National Brush Day is held in the United States on November 1. This observance focuses on raising awareness about the importance of children’s oral health. National Brush Day was first observed in 2013. The date of November 1 was chosen because it is the day after Halloween. On Halloween, children get many sweet treats during trick-or-treating. Frequent consumption of sugary foods is the number one cause of tooth decay which is one of the most common chronic childhood diseases in the U.S. National Brush Day began as an extension of the Kid’s Healthy Mouths PSA campaign launched by the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Health Lives and the Ad Council. The campaign is designed to encourage parents to make sure their children brush their teeth for at least two minutes, two times a day. Though this task seems easy enough, many kids refuse to brush their teeth even for two minutes because they get bored quickly. To help parents, the PSAs provide funny two-minute videos that can distract children while brushing. It is important to keep in mind that good tooth-brushing habits help prevent severe oral pain and many tooth disorders as well as significantly improve children’s dental health.
