The Story Behind Jan Hus Day
Jan Hus was born in Bohemia around 1369 and rose to become a priest, a master at Charles University in Prague, and one of the most influential religious thinkers of his age. Drawing on the writings of the English theologian John Wycliffe, which he helped translate into Czech, Hus argued for sweeping reform of the Catholic Church. He called for sermons and scripture in the Czech language rather than Latin, for the Church to confine itself to spiritual matters, and for an end to the sale of indulgences, by which the Church raised money in exchange for the supposed forgiveness of sins.
His outspoken criticism put him on a collision course with Church authority. In 1412 he was excommunicated for insubordination, yet he continued to preach and write. In 1414 he was promised safe passage to the Council of Constance, a gathering convened to resolve divisions within the Church. Once there, however, he was detained, tried, and ordered to renounce his teachings. Hus refused to recant beliefs he had not been shown to be wrong, and on 6 July 1415 he was condemned as a heretic and burned at the stake.
His death did not silence his cause. It inflamed it. His followers, known as the Hussites, rose up in protest, and between 1420 and 1431 they defeated five consecutive papal crusades launched against them in what became known as the Hussite Wars. A little over a century later, in 1517, Martin Luther nailed his ninety-five theses to a church door in Wittenberg, an act that echoed many of Hus’s own demands and that Luther himself acknowledged owed a debt to the Bohemian reformer.
In 1915, on the 500th anniversary of his death, a vast memorial to Jan Hus was unveiled in Prague’s Old Town Square. Designed by the sculptor Ladislav Šaloun and funded entirely by public donations, it depicts victorious Hussite warriors, exiled Protestants, and a young mother symbolising national rebirth. Because Prague was then under Habsburg Catholic rule, the authorities refused to hold an official ceremony, so citizens quietly covered the monument in flowers in protest.
