What is National Children's Day UK?
National Children's Day UK 2027 is on Sunday 9 May 2027.
National Children's Day UK (often shortened to NCDUK) falls on the second Sunday in May each year. In 2027 that is Sunday 9 May, the date confirmed by the organiser, National Children's Day UK, an initiative of the Flourish Project C.I.C. It is the UK's own children's day: a celebration of childhood and a reminder that children's rights, freedoms and wellbeing all need protecting. It is not a bank holiday, and it is a different day from the UN's World Children's Day on 20 November.
If you searched for "Children's Day UK" or "Kids' Day UK", this is the day you are looking for. The 2026 event was held on Sunday 10 May 2026 under the banner "Time to Act"; the 2027 theme has not yet been announced.
National Children's Day UK is an annual day dedicated to the importance of a healthy childhood. The organiser describes it as being about "how we need to protect the rights, freedoms and flourishing of children and young people", and it works on two levels: a celebration of children and everything that is good about being young, and a prompt for adults to think about the kind of world we are creating for the next generation.
The day is run by the Flourish Project, a non-profit community interest company based in Cheltenham that works on the connection between individual wellbeing and collective thriving. Rather than running a single national programme, it asks as many people as possible to create their own events and activities. Its stated aims are to highlight the importance of childhood health and happiness, to celebrate the work being done across the UK to support children's welfare, and to advance children's participation in the decisions that affect them.
When is National Children's Day UK and how is the date set?
National Children's Day UK is held on the second Sunday in May. Recent and upcoming dates are Sunday 10 May 2026, Sunday 9 May 2027, and, if the same pattern holds, Sunday 14 May 2028 and Sunday 13 May 2029. The organiser publishes each year's date on its website, so check there before planning an event more than a year ahead.
The choice of a May Sunday is deliberate. Most countries mark their children's day on 20 November, the UN date, or on 1 June. The UK organisers chose the beginning of summer instead so that children can get outside on the day, into their neighbourhoods and into nature. A Sunday also makes families the natural starting point, with schools picking the theme up during the week before or after.

History of National Children's Day UK
The idea of a children's day goes back to 1954, when the UN General Assembly recommended that every country institute a Universal Children's Day as "a day of worldwide fraternity and understanding between children". The UN's own observance settled on 20 November, the date on which the Declaration of the Rights of the Child was adopted in 1959 and the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989. The UK ratified the Convention in 1991.
For a long time the UK had no national children's day of its own. National Children's Day UK was launched in the mid-2010s by the Save Childhood Movement, a campaign group led by Wendy Ellyatt that argued children's wellbeing was being squeezed by early formal schooling, screen time and loss of outdoor play. The day has been held on the second Sunday in May every year since, and the Save Childhood Movement's work has since been carried on by the Flourish Project C.I.C., which now runs the day and receives any funds raised through it.
Each year the organisers choose a shared concern. In 2026 it was the decreasing wellbeing of UK children and teachers, summed up as "Time to Act", and the round-up of that year's activity shows libraries, theatres, adoption agencies, Home-Start branches, YMCA England & Wales and local safeguarding partnerships all taking part.
What happens in the UK on the day
Because there is no central event, National Children's Day UK looks different in every town. Typical activity includes:
- Family days out: parks, country parks, nature reserves and museums run free or low-cost sessions aimed at getting children outdoors.
- Libraries and theatres: story times, craft sessions and family performances, often with a children's rights or wellbeing thread.
- Schools and nurseries: assemblies, outdoor learning days, and lessons on children's rights in the week around the Sunday.
- Charities and councils: local safeguarding partnerships, family support charities and early-years teams use the day to promote their services and to listen to children's views.
- Online: the organiser collects photos and posts under #NCDUK and the year's hashtag (for 2026, #NCDUK2026) and publishes a "what went on" gallery afterwards.
How to take part
At home
The simplest way to mark the day is to spend it with your children, ideally outside. A picnic, a walk, den building, a trip to the beach or a muddy afternoon in the garden all fit the organiser's aim of getting children into nature. Ask children what they would like to do and let them lead; the day is partly about children's right to be heard. If you want to go a little further, look up what your local library, park or museum has on, and share a photo with the #NCDUK hashtag.
In schools and nurseries
Schools usually mark the day on the Friday before or the Monday after. Ideas that work well include an outdoor learning morning, a whole-school assembly on children's rights (the Convention's rights to play, to education and to have their views heard map neatly onto a primary assembly), a pupil-led council meeting about something the school could change, or a "childhood then and now" project in which children interview grandparents about how they played. Early-years settings often simply give the day over to free play outdoors.
For charities, councils and workplaces
Organisations working with children can let the organiser know what they are doing so it appears in the national round-up, use the day to launch a consultation with children and young people, or run a wellbeing session for staff who work with children; the 2026 focus explicitly included teachers' wellbeing alongside pupils'. Employers can mark the day with family-friendly flexibility on the Friday or Monday, or by supporting a children's charity. Donations made through the organiser's site go to the Flourish Project's voluntary work on children's wellbeing.
National Children's Day UK and World Children's Day: the difference
The two are easily confused, so it helps to be clear. World Children's Day, also known as Universal Children's Day, is the UN observance on 20 November, led by UNICEF and marking the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. National Children's Day UK is a separate, UK-only initiative on the second Sunday in May, run by a small non-profit rather than the UN, and focused on getting children outdoors and on their everyday wellbeing. Many schools mark both. There is also International Children's Day on 1 June, observed mainly in Europe and Asia, and the United States has no single national children's day.
