2026 Theme: Innovate Today. Nourish Tomorrow.
The 2026 theme, set by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), is “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow.” It focuses on the role of sustainable food system innovation – from drought-resistant crops and vertical farming to reduced-waste supply chains and alternative proteins – in addressing both hunger and the climate pressures that threaten food production. The FAO is calling on governments, businesses, and researchers to accelerate investment in proven innovations that can scale quickly enough to reach the 733 million people the UN estimates currently face food insecurity.
Why World Food Day Matters
Food insecurity is one of the defining challenges of this decade. According to the FAO’s State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2025 report, 733 million people worldwide faced hunger in 2024 – around 1 in 11 globally. Food systems are also responsible for approximately one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions, making the way we produce and consume food central to any realistic climate strategy.
In the UK, the Trussell Trust food bank network distributed more than 3 million three-day emergency food parcels in 2024-25 – a record high and a 94% increase over five years.
How Organisations Mark It
- The FAO holds its flagship event at its headquarters in Rome, typically addressed by heads of state and senior UN figures, and livestreamed globally.
- World Food Programme UK runs fundraising campaigns and educational events aimed at raising awareness of acute hunger in conflict zones.
- Trussell Trust and local food banks across the UK often coordinate donation drives and volunteer recruitment around World Food Day.
- WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) uses the occasion to highlight the scale of UK food waste – around 10 million tonnes per year – and the progress made under its Courtauld Commitment with food retailers.
How to Get Involved
- Donate to a food bank: Find your nearest Trussell Trust food bank at trusselltrust.org. Most-needed items typically include tinned fish, pasta, rice, and UHT milk.
- Reduce food waste: The UK’s Love Food Hate Waste campaign offers meal planning tools, storage tips, and portion guides to help households cut waste.
- Support innovative food businesses: Buying from producers who use regenerative agriculture, sustainable packaging, or community-supported agriculture (CSA) box schemes puts money directly into the food system models World Food Day promotes.
- Volunteer: Local food banks, community fridges, and FareShare redistribution hubs all welcome volunteers year-round – but the run-up to World Food Day is a good prompt to make first contact.
History
World Food Day was established by FAO member states in November 1979, at the organisation’s 20th General Conference, to commemorate the founding of the FAO on 16 October 1945. The first World Food Day was observed in 1981. Since then, it has grown to become one of the most widely observed days in the entire United Nations calendar, marked in over 150 countries. Each year a theme is chosen to focus attention on a specific aspect of food security; past themes have included food waste, biodiversity, sustainable food systems, and rural livelihoods.
