National Hand Washing week occurs between December 2nd and December 8th 2018 and is a fantastic way to promote better hygiene and reduce respiratory illnesses- particularly with little ones.
Initiated by family physician and infection control specialist Dr Will Sawyer and his companion Henry the Hand, the campaign provides information about the importance of hand washing. Hand washing is something we all assume everyone does carefully, but in reality is probably something we could all be better at. With so many organisations including schools, work places as well as homes reporting illnesses every year, it does seem strange that we dont promote better hand washing tips and advice more. By adopting the techniques advised by Dr Sawyer and his trusty partner Henry the Hand, the chances of becoming ill with infections such as flu, the common cold, RSV, bronchitis and pneumonia are reduced significantly.
Their motto ‘Spread the Word Not the Germs‘ is accompanied with 4 key principles:
- Wash your hands when they are dirty and before eating.
- DO NOT cough into your hands
- DO NOT sneeze into your hands
- DO NOT put your fingers into your nose, eyes or mouth
These principles have been endorsed by the AMA & AAFP
What an excellent idea to promote in your business or school! Help each other to stay well and become advocates of this fantastic campaign!
