About Safe Toys & Gifts Month

Safe Toys and Gifts Awareness Month is marked in the United States throughout December, running from 1 to 31 December in 2026. Promoted by Prevent Blindness, it encourages gift-givers to consider a child’s age, abilities and safety when choosing presents.

Who is behind the observance?

Prevent Blindness’ own campaign announcement identifies December as its Safe Toys and Gifts Awareness Month. The charity’s safe toy checklist provides a continuing resource. This establishes a US campaign context without inventing an anonymous founding story or a new 2026 theme.

The advice remains useful outside the month. A toy’s popularity, price or description as educational does not replace checking whether it is suitable for the child and setting where it will be used.

Check the exact product

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission’s toy-safety hub brings together guidance, recalls and warnings. It advises following age guidance, keeping small parts away from children under three and including appropriate protective equipment with riding toys.

Use the CPSC recall database to check the particular brand and model, including second-hand gifts. A general product review or a good star rating does not show whether a specific item has been recalled. If there is a recall, follow the official instructions for that product.

A five-minute gift check

  1. Read the label. Check the intended age and warnings rather than selecting only by a child’s interest or apparent skill.
  2. Think about the whole household. Consider younger children who may reach an older child’s small pieces.
  3. Check the instructions. Look at assembly, supervision and any protective equipment needed before the gift can be used.
  4. Look for specific hazards. Use the CPSC hub’s guidance on button batteries, magnets and water beads where relevant to the product.
  5. Keep the details. Save the product name, model and instructions so the recipient can check later warnings or contact the manufacturer.

Make a useful group activity

At a library or parent group, compare the labels on a few sample packages and practise finding the exact product in a recall search. Discuss what information is missing and where to obtain it, rather than recommending toys from appearance alone.

Keep packaging and small components away from children during the activity. Give recipients the instructions and relevant safety information with the gift. Readers outside the US should also consult their own country’s product-safety and recall service, since rules and recall notices differ between markets.
