What is the 2026 campaign?

UNAIDS’ 2026 campaign uses the message Ending AIDS starts with access. It focuses on access to services, rights, resources and political leadership. Use its current materials when sharing this theme rather than carrying forward another year’s slogan.

The World Health Organization confirms 1 December as the annual international date. Local events and fundraising activities may take place on other days, so check the relevant organiser’s arrangements.

World AIDS Day is on Tuesday 1 December 2026. It is a time to stand with people living with HIV, challenge stigma, remember people who have died and support access to prevention, treatment and care.

HIV and AIDS are different

HIV is a virus that affects the immune system. Without effective treatment it can progress to advanced HIV, also known as AIDS. A person living with HIV does not necessarily have AIDS. The NHS explanation of HIV provides information about testing, treatment and living with HIV.

HIV is not passed on through everyday contact such as hugging or sharing cups and cutlery. Accurate information matters because myths can affect how people are treated at work, in healthcare and in their communities.

Ways to take part

  • Share a reliable resource. Choose one clear message from UNAIDS or a recognised HIV organisation and link to the full explanation.
  • Wear a red ribbon. Use it as a sign of support for people living with HIV, with information explaining its meaning.
  • Support a named organisation. In the UK, National AIDS Trust provides HIV information, rights resources and ways to support its work. Use the charity’s current fundraising arrangements.
  • Review everyday practice. A workplace or community group can check whether its information and activities challenge stigma and respect confidentiality.

Respect people’s choices

No one should have to disclose their HIV status to participate in an event. Ask permission before using a personal story, name or photograph, and do not assume that someone wearing a ribbon is living with HIV.

A useful discussion can examine a fictional example of an inaccurate claim, then use a trusted resource to correct it. Keep questions about an individual’s health private. If you want advice about testing, treatment or a possible exposure, contact a sexual health service or healthcare professional; you do not need to wait for World AIDS Day.
