How to Celebrate National Peanut Butter Cookie Day
National Peanut Butter Cookie Day is celebrated every year on 12 June, honouring the dense, nutty cookie with its signature crisscross fork pattern. In 2026 it falls on Friday, 12 June. The day invites peanut butter and cookie lovers across the United States to bake a batch, share them, and enjoy a sweet classic.
This is a day made for baking, so the best way to take part is with a tray of warm cookies. Here are eight ways to join in.
- Bake the three-ingredient classic – Combine one cup of peanut butter, one cup of sugar and one egg, mix until smooth, and you have a flourless dough ready to bake. It makes around 15 to 18 cookies.
- Make the fork marks – Roll the dough into balls, then press a fork on top, turn it 90 degrees and press again to create the famous crisscross pattern. Dip the fork in sugar first to stop it sticking.
- Get the bake right – Bake at around 175C (350F) for 10 to 12 minutes for soft centres and golden edges.
- Try crunchy versus smooth – Bake one batch with smooth peanut butter and one with crunchy to settle the eternal debate over which makes the better cookie.
- Add a twist – Press a chocolate kiss into the centre, fold in chocolate chips, or sandwich two cookies with jam for a peanut butter and jelly treat.
- Share a batch – Take cookies to work, school or a neighbour. Few things spread goodwill faster than a plate of homemade cookies.
- Bake with children – The simple dough and the fun of pressing fork marks make this an easy recipe for young bakers.
- Pair with a cold glass of milk – The traditional accompaniment that cuts through the richness of the peanut butter.

The History of National Peanut Butter Cookie Day
The exact origin of the day itself is not documented, but the history of the cookie is well recorded. The peanut was championed in the early 20th century by George Washington Carver, the agricultural educator who compiled 105 peanut recipes in his 1916 bulletin, “How to Grow the Peanut and 105 Ways of Preparing it for Human Consumption.” Peanut butter cookies were not among those recipes, however, as peanut butter was not commonly listed as a baking ingredient until the early 1920s.
Peanut butter reached store shelves around 1920, and home bakers across America quickly began adding it to cookies. The defining detail arrived in 1932, when the Schenectady Gazette published a recipe calling for the crisscrossed fork marks on top. The technique was practical as well as decorative: peanut butter dough is very dense, and pressing it flat with a fork helps the cookies bake evenly. The pattern stuck, and today the fork mark is instantly recognisable as the sign of a peanut butter cookie.
