What is Movember?

Movember is the annual November fundraiser run by the Movember charity. It supports work on mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. The moustache is its best-known symbol, but there are several ways to participate without growing one.

November is also widely described as Men’s Health Awareness Month. Movember is a specific charity campaign within that wider conversation. When raising money, name the beneficiary clearly rather than assuming that every November men’s health activity supports the same organisation.

What is the Movember 2026 theme?

The current campaign website uses “Growmitment” to describe a commitment to men’s health. We have not treated that wording as a separately announced annual 2026 theme. Use the charity’s current campaign assets for public materials, rather than copying an older slogan and attaching a new year.

When is Movember 2026?

The campaign covers 1–30 November 2026. An individual fundraiser, workplace event or community challenge can take place during the month; give its own date and finish time when inviting people.

International Men’s Day, on 19 November, is a separate observance. It can provide a useful point for a discussion or progress update, but it does not replace Movember’s month-long dates.

How to take part in Movember

The official Movember participation page offers four main fundraising routes:

  • Grow: grow a moustache and use it to start conversations about men’s health.
  • Move: take on the campaign’s 60km running or walking challenge during November.
  • Host: organise a social or fundraising event.
  • Mo Your Own Way: create a challenge that suits your interests and circumstances.

You can also support a fundraiser or donate directly. Use the official registration route to create a fundraising profile and check the current rules for your chosen challenge. Participation does not require everyone to attempt the same activity.

Movember ideas for workplaces

Movember’s workplace guidance explains how to create a team and find its resource hub. The following is a suggested planning approach for an employer or staff group.

Choose a clear purpose

Decide whether the activity is principally a fundraiser, a health information session or a chance to connect. It can serve more than one purpose, but invitations should explain what people can expect. A fundraising total alone does not tell you whether staff know where to find support.

Offer more than one way to join

Provide an option that does not depend on facial hair, fitness, spending money or sharing personal experiences. Someone might organise a lunchtime conversation, help with publicity or attend an informal gathering. Keep donations and participation voluntary.

Make the logistics straightforward

For a team challenge, publish the registration link, contact person, activity dates and donation destination together. If the employer is matching donations, confirm the limit and process before advertising it. Provide an accessible alternative to any physical activity and include remote colleagues.

Keep health conversations respectful

Use a private route for personal questions. Do not ask colleagues to describe a diagnosis, bereavement or mental health concern in front of a group. A light-hearted fundraiser can sit alongside a serious subject without making someone’s experience the entertainment.

Planning the end of November

Before launching, book a short follow-up for the end of the month. Thank participants, state what was raised through the official page and record any practical improvement the workplace has agreed. Keep useful resources available afterwards so a November event leads to something people can still use in December.

How did Movember begin?

Movember’s own account of its beginnings traces the idea to Melbourne in 2003, when Travis Garone and Luke Slattery persuaded 30 men to grow moustaches. The campaign subsequently developed into an international fundraising movement. Its current work and funding should be checked through the charity’s reports, rather than an undated lifetime fundraising figure.

Useful resources beyond the fundraiser

Movember Conversations offers practice for conversations with someone who may be struggling. It is a resource for learning how to listen and respond, rather than a replacement for professional support.

For a workplace activity, include the organisation’s confidential support routes and time to explain how to use them. If inviting a speaker, agree the subject and boundaries in advance. Clinical questions, screening decisions and symptoms need appropriate health advice; a campaign session should not provide a diagnosis.
