About National Canoe Day

National Canoe Day is celebrated every year on 26 June, honouring the canoe and the role it has played in the history, culture and landscapes of North America. In 2026 it falls on Friday, 26 June. Created by The Canadian Canoe Museum, the day invites people to get on the water, learn the canoe’s story and enjoy the simple pleasure of paddling.

How to Celebrate National Canoe Day

This is a day made for getting outdoors and onto the water. Here are plenty of ways to take part:

  • Go for a paddle – The simplest and best way to mark the day is to take a canoe out on a lake, river or quiet stretch of water with friends or family.
  • Visit The Canadian Canoe Museum – The museum in Peterborough, Ontario, traditionally celebrates the day with special activities, and admission has been free on 26 June in past years.
  • Try a voyageur canoe tour – The museum has offered guided tours in large voyageur canoes on Little Lake, letting you paddle as the fur traders once did.
  • Share a portage photo – Post a picture of yourself carrying your canoe with the hashtag #PortagePic and tag The Canadian Canoe Museum.
  • Learn a new paddling stroke – Use the day to practise the J-stroke or improve your steering technique.
  • Rent a canoe – If you do not own one, many lakes and parks offer rentals, making it easy to get afloat for the first time.
  • Read about canoe history – Explore the canoe’s deep links to Indigenous peoples and the North American fur trade.
  • Pack a paddling picnic – Combine the trip with a riverside lunch and make a full day of it.

What is National Canoe Day?

National Canoe Day is an annual celebration of the canoe and its lasting cultural and historical significance, particularly across Canada and the wider North American continent. It recognises the canoe’s importance to Indigenous peoples, who developed and refined the craft over thousands of years, and to the voyageurs who relied on canoes during the fur trade. Today it is enjoyed by paddlers of all ages and abilities, from seasoned canoeists to complete beginners.

When is National Canoe Day?

National Canoe Day takes place on 26 June every year. In 2026 it falls on Friday, 26 June. The date is fixed and was chosen to echo 26 June in the 17th century, when a group of voyageurs is said to have left Montreal to travel into the interior of North America for the fur trade. Although it began as a Canadian celebration, it is also marked by paddling enthusiasts in the United States and beyond.

The History of National Canoe Day

The canoe is one of the oldest forms of transport known to humanity. The oldest surviving example, the Pesse canoe found in the Netherlands, is thought to have been made between 8200 and 7600 BCE. In North America, Indigenous peoples crafted canoes from birch bark, dugout logs and animal skins for travel, trade, hunting and warfare long before European arrival. These craft were later adopted by fur traders and explorers, becoming central to the opening up of the continent’s vast network of rivers and lakes.

National Canoe Day itself is a much more recent invention. In 2007 the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation ran a popular campaign to identify the Seven Wonders of Canada, and the canoe was chosen among them by public vote. To mark the honour, The Canadian Canoe Museum designated 26 June as National Canoe Day, creating an annual occasion to celebrate the canoe’s heritage and encourage people to get out on the water.

Since then the day has grown into a fixture in the paddling calendar, with the museum hosting tours and activities and paddlers around the country, and increasingly beyond it, taking to the water to mark the occasion.
