What is Black Maternal Mental Health Week?
Black Maternal Mental Health Week UK is an annual event dedicated to raising awareness about the mental health challenges faced by Black mothers.
Coordinated by The Motherhood Group, Black Maternal Mental Health Week is a crucial initiative aimed at transforming and advancing change in the mental well-being of Black mothers and their children. This awareness week sheds light on the disparities in mental health outcomes among Black mothers and the urgent need for action. By exploring the societal, historical, and systemic factors contributing to these disparities, we can develop targeted interventions and support systems to drive change.
Recognised nationally, this initiative aims to promote education, advocacy, and support for Black women during their pregnancy and postpartum journey. By shedding light on the unique mental health disparities experienced by this community, the week-long campaign strives to foster understanding and drive positive change in maternal healthcare practices.
It will serve as a crucial platform to advocate for the mental well-being of Black mothers, bringing attention to the challenges they face and promoting empowerment through connection. By participating and supporting this initiative, individuals can contribute to positive change and work towards a future where all mothers receive the mental health support they deserve.
Each year will feature a different theme. This year’s theme is “Transforming and Advancing Change” and you can find out more by visiting www.

How to get involved in Black Maternal Maternal Health Week 2026
Black Maternal Mental Health Week 2026 coordinated by The Motherhood Group is a crucial initiative aimed at transforming and advancing change in the mental well-being of Black mothers and their children. This awareness week sheds light on the disparities in mental health outcomes among Black mothers and the urgent need for action. By exploring the societal, historical, and systemic factors contributing to these disparities, we can develop targeted interventions and support systems to drive change.
Throughout this Black Maternal Mental Health Week, The Motherhood Group are asking us to focus on breaking the silence surrounding mental health stigma within the Black community and addressing barriers to accessing support. By fostering open conversations and community-based initiatives, we can encourage Black mothers to seek help when needed. Birth trauma, a significant issue impacting Black mothers’ mental health, will be addressed, emphasising strategies for healing and recovery.
The inaugural Black Child Mental Health Day will highlight the importance of nurturing the next generation’s mental well-being, as a mother’s mental health directly influences her child’s well-being. Building strong support networks within the Black community and through allyship will be emphasised, promoting the power of community in advancing change.
As we reflect on the journey and key learnings from the awareness week, we will maintain momentum and drive ongoing efforts to support Black maternal mental health. The week will culminate in a focus on strategies for systemic change and empowerment, discussing policy reforms, increased funding, and culturally sensitive care.
By transforming the conversation and advancing change, Black Maternal Mental Health Week 2026 aims to improve mental health outcomes for Black mothers and their children. Through collective action, self-advocacy, and collaboration, we can create a future where Black mothers and children thrive, both mentally and emotionally.
