National Maritime Day in the USA is celebrated annually on May 22.
The holiday was created to recognize the importance of maritime industry. The holiday was created by the U.S. Congress on May 20, 1933, and that year it was observed for the first time. Congress has chosen May 22 as the date for the holiday, as far as on this day the American steamship Savannah set sail from Savannah, Georgia in 1819.

That was the first ever transoceanic voyage under steam power.National Maritime Day also recognizes America’s Merchant Marine and all its great contributions and sacrifices for development of the country. All ships and seafarers, that were of great importance in the country’s history, are acknowledged on this day.Different ceremonies, services and celebrations are held around the country to give recognition to men and women that maritime depends on.

Every family can participate in celebrations or go on a picnic and have a boat tour. The main ceremony is held in Washington, D.C. at the Department of Transportation headquarters.
