What Father’s Day is

Father’s Day is a day to thank dads and father figures: stepdads, grandfathers, foster carers, adoptive fathers, uncles and anyone else who has taken on that role. Most families keep it simple. A card, a small present, a phone call, a pub lunch or a cooked breakfast covers it for the majority of households.

It is also a difficult day for many people. Those who have lost their father, are estranged from him, or never knew him can find the run-up hard, particularly with shops and inboxes full of Father’s Day promotions from late May onwards.

Is Father’s Day the same in the UK and the US?

Yes. The UK and the US both mark Father’s Day on the third Sunday of June, so the date is identical in both countries every year. Because the rule is fixed, the dates are certain well in advance: Sunday 21 June 2026, Sunday 20 June 2027, Sunday 18 June 2028, Sunday 17 June 2029 and Sunday 16 June 2030. It always falls on a Sunday and it always lands somewhere between 15 and 21 June.

Father’s Day is not a bank holiday in any part of the UK. Shops, pubs and restaurants open as normal, and many of them are busier than on an ordinary Sunday. No charity, company or government department runs the day; it is a popular tradition rather than an organised campaign. The nearest thing to an official body is the Greeting Card Association, the UK trade body whose annual market report counts how many Father’s Day cards are sold.

Father’s Day in the UK today

It is now one of the bigger dates in the UK retail calendar, though well behind Mother’s Day and Christmas. The Greeting Card Association’s market report puts UK Father’s Day card sales in 2024 at more than 21 million cards, worth over £44 million, at an average price of £2.07 a card. Retail analyst GlobalData estimated total UK Father’s Day spending at £1,123 million in 2025, with around 45 per cent of consumers taking part. Its 2026 forecast expected participation to climb to just over 49 per cent, while noting that most shoppers planned to spend the same or less than the year before. Food and drink, clothing, watches and experiences such as a meal out or event tickets were the categories it expected to hold up best.

In practice the UK version of the day looks like this:

  • Cards and gifts bought in the fortnight before, with supermarkets and garden centres doing a large share of the trade.
  • Sunday lunch at home or in a pub; many pubs and restaurants take bookings weeks ahead and run set menus.
  • Days out: football ground tours, go-karting, fishing trips, cricket, golf, and the first barbecues of summer if the weather allows.
  • Sports on television. Father’s Day often coincides with a major tournament or the Test cricket season.
  • Schools making cards and small gifts in the week before, which is also near the end of the summer term.

How to mark Father’s Day

At home. The gift matters less than the time. Ask what he actually wants to do with the day, which is often not very much. Cooking his favourite meal, going for a walk or a round of golf together, or sorting the photos from a family trip all cost little and tend to be remembered longer than another pair of socks. If he lives far away, a phone call on the Sunday morning is the main thing.

In schools and nurseries. Card-making is the standard activity. Plan it so that children without a father at home can make a card for a grandad, uncle, stepdad or another important adult instead, and check with parents quietly where you know a family has had a bereavement. Some schools choose a “special person” framing rather than “dad” for this reason.

In workplaces. A light touch is best. A note in the internal newsletter, flexible hours on the Friday for parents picking children up from school events, or a nod to Men’s Health Week, which runs in the days leading up to Father’s Day, are all appropriate. Avoid anything that assumes every employee has a father to celebrate.

If the day is hard. It is fine to ignore it. Unsubscribe from the promotional emails, plan something unrelated for the Sunday, or use the day to remember a father who has died in whatever way feels right. Bereavement charities see more calls around Father’s Day and Mother’s Day than at other times, and talking to someone is a reasonable thing to do.

Father’s Day around the world

Because the UK follows the US date, visitors from America, Canada, Ireland, France, the Netherlands, India, Japan and many other countries find Father’s Day falls on the same Sunday as at home. It does not everywhere. Australia and New Zealand hold Father’s Day on the first Sunday of September. Spain, Italy and Portugal celebrate it on 19 March, the feast of St Joseph, which is a far older tradition than the American one. If you have family abroad it is worth checking which date applies to them before sending a card.

History of Father’s Day

The modern Father’s Day began in Spokane, Washington, on 19 June 1910. Sonora Smart Dodd, whose father William Jackson Smart had raised six children alone after her mother died in 1898, heard a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909 and asked local ministers to set aside a day for fathers too. She suggested 5 June, her father’s birthday, but the ministers wanted more time to prepare their sermons, so the first observance was held on the third Sunday of June instead, according to HistoryLink, the online encyclopedia of Washington State history.

The day spread across the US over the following decades but had no legal standing until 24 April 1972, when President Nixon signed Public Law 92-278 fixing the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day, as recorded by the US House of Representatives history office. Dodd lived to see it, dying in 1978 at the age of 96.

Britain adopted the American date rather than inventing its own. Father’s Day was being marked here by the middle of the twentieth century, largely through cards and shop promotions, and was firmly established by the 1970s. Unlike Mothering Sunday, which has a much older Christian history of its own, Father’s Day in the UK has never had a religious or legal basis; it has always been a retail and family occasion that follows the US calendar.
