Today is National Day of Listening. And while listening is something we promote any time of year, today has a specific intention.

Celebrated on the Friday after Thanksgiving, National Listening Day was launched in 2008 by StoryCorps, a Not For Profit Organization whose mission is to provide all Americans with an opportunity to tell, record and preserve the stories of their lives.

A wonderful and thoughtful alternative to the chaos that is Black Friday, National Listening Day was organized to take place on this day as at is often a time that families are together, with time away from work and other distractions to focus on one another.

StoryCorps encourages participants to interview a loved on, friend or member of their community and share the interview on the dedicated website. The StoryCorps Archive comprises one of the largest born-digital collections of human voices, featuring more than 200,000 conversations recorded in all 50 states and Puerto Rico, and around the world. The full collection of interviews is housed at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

If you want to get involved the webiste hosts a load of information advising participants of the best way to interview people, techniques to record the best quality recordings and how to upload and share. With many fascinating people participating including presidents and other famous personalities its quite possible you may become absorbed for hours watching and listening the interviews!

This is a truly wonderful way of learning more about others and spending some quality time with people. Everyone has a story to tell!
