About World Smile Day
World Smile Day is a global celebration dedicated to spreading happiness and encouraging acts of kindness. It was created by Harvey Ball, the commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts, who designed the original smiley face in 1963. Ball felt his creation had become too commercialised, and established World Smile Day in 1999 to restore the original spirit of the smile: genuine kindness and positivity. The Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation continues to run the day each year.
When is World Smile Day?
World Smile Day is observed on the first Friday of October each year. In 2026 it falls on Friday 2 October. In 2027 it falls on Friday 1 October.

History of World Smile Day
Harvey Ball created the smiley face in 1963 for an insurance company’s morale campaign. It became one of the most recognised symbols in the world. Ball, troubled by the commercialisation of his design, created World Smile Day in 1999 as a way to return the smiley face to its original purpose: encouraging people to smile and do a kind act. The Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation carries on his work, with proceeds going to children’s charities.
