What is National Diabetes Month?
It is a US awareness period for learning about diabetes and improving access to reliable information and support. Use NIDDK’s National Diabetes Month page as a starting point for campaign materials. Check the edition and date of a resource before calling a slogan the official 2026 theme.
This US month is distinct from World Diabetes Day on 14 November. A national month and an international day can have different organisers and campaign materials.
National Diabetes Month in the United States runs throughout November, including 1–30 November 2026. The US National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) provides information and outreach resources for people and organisations marking the month.
Why the type of diabetes matters
NIDDK’s diabetes overview explains the differences between the main types. In type 1 diabetes, the immune system attacks the cells that make insulin. In type 2 diabetes, the body does not use insulin well and may not make enough.
A general message that everyone can prevent diabetes by changing their lifestyle is therefore misleading. Choose resources that identify which type or situation they address, and avoid assumptions about a person’s behaviour or circumstances.
A useful activity for an organisation
Rather than inventing a screening programme or giving treatment advice, check whether people can find appropriate information and raise a support request privately. The following is our suggested review.
- Choose a setting. Identify a workplace, school, college or community service and the people who use it.
- Find the support route. Check who handles an individual enquiry and whether the instructions are easy to find.
- Review the information shared. Replace undated statistics, broad prevention claims and unsupported treatment tips with links to suitable health organisations.
- Agree a specific improvement. For example, clarify a contact route or provide an accessible version of existing information.
- Arrange follow-up. Assign responsibility and a date to check whether the change was made.
Sharing experiences respectfully
If someone wants to speak about living with diabetes, agree the subject and use of photographs or recordings in advance. Give people ways to join an activity without discussing their own health.
Do not ask participants to publish readings, diagnoses or treatment details as part of an awareness challenge. Individual questions about care should go to an appropriate health professional rather than a public group discussion.
