About National Bison Day (United States)

National Bison Day falls on Saturday 7 November 2026 in the United States. The National Park Service gives the annual date as the first Saturday in November.

The day is an opportunity to learn about the American bison, the people connected to it and the work of restoring herds. A national calendar date does not mean that every park or conservation organisation has an event that day; check local programmes separately.

What does the day recognise?

Bison have ecological, cultural and historical importance across North America. The National Park Service describes their significance to many Native Nations and the devastating effects of nineteenth-century bison destruction on Indigenous communities.

National Bison Day is a US observance, even though the animal’s range and relationships extend across national borders. It is also separate from the designation of the bison as the US national mammal, which took place in 2016.

Learn from Tribal-led restoration

The InterTribal Buffalo Council supports the return of buffalo herds to Tribal lands. Its own account explains the cultural, ecological and economic purposes of that work.

Including Tribal-led sources changes the emphasis from a simple story of an animal being “saved” to the continuing work of rebuilding relationships, herds and opportunities for communities. Use the names and explanations that the participating Nations and organisations provide, rather than presenting all Indigenous experiences as the same.

A useful activity for schools or community groups

Compare a National Park Service resource with the Buffalo Council’s account of its work. Give each participant one question to explore:

  • What does each organisation say it is trying to achieve?
  • Who makes decisions about the herds described?
  • How do the sources explain the relationship between people, animals and land?
  • Which questions would need a more local or detailed source?

Finish with a short source list and a statement of what the group learned. If you use an image, check its caption, credit and reuse conditions. Avoid turning cultural practices into a classroom imitation without appropriate guidance.

If you visit a place with bison

Plan the visit using the park’s or reserve’s current information. Check opening arrangements, road conditions, access and wildlife-viewing rules before travelling.

The National Park Service warns that bison are wild and unpredictable. Keep well back, follow the site’s required distances and never approach for a close-up photograph. Give animals space even when they appear calm, and keep to authorised viewing areas.

Supporting the work

If you want to contribute, explore a conservation or Tribal organisation’s own description of its programmes and needs. Follow its stated participation or donation route rather than assuming every herd welcomes visits, volunteers or deliveries.

For a November post, share one named project and a useful source. The optional hashtag #NationalBisonDay identifies the occasion, but the project and its context should remain the focus.
