About Cap Classique Day

Cap Classique Day takes place on 1 September 2026, marking the first day of spring in the Southern Hemisphere and celebrating South Africa’s traditional-method sparkling wine. Launched in 2020 by the Cap Classique Producers Association, the day invites wine lovers around the world to raise a glass of Méthode Cap Classique and toast a category that has grown from a single estate into one of South Africa’s proudest exports.

How to Celebrate Cap Classique Day

Cap Classique Day is built for sharing, so the best way to mark it is with a bottle, good company, and a little curiosity about what makes these bubbles so special. Here are some ideas:

  • Open a bottle of Méthode Cap Classique – Seek out a South African sparkling wine from estates such as Simonsig, Graham Beck, Villiera, or Colmant. Chill it well and savour the fine, persistent bubbles that come from a second fermentation in the bottle.
  • Host a side-by-side tasting – Pour two or three different Cap Classiques together and compare them. A crisp Blanc de Blancs made from Chardonnay will taste noticeably different from a richer Pinot Noir-led cuvée, and tasting them together makes the differences easy to spot.
  • Pair it with food – Cap Classique’s bright acidity cuts through salty and fried dishes beautifully. Try it with fish and chips, fried chicken, salty crisps, oysters, or even creamy cheeses to see how the wine lifts each bite.
  • Support a smaller producer – More than 100 wineries now make Cap Classique, and many are family-run boutique cellars. Buying a bottle from a lesser-known label is a fine way to discover something new and back independent winemakers.
  • Visit the Cape Winelands – If you are in South Africa, book a cellar tour or tasting in Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, or Robertson. Many estates run special tastings and events on and around 1 September.
  • Learn the method – Read up on how the second fermentation works, why the wine spends at least 12 months ageing on its lees, and how riddling and disgorgement give Cap Classique its texture. A little knowledge makes the next sip far more rewarding.
  • Celebrate the start of spring – The date was chosen because 1 September is the first day of spring south of the equator. Take the cue to gather friends outdoors and welcome the new season with a sparkling toast.
  • Share your bottle online – Post a photo of your favourite Cap Classique and tag the producer. Spreading the word helps a relatively young celebration reach more wine lovers each year.

What is Cap Classique Day?

Cap Classique Day is an annual celebration of Méthode Cap Classique, the name given to South African sparkling wines made using the same traditional bottle-fermentation technique as Champagne. The day is organised by the Cap Classique Producers Association, the body that represents the country’s sparkling wine producers and sets the standards for the category. It is aimed at wine drinkers, restaurants, distributors, and producers alike, and is as much a celebration of craftsmanship as it is of the wine itself.

When is Cap Classique Day?

Cap Classique Day falls on Tuesday, 1 September 2026. The date is fixed and is observed on 1 September every year. It was deliberately chosen to coincide with the first day of spring in the Southern Hemisphere, since a glass of sparkling wine is one of the most fitting ways to welcome the warmer months in South Africa.

The History of Cap Classique Day

The story of Cap Classique begins in the late 1960s, when Frans Malan of Simonsig Estate in Stellenbosch travelled to France’s Champagne region. Inspired by the traditional method he saw there, he returned home determined to make a sparkling wine of the same quality. In 1971 he produced South Africa’s first traditional-method sparkling wine, and in 1973 he released it commercially as Kaapse Vonkel, meaning “Cape Sparkle”. It was the spark that lit an entire category.

For two decades, South African producers borrowed the French language to describe their wines. That changed in 1992, when the use of the term “Champagne” was prohibited for sparkling wines made outside the French Champagne region. South African producers needed a name of their own, and so “Méthode Cap Classique” was born, a nod to the Cape Winelands where the wine is made. That same year, the Cap Classique Producers Association was founded with 14 members to champion the category and protect its standards.

The association has grown to represent more than 100 producers, and the wines have earned a global reputation for quality and value. In 2021 the category celebrated its 50th anniversary, and a minimum of 12 months’ ageing on the lees became a legal requirement, cementing the commitment to quality. To give the category a dedicated moment in the calendar, the Cap Classique Producers Association launched Cap Classique Day in 2020, choosing the first day of spring so the celebration would always coincide with a fresh start.

Fun Facts About Cap Classique Day

  • The very first Cap Classique, Simonsig’s Kaapse Vonkel, was made in 1971 and released in 1973, making the category over 50 years old.
  • The name “Méthode Cap Classique” was only coined in 1992, after the term “Champagne” was banned for wines made outside the Champagne region.
  • The Cap Classique Producers Association grew from just 14 founding members in 1992 to more than 100 today.
  • Cap Classique uses the same classic grape varieties as Champagne, chiefly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, alongside South Africa’s signature Chenin Blanc.
  • Since 2021, every wine labelled Cap Classique must spend a minimum of 12 months ageing on its lees, the spent yeast that gives the wine its creamy texture and complexity.
  • The day is held on 1 September because it is the first day of spring in the Southern Hemisphere, a natural moment to celebrate with bubbles.

Why Cap Classique Day Matters

Cap Classique Day shines a deserved light on a category that is often overlooked next to Champagne, despite offering comparable quality at far friendlier prices. It supports South African winemakers, many of them small family estates, and celebrates decades of patient craftsmanship. For drinkers, the day is a gentle invitation to look beyond the familiar and discover a world-class sparkling wine with a distinctly South African character.
