About Palio Horse Race in Siena
The Palio di Siena is a bareback horse race held twice each summer in the medieval Italian city of Siena. The first race of 2026, known as the Palio di Provenzano, takes place on Wednesday, 2 July 2026 in the Piazza del Campo. Far more than a sporting contest, it is a fiercely contested ritual that binds Siena’s historic neighbourhoods, or contrade, in a tradition stretching back centuries.
The Story Behind the Palio di Siena
The roots of the Palio reach deep into the Middle Ages. Siena was a wealthy and independent republic, and its citizens organised public games and contests to mark religious festivals and civic occasions. Early competitions included bullfights, boxing, and races on buffalo and donkeys. By the seventeenth century the city had settled on horse racing around the Piazza del Campo as the definitive spectacle, with the first modern Palio recorded in 1633 in honour of the Madonna of Provenzano.
The race is run by Siena’s contrade, the historic districts into which the city is divided. There were once as many as 59 of these communities, but the number was fixed at 17 in 1729 by a decree of Violante of Bavaria, the Governess of Siena. Each contrada has its own emblem, colours, patron saint, and rivalries, and membership is a matter of birth and lifelong loyalty. A Sienese child is often baptised twice, once in church and once in the fountain of their contrada.
Two Palios are held annually: the Palio di Provenzano on 2 July, dedicated to the Madonna of Provenzano, and the Palio dell’Assunta on 16 August, honouring the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Only ten of the seventeen contrade run in each race. The seven that did not compete in the equivalent race the previous year are guaranteed a place, and the remaining three are drawn by lot. Over the centuries the race has survived wars, plagues, and political upheaval, cancelled only in exceptional circumstances such as the two World Wars and the global pandemic of 2020.

The summer Palio season opens with the Palio di Provenzano on Wednesday, 2 July 2026, followed by the Palio dell’Assunta on Sunday, 16 August 2026. Both races take place in the Piazza del Campo, the shell-shaped central square of Siena in Tuscany. The build-up spans four days of trial races and ceremonies, beginning with the drawing and assignment of horses on 29 June. The race itself is run in the late afternoon, with the horses leaving the starting area after a lengthy procession.
Traditions and Customs
The Palio is wrapped in ceremony, and much of its drama unfolds long before the horses run.
- The Tratta – Horses are assigned to the competing contrade by lot a few days before the race. Because riders cannot choose their mounts, fortune plays an enormous role, and a strong horse can transform a district’s hopes overnight.
- The Corteo Storico – A magnificent historical procession of more than 600 participants in Renaissance costume parades around the square before the race, complete with flag-throwers, drummers, and representatives of each contrada.
- Blessing of the horse – Each horse is taken into its contrada’s church to be blessed by a priest. If the animal leaves droppings, it is considered a sign of good luck.
- The fantini – The jockeys ride bareback and may strike rival horses and riders with a whip made of dried ox sinew, called a nerbo. Alliances and bribes between contrade are an accepted part of the tactical battle.
- The Drappellone – The prize is not money but a hand-painted silk banner, commissioned each year from a different artist and treasured by the winning contrada for generations.
