About World Radiography Day
World Radiography Day falls on Sunday 8 November 2026. The Society of Radiographers confirms the annual 8 November date, marking Wilhelm Roentgen’s discovery of X-rays in 1895.
The day recognises radiography professionals and support workers, while giving the public opportunities to learn about diagnostic imaging, radiotherapy and careers in the profession.
Ideas for a department or professional team
Choose one question patients or visitors often ask, then prepare a clear answer for a display, short talk or approved video. For example, you might explain who someone is likely to meet during a visit or introduce the different roles in your team.
Use material cleared for public education. Obtain the necessary permissions for filming, photography and any patient story, and follow your organisation’s rules about clinical spaces. A careers event or public display should not interrupt care.
The Society’s World Radiography Day page is a starting point for campaign information. Some downloadable assets are currently marked as forthcoming, so check what is actually available before planning a printed display around them. Use any new annual theme only once its organising body has published it.
What do radiographers do?
The College of Radiographers’ careers guide explains two main routes in the UK:
- Diagnostic radiography: using imaging technology to investigate the body and support the diagnosis and care of patients.
- Therapeutic radiography: planning and delivering radiotherapy for people with cancer, with care and support throughout their treatment.
The work combines technical knowledge with patient care. An awareness activity can help explain those different roles without assuming that every radiographer performs every kind of examination or treatment.
An activity for students
Compare the diagnostic and therapeutic routes using the College’s careers page. Ask students to prepare three questions: what the work involves, how professionals support patients and what education or training routes are available.
The College provides course information and a way to request careers outreach. Check the current arrangements and availability rather than promising that a speaker or placement will be provided automatically.
For patients and the public
A thank-you message can be welcome, but useful information matters too. If attending a public event, check who it is intended for, whether booking is required and whether the venue has the access arrangements you need.
For questions about your own appointment or treatment, contact the service caring for you. An awareness event is not a route to request an unnecessary scan or interpret an individual’s results.
World Radiography Day and radiology
The International Day of Radiology also takes place on 8 November. It is a related but separately named initiative. When sharing resources, identify the organisation and campaign they come from rather than treating all materials as one programme.
