Singles Awareness Day, often shortened to SAD, is a counterweight to Valentine’s Day. Where 14 February is built around couples, 15 February turns the attention to everyone else: people who are single by choice, people who are dating, people who have been widowed or divorced, and people who simply do not mark Valentine’s Day at all.
The acronym is a joke at its own expense. The day is meant to be anything but sad. For some it is a chance to treat themselves; for others it is an evening with friends, or a reminder to look out for people who might find mid-February hard.
Why it matters
Valentine’s Day can make it look as though everyone is part of a couple. The numbers tell a different story. According to the Office for National Statistics, 8.4 million people lived alone in the UK in 2024, up from 7.6 million in 2014. That is 12.5% of people living in households, and around half of them (51.1%) were aged 65 or over.
Living alone is not the same as being single, but those figures are a useful reminder that a large share of the population sits outside the couple-shaped picture of Valentine’s week. Singles Awareness Day is a friendly way of saying that is fine, and of making sure nobody is left out.
The history of Singles Awareness Day
No one has reliably documented who started Singles Awareness Day or when. It appears to have grown informally, and later on social media, as a humorous response to the commercial focus on couples around Valentine’s Day. There is no organising body and no official status in the UK or anywhere else.
It should not be confused with Singles’ Day on 11 November. That day began in 1993, when a group of male students at Nanjing University in China decided to celebrate being single, choosing 11/11 for its row of ones. It has since grown into a major online shopping event.
How to mark Singles Awareness Day
- Plan something with friends. A meal, a film night or a walk with the people who matter to you is the whole point of the day.
- Treat yourself. Book the restaurant table for one, buy the flowers yourself, or take the afternoon to do something you enjoy.
- Check in on someone. With so many older people living alone, a phone call or visit to a neighbour or relative can mean a lot in the middle of a week that is all about couples.
- Volunteer. Give an evening to a local charity or community group.
- At work, keep it inclusive. If your team marks Valentine’s Day, make sure socials and marketing do not assume everyone is in a relationship. A friends-themed event on 15 February can include everyone.
