National Walking Month 2018- Time to Lace up Your Walking Shoes
May is National Walking Month, a chance to ditch the car at least once a day and do those everyday trips by foot instead. Whether it’s the school run or a visit to the shops, National Walking month encourages us all to add an extra 20 minutes of walking a day to our routines. It is part of an ambitious plan to create a walking nation once again, improving overall health and reducing congestion on our streets
Living Streets aspires to a nation where everyone of all ages enjoys and benefits from the most simple and natural act of walking. It is estimated that we we are walking in the UK a third less than we were even just twenty years ago. National Walking Month highlights the benefits and pleasure of just an additional 20 minutes of walking a day and the improvement this can bring to the nation’s overall health.
There are many ways to get involved in National Walking Month. Parents and children can participate in Walk To School Week from 21-25 May, which in 2017 had over 400,000 participants. Wear the shoes that make you smile as part of Happy Shoesday on the 22nd May, a Living Streets fundraiser towards their work to make our streets safer.
Walking provides many benefits, both physical and mental. National Walking Month provides activities and tips to get people out and about walking again, feeling fitter and feeling more connected to the community they live in, whether urban or rural.
