About World Vegan Day

World Vegan Day 2026 is Sunday 1 November. It marks the beginning of World Vegan Month and offers a focus for learning about veganism, trying a recipe or exploring the work of The Vegan Society.

Planning a workplace or community tasting

  • Choose a manageable menu. A small selection with clear ingredient information is easier to organise than a large unlabelled buffet.
  • Ask about dietary requirements. Vegan food is not automatically free from allergens. The Food Standards Agency explains the distinction.
  • Make taking part optional. Offer ways to join the conversation without eating or making a purchase.
  • Credit the recipe source. Link the original recipe rather than copying a whole collection into your own materials.
  • Explain any fundraising separately. Name the beneficiary and use its current instructions. An awareness meal does not have to involve a donation.

How did World Vegan Day begin?

The Vegan Society’s account says the day was created on 1 November 1994 to mark the organisation’s fiftieth anniversary. That is a documented origin, distinct from claims about unspecified ancient festivals or a newly announced annual theme.

The charity’s World Vegan Month page is a starting point for its current information. Check the date of a campaign announcement before reusing a previous year’s offers or wording.

Try one meal rather than an elaborate challenge

You could choose a familiar dish and explore a vegan version using a recipe from The Vegan Society’s recipe collection. Read the full method before shopping and check what you already have.

For a family or cookery group, our suggested activity is to compare two ways of preparing one meal component. For example, try different herbs in a bean-based filling or compare the texture of two sauces. Label the ingredients and let people choose whether to taste.

Keep the aim clear: learning about ingredients and cooking. One themed meal is not a test of someone’s identity, ethics or health.

Keep claims specific

A campaign article should not promise that every vegan product is healthier or that every meal has the same environmental effect. If you share a comparison, explain what was measured and link to the evidence.

For individual nutrition or health questions, use suitable professional guidance rather than treating an awareness activity as a diet prescription.
