Where does the month come from?

American Humane’s account identifies December as National Cat Lovers Month. It documents use of the occasion, but does not establish a founder or a single national programme. This guide does not repeat unsupported claims about seasonal adoption spikes, campaign impact or cats providing a guaranteed health benefit.

The most useful activity may be small and specific: a better place to rest, a play session your cat enjoys or help that a rescue organisation has actually requested.

Try a simple enrichment check

Cats Protection’s play guidance explains how play can support a cat’s wellbeing. It recommends suitable toys, short games and checking toys for wear. Use the individual cat’s response to guide the activity rather than expecting every cat to enjoy the same game.

1. Observe first. Notice where your cat likes to rest, watch the room or play. Leave an undisturbed option available.
2. Offer one choice. Try a suitable toy or a place to explore, keeping the change manageable.
3. Let the cat decide. An invitation to play should not become a chase or a forced interaction. Stop when the cat loses interest or moves away.
4. Check the equipment. Follow the toy’s instructions and put away items that could tangle, break or be swallowed. Replace damaged toys.

Supporting cats without adopting

Check a local rescue’s current wish list or volunteer information before collecting supplies. Storage space, staffing and animal needs vary. A requested item or an agreed task is more helpful than an unexpected delivery of goods the organisation cannot use.

Adoption and fostering need time to consider the household, ongoing costs and the animal’s needs. December’s calendar occasion is not a reason to make that decision quickly or give someone an animal as a surprise.

Keep sharing comfortable

A cat does not need a costume, a busy gathering or repeated handling to appear in a celebration. If taking a photograph, keep the setting familiar and allow the cat to leave. For changes in health or behaviour that concern you, speak to a vet rather than treating an awareness activity as a solution.
