About International Day of Peace 2027

International Day of Peace 2026 was on Monday 21 September 2026. The next International Day of Peace is on Tuesday 21 September 2027.

Year Date Day
2026 21 September Monday
2027 21 September Tuesday
2028 21 September Thursday

International Day of Peace falls on the same fixed date every year: 21 September, established by the UN General Assembly in 2001.

The 2026 theme is “Invest in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day”, chosen by the United Nations to honour the everyday architects of peace – ordinary people taking local action to build lasting harmony in their communities, schools, and workplaces. The campaign calls on everyone, not just diplomats, to take small daily steps for peace. Use #InvestInPeace on social media to join the global conversation.

What Happens on International Day of Peace?

Each year on 21 September, the United Nations calls for a 24-hour global cease-fire and non-violence. At its headquarters in New York, the UN Peace Bell is rung – cast from coins donated by children from 60 nations – to open the day’s observances. World leaders and diplomats address the General Assembly, and communities around the globe hold events ranging from peace walks and candlelit vigils to school debates and community art installations.

In the UK, Peace One Day – the NGO that championed the fixed date – co-ordinates events with schools, businesses, and charities. UK schools commonly hold assemblies focused on conflict resolution, empathy, and global citizenship. Churches and community centres often open their doors for moments of reflection and interfaith dialogue.

How to Mark It: Ideas for Schools, Workplaces, and Families

  • Schools: Hold a peace assembly, run a “resolve a conflict” workshop, or ask pupils to write letters to a pen pal in a country affected by conflict.
  • Workplaces: Organise a lunch-hour discussion on what peace means in everyday professional life, or make a team donation to a conflict-zone charity.
  • Families: Watch a documentary about peacebuilding together, observe a minute’s silence at noon, or commit as a family to one act of kindness a day for the week.
  • Communities: Join or organise a peace walk, light a candle in a public space, or host an interfaith gathering.
  • Online: Share a personal pledge using #InvestInPeace and #PeaceDay to amplify the message.

What is International Day of Peace?

International Day of Peace – often called Peace Day – is a United Nations observance devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples. It recognises that peace is not merely the absence of conflict but the presence of equality, respect, justice, and cooperation. The UN urges individuals, communities, and governments to recognise peace as a fundamental human right and to take active steps to protect it.

A Brief History

The UN General Assembly established an International Day of Peace in 1981, originally held on the opening day of its annual session – a different Tuesday in September each year. In 1999, British filmmaker Jeremy Gilley founded Peace One Day and campaigned for a fixed annual date. Following sustained advocacy, the Assembly officially fixed the observance to 21 September in 2001, enabling coordinated global participation for the first time.

Each year since has brought a distinct theme: “End Racism. Build Peace.” (2022), “Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the #GlobalGoals” (2023), “Cultivating a Culture of Peace” (2024), “Leaving No One Behind for Peace and Development” (2025), and “Invest in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day” (2026).
