About Albanian Liberation Day
Albania’s Liberation Day is on 29 November, which falls on Sunday in 2026. It is the official anniversary commemorating liberation from Nazi German occupation in 1944, and is distinct from Flag and Independence Day on 28 November.
What does Liberation Day commemorate?
The observance concerns the end of the Second World War occupation and the role of the resistance. It should not be confused with Albania’s declaration of independence in 1912 or described as the founding date of its post-war government.
The history and political meaning of the anniversary are contested. The Institute for Democracy, Media and Culture’s research on media and memory examines how Albanian commemorations are represented and debated. An official calendar date does not mean that every Albanian family or political tradition interprets that history in the same way.
Holiday dates and days off in 2026
The Bank of Albania’s 2026 holiday schedule lists Flag and Independence Day on Saturday 28 November and Liberation Day on Sunday 29 November. Because both dates fall at the weekend, the bank also lists closures on Monday 30 November and Tuesday 1 December.
Keep the anniversary date separate from a substitute working-day closure. If planning a visit, appointment or payment, check the current arrangements of the organisation involved rather than assuming that every service follows the same opening pattern.
Learning about the anniversary
- Use a short timeline. Separate the 1912 independence declaration, the Second World War occupation, the 1944 liberation anniversary and subsequent political developments.
- Identify the source. A museum explanation, official speech, historical study and family recollection may offer different kinds of evidence and perspectives.
- Check current programmes. Look to the relevant museum, municipality or institution for actual event details. An annual holiday does not confirm a parade, concert or public invitation.
- Let people choose what to share. A community member may welcome a conversation, but should not be expected to represent all Albanian experiences.
For a classroom or community group
Compare two accounts of the same wartime event and note who produced each one, when and for what audience. Ask what both agree on and where their interpretations differ. Distinguish that exercise from deciding which days an institution closes.
If including personal memories, get permission before recording or publishing them. A useful discussion can recognise remembrance and disagreement together, without inventing a single national story of celebration.
