What is Sepsis in Leukaemia Awareness Day?
Sepsis in Leukaemia Awareness Day is a dedicated initiative to raise awareness about infections in Leukaemia patients undergoing chemotherapy, and highlight the ongoing dangers of infection and it’s systemic effects, even when the leukaemia is in remission.
This day is an opportunity for patients and families to share their stories.
What we hope to achieve?
Many researchers in the world are focusing on the cure for leukaemia, either as a treatment or as preventative measures. Yet there seems to be an unmet clinical need in managing the effects of the chemotherapies for leukaemia, which are designed to obliterate a patients total immune system, with the goal of killing leukaemia cells too.
There is however, very little research focused on how to best manage these patients whilst they have no immune system. Much of the management is carried out through prophylactic antibiotic treatment. However, this can lead to antibiotic resistance and increase the risk of sepsis and septic shock.
By raising awareness, we hope to encourage donations to charities which fund such research – which is currently a largely under-funded area of research.
How to get involved?
To get involved in this year’s Sepsis in Leukaemia Awareness Day you can;
- Share our posts across your social media channels
- Participate in events, or organise events to raise money for research into sepsis in Leukaemia. We encourage schools to hold events allowing children to wear odd teal and green socks.
- Donate
- Wear the Teal and Green ribbon / wristband to show your support
