About Cyber Monday
Cyber Monday falls on Monday 30 November 2026, after Black Friday on 27 November. It is a retail marketing date, with individual shops deciding their own offers, start times and sale periods. A discount label does not establish that a purchase is good value.
Where did Cyber Monday come from?
The term was introduced in 2005 by Shop.org, then the National Retail Federation’s digital retail division. Georgetown University’s interview with Ellen Davis, who helped create the name, describes the team noticing increased online shopping on the Monday after US Thanksgiving.
The US federal calendar places Thanksgiving on 26 November in 2026; Cyber Monday follows on 30 November. It is not a public holiday or a guarantee that every retailer’s promotion lasts exactly 24 hours.
Check the purchase before the discount
- Start with a need and a limit. Write down the item, specification and maximum total you are comfortable paying.
- Compare the exact product. Check model numbers, capacity, condition, included accessories and warranty terms.
- Look beyond the percentage. Compare current prices and any available price history. A reduction from a displayed reference price does not prove that the deal is the lowest available.
- Add the full cost. Include delivery, required accessories, subscriptions and any recurring charges before deciding.
Check the seller and the return arrangements
The National Cyber Security Centre’s shopping guidance explains how to check a shop and avoid suspicious links. Visit the retailer through a route you trust rather than an unexpected message advertising a dramatic discount.
For many goods bought online from a trader, UK distance-selling rules allow customers to notify cancellation within 14 days of receiving the item, with another 14 days to return it. Exceptions apply. Read the government’s returns guidance and the seller’s arrangements, especially for personalised items or goods bought from a private seller.
Keep historical figures in context
Adobe reported US online spending of $14.25 billion for Cyber Monday 2025. That is a dated US market estimate, not a prediction for 2026 or evidence that an individual item is worth buying.
Keep the order confirmation and a copy of the offer you relied on. If the price, seller or terms are unclear, leave time to check them. Deciding not to buy is a reasonable outcome.
