cause of beach rescues\, accounting for around 80 per cent of lifeguard saves at the shoreline.\nThe rescue can\, a key piece of lifeguard equipment still used today\, dates back to 1897.\nThe chance of drowning at a beach guarded by USLA-affiliated lifeguards is estimated at roughly one in 18 million.\n\nFrequently Asked Questions\nWhat is Lifeguard Appreciation Day?\nIt is an annual day\, observed on 31 July\, that recognises lifeguards for their work in keeping swimmers safe and preventing drownings at pools\, beaches\, and other waterways. \nWhen is Lifeguard Appreciation Day in 2026?\nLifeguard Appreciation Day falls on Friday\, 31 July 2026. The date is fixed and does not change from year to year. \nWho founded Lifeguard Appreciation Day?\nThe day was created in 2020 by Ellis & Associates\, an aquatic safety and risk management company based in Florida\, to thank lifeguards working through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. \nSpread the Word\nHelp raise awareness by sharing Lifeguard Appreciation Day with your friends\, family\, and followers. The day has no serious agenda beyond celebrating the simple pleasure of eating them. It appeals to children and adults alike\, anyone with a sweet tooth\, and the many fans who have strong opinions about which colours and flavours reign supreme. \nWhen is National Jump for Jelly Beans Day?\nNational Jump for Jelly Beans Day takes place on 31 July every year. In 2026 it falls on a Friday\, making it a perfect way to start a sweet summer weekend. The date is fixed\, so it lands on the same day each year. \nThe History of National Jump for Jelly Beans Day\nThe exact origins of National Jump for Jelly Beans Day are unclear\, and no single founder has been credited with creating it. It appears to have emerged in the United States in the early 2000s as one of many playful food holidays that fill the calendar\, spread largely through websites\, social media\, and confectionery enthusiasts. \nThe sweet at its heart has a far longer and better-documented history. Jelly beans are thought to combine two older techniques: the soft\, gel-like centre descends from Turkish delight\, while the hard sugar coating uses a method known as panning that dates back centuries to the making of sugared almonds. The first known reference to jelly beans appeared in an advertisement in the Boston Daily News in 1861\, when the Boston confectioner William Schrafft is said to have encouraged people to send them to soldiers during the American Civil War. \nJelly beans became firmly associated with Easter from the 1930s\, thanks to their egg-like shape\, and their popularity received a famous boost when President Ronald Reagan declared them his favourite sweet\, even keeping a jar on his desk in the Oval Office. Today they remain a year-round favourite\, which makes a midsummer day in their honour entirely fitting. \nFun Facts About National Jump for Jelly Beans Day\n\nThe earliest known mention of jelly beans appeared in an 1861 advertisement\, linked to Boston confectioner William Schrafft.\nPresident Ronald Reagan was such a devotee that blueberry-flavoured jelly beans were reportedly created so that red\, white\, and blue beans could be served at his 1981 inauguration.\nIt takes between seven and fourteen days to make a single jelly bean\, owing to the slow panning process that builds up the shell.\nThe shell and the centre of a jelly bean are made in separate stages\, which is why the texture differs from outside to in.\nJelly beans became a staple of Easter celebrations in the 1930s because their shape resembles tiny eggs.\nSome manufacturers now produce hundreds of flavours\, ranging from classic fruit to deliberately unpleasant novelty tastes designed for daring games.\n\nWhy National Jump for Jelly Beans Day Matters\nNot every day on the calendar needs a weighty cause\, and that is rather the point of this one. National Jump for Jelly Beans Day is about small joys\, shared treats\, and a bit of childish fun in the middle of summer. It also gives a nod to the craft and history behind a sweet that has delighted generations. If you enjoy days dedicated to confectionery\, you might also like National Lollipop Day\, another sugary July celebration. \nFrequently Asked Questions\nWhat is National Jump for Jelly Beans Day?\nIt is a fun American food holiday celebrating jelly beans\, encouraging people to enjoy the colourful sweets and have a bit of fun in their honour. \nWhen is National Jump for Jelly Beans Day in 2026?\nIt takes place on Friday\, 31 July 2026\, and falls on the same date every year. \nHow are jelly beans made?\nJelly beans are made in two stages: a soft gel centre is formed first\, then a hard sugar shell is gradually built up around it through a slow process called panning\, which can take up to two weeks. \nSpread the Word\nJoin the celebration and share your jelly bean creations\, flavour challenges\, and colourful photos on social media with #JumpForJellyBeansDay and #JumpForJellyBeansDay2026. SUMMARY:National Mutt Day
DESCRIPTION:National Mutt Day is an annual observance that celebrates mixed-breed dogs and encourages people to adopt them from shelters and rescues. It falls on Friday 31 July 2026\, and is also marked a second time each year on 2 December. The day was founded in 2005 by Colleen Paige\, an animal welfare advocate\, pet lifestyle expert and behaviourist who also created National Dog Day\, National Puppy Day and National Cat Day. The aim is straightforward: to embrace\, save and celebrate the millions of mixed-breed dogs that fill animal shelters and to remind people that a dog without a pedigree can make the most loyal companion of all. \nHow to Celebrate National Mutt Day\nThere are dozens of ways to get involved\, whether you already share your home with a mixed-breed dog or simply want to support the cause. Here are some ideas to mark the day. \n\nAdopt a mixed-breed dog from a local shelter or rescue organisation and give one more dog a loving home.\nMake a donation to an animal shelter\, whether in money\, food\, blankets\, toys or cleaning supplies.\nVolunteer your time at a rescue centre by walking dogs\, cleaning kennels or helping with administration.\nFoster a shelter dog to free up space and give an anxious animal a calmer place to wait for adoption.\nShare photos of your own mutt on social media to celebrate their unique looks and personality.\nSponsor a kennel or cover the adoption fee for a dog who has been waiting a long time for a home.\nTreat your own dog to something special\, such as a long walk\, a new toy or a trip to the park.\nSpread the word by telling friends and family about the benefits of adopting a mixed-breed dog.\n\nWhat is National Mutt Day?\nNational Mutt Day\, sometimes called National Mixed Breed Dog Day\, is dedicated to raising awareness of the enormous number of mixed-breed dogs in need of homes. A mutt is simply a dog whose ancestry includes more than one breed\, often with an unknown or untraceable mix. These dogs make up a large share of the animals living in shelters\, and they are frequently overlooked in favour of pedigree puppies. \nThe observance exists to challenge that bias. Mixed-breed dogs are intelligent\, affectionate and adaptable\, and many studies suggest they benefit from a wider gene pool that can reduce the inherited health problems common in some pure breeds. National Mutt Day asks people to look past appearances and recognise that every dog deserves a chance at a happy life\, regardless of pedigree. \nWhen is National Mutt Day?\nNational Mutt Day is unusual in that it is observed twice every year. In 2026 the first occurrence falls on Friday 31 July\, and the second takes place on Wednesday 2 December. Colleen Paige chose two dates deliberately\, reasoning that two days of awareness across the calendar would help more dogs find homes than a single annual event could. Both dates carry the same message and are celebrated in the same way\, so supporters can choose whichever suits them or take part on both. \nThe History of National Mutt Day\nNational Mutt Day was established in 2005 by Colleen Paige. A celebrity pet and family lifestyle expert\, author and animal behaviourist\, Paige has spent her career advocating for animal welfare and is responsible for a string of well-known canine observances. She created National Mutt Day after recognising that mixed-breed dogs were being euthanised in shelters at far higher rates than their pedigree counterparts\, often simply because they were harder to identify or considered less desirable. \nBy setting up the day\, Paige hoped to shift public attitudes and encourage prospective owners to consider adoption rather than buying from breeders. Over the years the observance has grown into an internationally recognised event\, embraced by shelters\, rescues and dog lovers far beyond its origins in the United States. Animal charities now use the two dates to run adoption drives\, fundraising campaigns and awareness events designed to clear kennels and find permanent homes. \nFun Facts About Mutts\nMixed-breed dogs have plenty of qualities worth celebrating. Here are some facts that show why mutts are so special. \n\nMixed-breed dogs make up roughly three quarters of the dogs living in animal shelters.\nAround half of all pet dogs in the United States are estimated to be mixed-breed.\nMutts often benefit from hybrid vigour\, a broader gene pool that can lower the risk of certain inherited conditions.\nNo two mutts look exactly alike\, so every mixed-breed dog has a genuinely one-of-a-kind appearance.\nAffordable DNA tests can now reveal the surprising breed mix behind a rescue dog’s looks.\nMany famous working dogs\, including search-and-rescue and therapy dogs\, are mixed breeds chosen for temperament rather than pedigree.\n\nWhy National Mutt Day Matters\nEvery year\, vast numbers of healthy\, loving dogs are euthanised in shelters simply because there are not enough homes for them\, and mixed-breed dogs make up the largest share of those losses. National Mutt Day matters because it puts these animals in the spotlight and reminds people that adoption saves lives. Choosing to adopt rather than shop frees up shelter space\, reduces demand that fuels irresponsible breeding\, and gives a deserving dog a second chance. \nThe day also celebrates the dogs themselves. Mixed-breed dogs are endlessly varied\, often robustly healthy and just as capable of love and loyalty as any pedigree. By marking National Mutt Day\, communities help break down the snobbery that surrounds dog ownership and build a culture where a dog is valued for its character rather than its bloodline. \nFrequently Asked Questions\nWhy is National Mutt Day celebrated twice a year?Founder Colleen Paige set two dates\, 31 July and 2 December\, so that awareness of mixed-breed dogs and the need for adoption is spread across the year rather than concentrated on a single day. \nWhat counts as a mutt?A mutt is any dog whose ancestry includes more than one breed\, usually with an unknown or mixed lineage. The term is affectionate rather than negative and applies to a huge range of shapes\, sizes and coat types. \nAre mixed-breed dogs healthier than pure breeds? Many mutts benefit from a wider gene pool that can reduce the risk of breed-specific inherited conditions\, though health always depends on the individual dog\, its care and its environment. \nSpread the Word\nHelp mixed-breed dogs find homes by sharing National Mutt Day across your social channels. Post a photo of your own mutt\, tag your local shelter and encourage others to consider adoption. SUMMARY:National Mustard Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:The first Saturday in August sees us celebrate National Mustard Day. Mustard is a condiment made from the seeds of a mustard plant. The whole\, bruised\, cracked\, or ground seeds are mixed with liquid (water\, lemon juice\, vinegar\, oil)\, salt and sometimes spices to create a sauce or paste. \nSome interesting facts about mustard! \nMustard was first recorded as being prepared by wealthy Romans\, who mixed wine and mustard seeds and added it to their meals. \nAmerica is the country that uses the most mustard in the world\, with yellow mustard (a mild\, American-style condiment\, often used on hot dogs) being the most commonly used. Because of this\, the rest of the world refers to it as American mustard. \nMustard is healthy: its seeds are full of nutrients and antioxidants. They contain selenium\, omega-3 and 6\, potassium\, magnesium and calcium\, which have anti-inflammatory properties and are also supposed to speed up the metabolism and lower blood pressure. \nBefore people began eating mustard\, it was used for medicinal purposes. French monks were known to use mustard to treat their wounds while Greeks used it to relieve muscles\, cure toothaches and stimulate appetite and digestion. A mustard bath is a traditional therapeutic remedy for tired\, stressed muscles\, colds\, fevers and seizures. The mustard was thought to draw out toxins and warm the muscles\, blood and body. It was a standard medical practice up until the first part of the twentieth century and continues to be used in alternative medicine. \nDid you know there is a National Mustard Museum? Opening in 1986 by founder and mustard collector Barry Levenson. The museum opened to the public in 1992 in Mount Hroeb and consists of 5600 prepared mustards from over 70 countries. The museum became the sponsor of National Mustard Day in 1991 which sees events taking place raising thousands of dollars for a local charity. \nWhat better reason to hold a National Mustard Day event? Why not make some hotdogs\, smother them in your favourite mustard and ask people to contribute to your local charity? \nWhen is National Mustard Day 2026?\n\n\n\nYear\nDate\n\n\n\n\n2026\n1 August\n\n\n2027\nTBC\n\n\n2028\nTBC\n\n\n\nGet the 2026 ToolkitEvery awareness day in 2026 — spreadsheet\, PDF calendars\, iCal feed and unlimited reading.
