History of National Sports Day

National Sports Day was added to India’s list of observances for the first time in 2012, chosen to coincide with the birthday of Major Dhyan Chand. The decision recognised both the player’s unmatched contribution to Indian hockey and the broader value of promoting sport nationwide.

Major Dhyan Chand, born Dhyan Singh, rose to prominence in the years before Indian independence. He earned the name Dhyan Chand because he practised his hockey at night under the moonlight, “chand” meaning moon in Hindi, after spending his days on regimental duty in the army. He was central to the Indian hockey team that completed its first hat-trick of Olympic gold medals at the 1928, 1932 and 1936 Summer Olympics.

His career spanned from 1926 to 1948, during which he played 185 matches for India and scored more than 400 goals. He retired as a Major in the Punjab Regiment of the Indian Army in 1956 and was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the country’s third-highest civilian honour, the same year. In 2021, the government renamed its highest sporting award the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in his memory, further cementing his place at the centre of National Sports Day.
