About International ESG Day

International ESG Day is on Monday 30 November 2026. The ESG Institute presents it as an annual initiative for learning and practical action around environmental, social and governance issues, with participation open to organisations and individuals.

Who organises the day?

The ESG Institute’s current campaign page identifies the organisation as the creator, dates the initiative to 2023 and describes 2026 as its fourth edition. It offers activity registration and allows activities on 30 November or nearby dates.

This provides a named source for the occasion, replacing our previous unsupported story about an unnamed coalition. The organiser’s description establishes its own initiative; it does not establish endorsement by every investor, government or business.

What does ESG mean?

Environmental, social and governance are three broad groups of issues used in analysing organisations and investments. Environmental questions can concern emissions or biodiversity; social questions can concern working conditions or human rights; governance questions can concern board oversight and accountability.

The Principles for Responsible Investment’s introductory guide explains how such factors can feature in investment decisions and stewardship. Different approaches can use different objectives, data and measures. An ESG label alone does not explain an organisation’s performance or demonstrate a particular financial return.

A useful workplace activity

Choose one statement your organisation makes publicly, such as a waste-reduction commitment or a workforce-development goal. Use a short discussion to ask:

  • What does it cover? Define the activity, location and period so the claim has a clear boundary.
  • What is the evidence? Identify the data source, who maintains it and whether there are gaps.
  • What would show progress? Choose a measure that relates to the actual goal rather than a convenient headline.
  • Who follows up? Give the next action an owner and a date, then explain how the result will be reported.

Taking part without overstating the result

If using the campaign’s registration route, read the current terms and describe what your group actually plans to do. A participation certificate records involvement in an event; it should not be presented as an independent assessment of an organisation’s ESG performance.

For a school or community group, the same approach can work with a fictional company or a public report. Separate evidence, opinion and unanswered questions. The activity is most useful when it leads to a specific question or improvement, rather than a broad claim that a business is responsible in every respect.
