What is National Career Development Month?

National Career Development Month is a US observance promoted by the National Career Development Association, NCDA. It encourages career-related learning, reflection and activities for students and adults.

Career development can involve exploring an option, identifying skills, returning to learning or planning a change. An activity does not have to end with a job application. It can help someone work out the next useful question to ask.

What is the current NCDA contest theme?

NCDA’s 61st annual Poetry and Art Contest uses “Charting the Unknown: Mapping Your Future – Paths, Pivots, and Possibilities”. The campaign page directs entrants to the 2026–2027 brochure for divisions, requirements, deadlines and submission details.

This is the contest theme, rather than a universal requirement for every career development activity. Check the current brochure before entering, particularly where a state or local organiser has a separate process. A 2025–2026 entry form is not the current 2026–2027 form.

When is National Career Development Month 2026?

The month runs from Sunday 1 to Monday 30 November 2026. NCDA’s current campaign page also lists:

  • National Career Development Week: 16–20 November 2026.
  • National Career Development Day: Wednesday 18 November 2026.

These are the NCDA observance dates. They should not be presented as dates set by a UK careers service or assumed to be a mandatory programme for every school or employer.

Ideas for schools and colleges

Compare two routes into an area of work

Ask learners to investigate a career area and identify two possible entry routes. Have them note the source, requirements, costs and questions they still need to answer. Encourage them to distinguish a typical route from a rule that applies to every employer.

Interview someone about a career change

Prepare questions about learning, decisions and unexpected changes. Agree what can be recorded or shared before the interview. A useful account includes uncertainty and transferable skills, rather than presenting one person’s path as a guaranteed formula.

Create a map of interests and possibilities

Invite learners to connect interests, activities and skills with areas they want to explore. Let them add several possibilities and revise the map. Participation should not depend on already knowing a preferred job or having family contacts in a profession.

Ideas for employers

Use the month to make development opportunities clearer. Staff might benefit from knowing how to request a conversation, find internal vacancies or understand the skills needed for a different role.

  1. Offer a focused development conversation. Ask what someone would like to learn and what support would help.
  2. Explain an existing process. Publish clear information about training requests, mentoring or internal applications.
  3. Share realistic role information. Describe responsibilities and the evidence needed for progression, without promising a promotion.
  4. Choose one next step. Agree an action, the time needed and when to review it.

Include part-time, remote and shift-working staff. An optional career activity should fit alongside work, with clear expectations about any time or funding available.

A simple personal career review

Write down one area you want to explore, one skill you can demonstrate and one question you need help answering. Choose a modest research task, such as reading a current job profile or asking about a course’s entry requirements.

Record where the information came from and what may need checking again. Before spending money on training, confirm the provider, qualification, costs and relevance to the route you are considering.

Resources for UK readers

The US observance can be a prompt for a local activity, while careers information should match the person’s location. In England, the National Careers Service provides careers information, job profiles and advice. Its website also links to the separate services for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Use current local information for qualifications, apprenticeships and funding. A US contest or career description should not be assumed to use the same education system or application arrangements as the UK.
