What is Great Big Green Week?

The campaign is built around people doing something together where they live, learn or work. The organiser’s examples include repair cafés, clothes swaps, litter picks, nature walks, community lunches, talks and film screenings. A small activity can sit alongside a town-wide programme.

The Climate Coalition reports that more than 1.6 million people took part in over 10,000 events in 2026. For a first-time organiser, the useful starting point is a manageable local idea: what would help people connect with the nature around them, share a skill or make better use of something they already own?

Great Big Green Week 2027 takes place from 5 to 13 June across the UK. Organised by The Climate Coalition, the campaign brings communities together for local activities connected with climate and nature. A school, workplace, neighbourhood group, place of worship or family can take part.

When is Great Big Green Week?

The organiser has confirmed 5–13 June 2027. The campaign spans nine days, giving people two weekends as well as weekdays in which to arrange activities. The official participation page says its resources and training are being updated for 2027.

Great Big Green Week includes World Environment Day on 5 June, making it a useful point in the calendar for a local project that continues beyond a single day.

Ideas for schools and workplaces

A school eco committee could choose one project with the site team, such as reviewing a green space, organising a book swap or producing a map of local nature. Give pupils a defined role and a way to explain the project to other classes. An assembly can introduce the activity, with classroom time used to observe, measure or reflect on it.

Workplaces can begin with a staff-led event rather than a large programme. A lunchtime skills session, a reusable-item swap or a team visit to an existing community event may be easier to deliver well. Agree who is organising it, what time or budget is available and how colleagues with different working patterns can take part.

Choose an activity that suits your group

  • Run a swap. Choose a clear category, such as books, plants or usable clothes. Explain the condition of items people can bring and agree what will happen to anything left at the end.
  • Explore a local place. Ask someone with relevant local knowledge to lead an accessible walk. Give people information about the route, distance, surfaces and any places to rest before they decide to join.
  • Share practical skills. Invite experienced volunteers to demonstrate a suitable repair or reuse activity. Keep the session within their expertise and the venue’s arrangements.
  • Make room for discussion. Host a film or talk with permission from the rights holder, then allow time for people to discuss a realistic local next step.

Make the planning practical

Write down the purpose, audience, venue and person responsible. Keep the invitation specific about cost, access, timings and what participants need to bring. Check any permission needed for a shared or public space. A clear plan helps other volunteers decide where they can contribute.

Afterwards, record what happened and ask the group what should continue. Useful outcomes might be a new volunteer connection, a repeat swap or a small change in how a shared space is managed.
