What is augmentative and alternative communication?
ASHA’s public information about augmentative and alternative communication explains that AAC can support or replace speech. It can include writing, pictures, gestures and speech-generating technology. People may use different combinations, either regularly or in particular situations.
Individual assessment and equipment decisions require an appropriately qualified speech and language professional. A campaign or a social-media post cannot determine which communication method is right for a person.
National NonSpeaking/Nonverbal Awareness Day is listed for 30 September 2026. The date has previously been marked in Northern Ireland, including in the Assembly’s official proceedings on 30 September 2025. An organiser’s 2026 programme has not been independently confirmed for this update.
Communication and inclusion
The observance is an opportunity to consider how people who do not use speech, or do not always use speech, can participate in everyday decisions and conversations. The Northern Ireland Assembly’s 2025 record recognises the day and discusses the right to communicate. It is evidence of that dated recognition, not a worldwide declaration or a confirmed future programme.
Ways to improve access
- Ask how the person wants to communicate. Address them directly and allow time for a response.
- Offer alternatives to speaking aloud. At meetings or events, consider written questions and other accessible ways to contribute.
- Respect choice and privacy. Obtain consent before sharing someone’s story, photograph or communication output.
- Include people in planning. An awareness activity should involve the people whose access needs it concerns.
Checking an event before promoting it
Before announcing a local activity, confirm its date, host and accessibility arrangements directly. The campaign website previously associated with this listing could not be verified during this update, so this page does not invent an organiser, official theme, origin story or 2027 date.
