History of the Event
Read Across America Day was established by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1997 with the goal of promoting reading among children. Coinciding with Dr. Seuss’s birthday, the day naturally evolved to also celebrate the legacy of this beloved children’s author. His whimsical tales and rhymes have since become central to the festivities, although the day encourages reading of all kinds.

For schools: assembly, classroom and PTA ideas
Read Across America Day is an NEA program, so in school it is usually owned by the librarian or media specialist, the reading coach and the PTA reading committee. It falls on March 2 each year and many schools stretch it into a full reading week, so plan in January: pick your read-aloud titles, line up guest readers and let families know about any dress-up days.
- Assembly: a guest reader assembly with the principal, a local author, athletes or community leaders reading aloud to the whole school.
- Assembly: a “read across our school” reveal announcing the week’s reading goal and how classes will track it.
- Classroom: the NEA’s monthly themed book lists and activities, which highlight diverse authors and stories for every grade band.
- Classroom: buddy reading, pairing older and younger students for 20 minutes of shared reading.
