Pride Month is the month each June when lesbian, gay, bi, trans and queer people and their allies mark the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall uprising in New York, celebrate LGBTQ+ lives and press for equality. It is not run by a single organisation. In the UK the charity Stonewall, founded in 1989 to fight the Section 28 law, is the most prominent national voice, and it counted more than 270 separate Pride events across the UK in 2026. Each city’s Pride is organised locally, by its own community group or company.

June is the same everywhere, in the UK and the US alike. Many of the biggest UK parades fall outside June, in July and August, so the month is really the start of a Pride season rather than the whole of it. There is no single official Pride Month theme; each organiser sets its own.

Pride began as a protest and still is one, but over five decades it has also become a festival. A typical UK Pride has a parade or march through the town centre, a stage with music and speakers, charity and support-group stalls, and smaller events through the week such as talks, screenings and family picnics. Trans Pride and UK Black Pride have grown up alongside the main city events.

Because there is no national body for Pride, local organisers publish parade dates, routes and tickets. Stonewall, which took its name from the Stonewall Inn, runs national campaigns, advises employers and schools, and attends several of the larger Prides each year. Its history page records the campaigns that followed its founding: an equal age of consent in 2001, the repeal of Section 28 in England and Wales in 2003 and equal marriage in England and Wales in 2013, Scotland in 2014 and Northern Ireland in 2020.

Why Pride is in June: the history

In the early hours of 28 June 1969, New York police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in Greenwich Village. Customers and local people fought back, and the confrontation turned into a week of protests. Lesbians and trans women of colour were among the key figures. The London Museum describes how the uprising changed public discussion of LGBTQ+ activism and prompted marches to mark its anniversary, which is why Pride sits in June.

Two British activists back from the United States, Aubrey Walter and Bob Mellors, formed the London Gay Liberation Front at the London School of Economics in 1970. On Saturday 1 July 1972, the nearest Saturday to the Stonewall anniversary, the GLF and the Campaign for Homosexual Equality led an estimated 2,000 people on a carnival parade of protest from Trafalgar Square to Hyde Park. It was the UK’s first Pride march. Pride in London traces its own parade directly back to that day.

UK Pride events: London, Brighton and Manchester

Pride in London. The capital’s parade is the largest in the UK. The organisers’ site, prideinlondon.org, states that the event returns on 3 July 2027. The parade starts at Hyde Park Corner, follows Piccadilly to Piccadilly Circus, heads down Haymarket past Trafalgar Square and finishes on Whitehall, with stages and events across central London through the day. Watching from the route is free.

Brighton & Hove Pride. Run by Brighton Pride CIC, this is a full weekend on the south coast with a community parade through the city, the ticketed Pride on the Park concert, which the organisers describe as the official fundraiser for local LGBTQ+ community groups, and a street party. The 2026 festival took place on 1 and 2 August. Check brighton-pride.org for 2027 dates and tickets once they are announced.

Manchester Pride. Manchester’s festival is built around Canal Street and the Gay Village over the August bank holiday weekend. The 2026 festival ran from Friday 28 to Monday 31 August and included the parade through the city centre, the Gay Village Party and the Candlelit Vigil in Sackville Gardens, which closes the weekend with a moment of reflection and remembrance. See manchesterpride.com for 2027 arrangements.

Beyond these three, most UK cities and many towns hold their own Pride, including Pride Cymru in Cardiff, Pride Edinburgh and Belfast Pride. Most publish dates between January and April.

How to take part

You do not need to be LGBTQ+ to take part, or to go to a parade. Ways to mark the month:

  • Go to your nearest Pride as a spectator, a marcher with a community group, or a volunteer steward.
  • Give to or volunteer with an LGBTQ+ charity, hospice or youth group in your area, rather than only buying rainbow merchandise.
  • Learn some of the history. The London Museum and the National Archives hold free online material on the early marches.
  • Check your own assumptions. Not assuming the gender of a colleague’s partner costs nothing.

Pride Month at work

The most useful workplace programmes are the ones that outlast June. Stonewall’s Proud Employers programme offers training, consultancy and an accreditation framework for organisations that want to go beyond a logo change. Ideas that work at any size of organisation:

  • Ask your LGBTQ+ staff network what it wants, and fund it. If there is no network, start one with a named senior sponsor.
  • Run a lunchtime talk with staff who are willing to share their experience, or an external speaker.
  • Review the policies that matter in practice: parental leave wording that covers same-sex parents, trans-inclusive dress codes, and a clear route for reporting harassment.
  • Sponsor or march with a local Pride as a workplace group, and pay for staff tickets or travel.
  • Pick one measurable commitment for the year, such as inclusion training for line managers, and report on it next June.

Avoid changing your logo to a rainbow while doing nothing else. Staff and customers notice, and the term for it, rainbow-washing, is widely understood.
