In response, he helped develop a mouthguard designed to slowly release electrolytes, keeping athletes hydrated through training and competition.
To commemorate his legacy and the cause he championed, the day was set on 23 June, the anniversary of his death. On 21 June 2016 the registrar at the National Day Calendar formally proclaimed National Hydration Day to be observed annually on that date.
